Falling Behind
Falling Behind: How Rising Inequality Harms the Middle Class | Robert Frank
10 posts | 1 to read
With a timely new foreword by Robert Frank, this groundbreaking book explores the very meaning of happiness and prosperity in America today. Although middle-income families don't earn much more than they did several decades ago, they are buying bigger cars, houses, and appliances. To pay for them, they spend more than they earn and carry record levels of debt. Robert Frank explains how increased concentrations of income and wealth at the top of the economic pyramid have set off "expenditure cascades" that raise the cost of achieving many basic goals for the middle class. Writing in lively prose for a general audience, Frank employs up-to-date economic data and examples drawn from everyday life to shed light on reigning models of consumer behavior. He also suggests reforms that could mitigate the costs of inequality. Falling Behind compels us to rethink how and why we live our economic lives the way we do.

Well this is disappointing. It's been a long time... years in fact, since I've fallen behind in my Goodreads challenge. I'm usually ahead of schedule. I don't know what's going on with me. 😫

Sure, it's only one book, but I'm definitely not at my usual pace.

P.S. feel free to add me on Goodreads. https://www.goodreads.com/user/show/46824567-malina-skrobosinski

I'm just going to pretend that I'm not a month and a half behind on #Bookspin and #Doublespin and announce that I'm participating once again in the new round. I've added two scary stories for October. We'll see if I'll have to read those. Otherwise they're just for another time.
Out: De teruggekeerden - Jason Mott
Paper towns - John Green
In: Hex - Thomas Olde Heuvelt
Sleepy Hollow - Washington Irving

Ugh, why do I do this to myself every year. I hate the Goodreads challenge but I can‘t not do it.

PickingBooks I hear you! I‘m off by three books. 5y

#2018Challenges: Trying to get back on track with #LitsyAtoZ2018 & hoping to meet/exceed my Goodreads goal of 84 books, but I don't think I'm going to complete #LitsybytheNumbers or #ReadHarder. I thought I'd be able to use books for multiple challenges, but there hasn't been as much overlap as I hoped. I'm certainly being challenged! I'm a mood reader & never able to stick to a plan so I guess I should be happy I've accomplished this much 🤷‍♀️

sprainedbrain I scrapped my ReadHarder plans a few weeks ago... trying to finish a couple of others, though! 5y
Chelleo If it makes you feel any better, I‘m behind on #litsybythenumbers too 😭😭😭😂 Taking inventory as we speak! #badhost #gotofftoagreatstart #crashingandburningnow 😂 5y

😖 Anyone else behind on their reading goals for the year? I‘ve been struggling for a while to get on track for my usual goal - I‘ve had no problem with this number the past 3 years or so. I know I shouldn‘t care, but I can‘t help it!

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Time for some short fun reads, or a book of poetry, or a great comic to get your number moving again. I suggest... (edited) 6y

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Most of these authors have other books if any of them appeal to you. But in a tough year, that‘s what‘s kept my reading from stagnating and kept my GR number moving....lots of great quick reads interspersed with the more weighty serious reads. I hope it helps, and no matter what try to remember as long as you are enjoying what you are reading, that really is the most important thing. (edited) 6y
cariashley @Riveted_Reader_Melissa these are AMAZING recommendations, thank you so much! You‘ve made me feel so much better ☺️🙏 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @cariashley You are so welcome, I hope you enjoy some of them. 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa By the way, I saw you read the first Binti, the rest of the trilogy is out now if you are interested in book #2 & 3 and they are all shorter books too. 6y
cariashley @Riveted_Reader_Melissa good call! I actually read the second one but haven‘t gotten to the third. I‘ve done all the Sagas but not the other graphic novels you suggested. Plus this is a good reminder to get Rupi Kaur‘s second book, I read her first but not that one. I‘ll be back on track in no time! 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Oh yes, the second one is good too 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa And if you like Rupi‘s, I highly recommend Amanda Lovelace‘s poetry...it‘s in a similar vein and there are currently 2 of hers out now. (edited) 6y
cariashley @Riveted_Reader_Melissa omg we‘re totally on the same page, I JUST borrowed Lovelace‘s first from the library bc I thought of it too! 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @cariashley Yes, you‘ll definitely be caught up in no time now! And yea! Glad I was on the same vibe today! 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I just looked at some of your read books on Litsy, it looks like we definitely follow some of the same authors and types of books! 6y
sprainedbrain I‘m 6 books behind, too. I spent an embarrassingly nerdy about of time calculating and figuring this morning to make sure I can still finish all of my various challenges for the year. I think I can do it. 🤓😂 (edited) 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @sprainedbrain I‘m glad I‘m not the only one who does that!😉 6y
cariashley @Riveted_Reader_Melissa we totally do! 🤗🙌 6y
cariashley @sprainedbrain Haha I do too. Lots of overcomplicated calculations 😆 6y

Does anyone else get stressed when they fall behind on their Goodreads challenge?? I mean, I've been reading a lot of thick books lately and I don't want it to be a race but I also want to challenge myself to read at least one more book than I read last year. I also want to enjoy reading and not have it be about the numbers but then I see the numbers... It's only March and I'm behind!! 😥

TommieMarie74 I get stressed too. I‘m trying really hard to not think about my challenge but it‘s hard. 6y
Foxyfictionista @TommieMarie74 Are you behind at the moment? If so, how much? I just saw that I'm one book behind and now I'm going to drop everything and go read a book. 😅 6y
CatLass007 Read a couple of graphic novels, that will help you out. 6y
See All 18 Comments
Foxyfictionista @CatLass007 Yes, I had thought about that. I might have to! 😄 6y
TommieMarie74 I am behind right now. I was ahead at the end of January but fell behind in February. I‘m going to read some graphic novels to try to catch up. That‘s what I did last year and it helped. 6y
Foxyfictionista @TommieMarie74 Same for me. January started off great, February was ok, but now here I am. ☺️ 6y
Prairiegirl_reading I was tons of books behind a couple of years ago because I had frozen shoulder and couldn‘t hold a book open. I started feeling better and I caught up and surpassed my goal after that. It‘ll even out, just don‘t sweat it. 6y
MicheleinPhilly This is why I set my goal on the lower side. Seeing that “You are X books behind” stresses me out. 6y
Foxyfictionista @Prairiegirl_reading That's a very good point! I'm glad you're feeling better. 6y
Foxyfictionista @MicheleinPhilly I'll have to see how it goes. If I get too far behind I might have to change it. It is pretty stressful seeing that message though. 6y
MicheleinPhilly I have one GR friend that sets her goal at 1. She meets it on the 1st or 2nd of Jan. and then the pressure is off. I set mine at 50 but I‘ll usually read 100. 6y
Foxyfictionista @MicheleinPhilly Well I guess putting 1 book is one way to hit the goal! 😂😂😂 6y
Sarah83 Yes. I have to work so much this year, I can deal with all the books I want to read. 😥 6y
Foxyfictionista @Sarah83 it's frustrating when work gets in the way of reading!! 6y
Sarah83 Yes indeed and it even hurts, if you don't want to read after work 6y
Foxyfictionista @Sarah83 Yeah, I know what you mean. Sometimes I'm just too tired after work. 6y
Sarah83 I only manage to read 20 pages an evening. 😪 6y
Cortg I have a lot of chunky books I want to read this year, so I lowered my book goal by almost 20 less than I read last year. I‘m barely on target but it‘s all good! 6y
