I‘m just starting my first Book Fair as a newbie librarian! I was pleasantly surprised the diverse books were mixed in instead of being in a separate case as they initially planned. I‘ve gotten prize donations and books donated so everyone gets something—even if they can‘t pay! Now I just have to make it through the rest of my previews and Parent Night! Wish me luck!

I‘ve never read any of Jaqueline Woodson‘s books, and now I‘m at a loss for why I haven‘t until now! I listened to this one over audiobook on SCRIBD and would listen to it as I was driving to/ from work, and when cleaning the house- when I couldn‘t listen to it, my mind was still on Lonnie‘s story.
After I finish “Promise, Lonnie” I am going to explore Woodson‘s other books to listen to on audiobook.

This novel-in-verse was such a great read! Locomotion and Lili are siblings living apart after a tragic accident. Through poetry, Locomotion finds his voice and uses his words to heal.

Another Woodson that I absolutely loved. 💛

When Lonnie was seven years old, his parents died in a fire. Now he's eleven, and he still misses them terribly. And he misses his little sister, Lili, who was put into a different foster home because "not a lot of people want boys-not foster boys that ain't babies. Beautiful novel in verse.

Not great. Felt very rushed through, and not an amazing story to begin with. It was very hard to understand what was going on due to terrible line breaks and overall writing style. Not a great book, I do not plan on reading more by this author

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ In this book in verse, eleven year old Lonnie has suffered great loss. He's lived in a group home, deals with complicated friendships and has been separated from his little sister. With the help of his teacher he learns to express his grief and anger through poetry.

Jacqueline Woodson never disappoints.

More heartbreaking verse from Woodson.

Jacqueline Woodson is easily becoming a favorite author. This is a book of poetry written from the point of view of a 11 year old black boy. He writes about all of the struggles and issues he is dealing with. Wonderfully written and worth the short time (100 pages) it will take to read.

Bookmail. Since I finished my book last night and didn‘t start another yet ... woohoo

My 8th grader was required to have a free reading poetry book for the first grading period, and he picked this out at the library. With a little encouragement from mom, because how can you go wrong with Woodson? Son thought the book was "fine"--which is all I can hope for with a poetry book. Now that I've read it myself, it's s great choice! Lonnie and his sister were orphaned by a fire and now live in different foster homes. Lonnie enjoys poetry!

Planning to start both of these today! Locomotion was my 8th grader's poetry pick for school, he's done now. The other is an ARC!

One of those beautifully written books that inspires kids to create and write and express. The 7th and 8th grade classes are going to read this soon. I think it will really be impactful.

You can never have enough novels-in-verse in a classroom. This would pair well with LOVE THAT DOG by Sharon Creech. 11yo Lonnie writes about his parents, his sister, and Miss Edna in his class poetry notebook.
