Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter
Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter: A Novel | Mario Vargas Llosa
17 posts | 25 read | 12 to read
Mario Vargas Llosa's brilliant, multilayered novel is set in the Lima, Peru, of the author's youth, where a young student named Marito is toiling away in the news department of a local radio station. His young life is disrupted by two arrivals. The first is his aunt Julia, recently divorced and thirteen years older, with whom he begins a secret affair. The second is a manic radio scriptwriter named Pedro Camacho, whose racy, vituperative soap operas are holding the city's listeners in thrall. Pedro chooses young Marito to be his confidant as he slowly goes insane. Interweaving the story of Marito's life with the ever-more-fevered tales of Pedro Camacho, Vargas Llosa's novel is hilarious, mischievous, and masterful, a classic named one of the best books of the year by the New York Times Book Review.

#wondrouswednesday @Eggs

1. A friend just gave me Winter in Sokcho as a late Christmas present

2. I believe I recently gave Ariadne to @moll

3. Tagged book I just finished yesterday - nostalgic, sweet, poignant, funny, revealing of the hypocrisy of Peruvian society… everything you‘re after from a love story!

Eggs Great titles 👏🏻📚💝 2y

I completely understand why Llosa won the Nobel prize! This was just amazing. The prose, the characters, the story and the translation were just *chef‘s kiss*

This mixes the sweet, naive, nostalgic love story of a male student and a woman who is called his aunt but is NOT his blood aunt (he has to explain that a lot), mixed in with the dramatic radio stories that surround them in Peru. It reminded me of Jane the virgin in some ways!

mjtwo Keanu Reeves was in the movie version of this - I remember really liking it. Would be interesting to read the book. 2y

#HeatOfJuly Day 26: A lot of #BabyGotBack moments in this brilliantly conceived novel set in Peru. Marito, a struggling writer in his teens was studying to be a lawyer & working as a news department staff of a local radio station. He fell in love with an older woman, a 30-something divorceé, who found Marito‘s teenybopper infatuation amusing until she herself became enamoured by the untoward & forbidden romance of it all. https://wp.me/pDlzr-dt9

It was so easy to fall in love the characters especially Aunt Julia and Pedro Camacho. Aunt Julia was adorable, optimistic and very lovable. I wouldn't be surprised that Marito fell in love with her. I cannot say the same for Pedro Camacho. He is very talented and very hard-working but a bit crazy even before he really got crazy. He's just like one of the characters in his serials. I would love to read more Llosa. He's a really great storyteller.

Absolutely loved the mix between the radio series and the story about Mario. Really enjoyed this book and found it clever how he managed to follow the style of Pedro Camacho as his mind faltered. Amazing!

Holy bifocals Batman!! Smallest. Print. Ever. You can't really tell in the photo, but trust me, it's the smallest print I have ever seen in a mass market paperback.

LeahBergen And this is why I no longer read mass markets! 7y
AlaMich @LeahBergen I know, you're right, but for some irrational reason I love MMs 🤷🏻‍♀️ 7y

Mixed feelings about this one. Aside from the rampant racism and misogyny (it's set in the 50s so attitudes of the times prevail I guess) it was kind of a fun read. Like a South American "How I Met Your Mother", but the ending left me a little flat -not horribly bad - just dull. Bob was not impressed.

Loved this and appreciated Sudden Death. Another favourite which is back in Adelaide is The Informers by Juan Gabriel Vasquez, & I'm keen to read Reputations by him.

So yes there is such a thing as a barquillo-flavoured chocolate. Loot from Madrid. Paired with espresso - then you got your recipe for a perfect Saturday afternoon.

That moment when your bookmarks remind you of the castles you've been to and you get distracted from your reading. Fail.

readinginthedark 😍Great bookmark! I have one from Heidelberg but lost it in my move. 😞 8y
GatheringBooks @readinginthedark oh we didn't get to visit heidelberg - too bad. perhaps when we go back next year (crossing my fingers that it happens). 8y
readinginthedark @GatheringBooks We wouldn't have either, but we took a short river cruise and that's where it started, so we looked around a bit first. If you do go, there's a beautiful little tea shop not far from the square. I recommend the Heidelberger black tea. 😊 8y
GatheringBooks very nice! i didn't even get to see lake starnberg - was that part of your river cruise? the an der wurm river is gorgeous too. i was mostly in munich but traveled a fair bit outside of germany mostly during my ten-week stay. 8y
