WTF is Tarot?
WTF is Tarot?: ...& How Do I Do It? | Bakara Wintner
17 posts | 6 read | 7 to read
Young Blood, Old Magic: A No-Nonsense Approach to the Ancient Art of Reading Tarot You do not need to learn the tarot because you already know it. It is from this radical jumping off point that WTF Is Tarot breaks down the ancient art of cartomancy. This fresh, accessible and sometimes cheeky guide sheds a holistic light on how to read tarot, from the foundation of magic itself to understanding those tricky court cards to offering readings to others. In WTF Is Tarot, author and tarot reader Bakara Wintner unpacks the magic of the Major and Minor Aracana with shamanic wisdom and girl boss wit, illuminating their meaning with thoughtful anecdotes and analogies that reveal how deeply rooted these symbols already are in our everyday lives: we can feel the Moon in a howling barefoot run through Prospect Park, accept the grace of Temperance in falling in love or a divine intervention, ghost the haters with the Six of Swords, or identify when its time to let go of an ex with the Hanged Man. WTF is Tarot offers far more than a refreshingly candid tutorial on card reading. Bakara goes on to investigate the magic of crystal healing, chakras, meditation and other magical practices. This young witch offers not just a guide, but an invitation for even the most mundane Muggles to welcome magic into their lives, and for experienced wizards to rediscover it once again.

I finished the Major Arcana section last night. The author is really open and honest about her life. It‘s very raw. And she makes it relatable to the tarot and to the reader. She makes the cards come alive.

ElizaMarie Ooo I am glad you are enjoying this one! I really liked it (again thank you for recommending it) But yeah now I need to figure out how to do spreads. Like I should be asking questions? 3y
jb72 @ElizaMarie You can ask questions or ask for guidance. You can just meditate and pull a card. Really you can do what ever you want. Also, I‘ll sometimes look up specific spreads on the internet and use them as a guide of sorts: like a birthday spread or past, present, future spread. 3y

I‘m about halfway through the major arcana in the book. The author really has a way of making the explanations simple and clear. She shows the connection of the cards as well as the masculine and feminine connections. The author gives good examples too based on her own experiences.

ElizaMarie I agree I feel like she does such a great job making these cards “come to life“ So I have pulled 2x but I had asked it specific questions or themes.. Not sure if I have to keep looking for themes. or just pull as a way of kinda guiding my day?

Now I need a book to tell me when/how to do spreads.
3y
jb72 @ElizaMarie You can do spreads any time. Some pull cards every day or every week. Many pull for the new year or birthday. Just whatever feels right to you. Also you do not need a theme. You can just pull for guidance through your day. 3y
ElizaMarie @jb72 I think thats what it is. I thought I had to have a question or theme I am seeking out. But yeah maybe pulling a card a day to try to see if that will help guide me for the day would be good.. you are right! 3y

So . Glad to have read this book. Very no-nonsense way of figuring this out. I am going to try to incorporate readings often for me to learn and try to figure it all out. In my head and all that good stuff. I think in time with practice I will get better :)

@TheAromaOfBooks

TheAromaofBooks On Instagram, Maggie Stiefvater recently did a tarot card each day, going through the whole deck & explaining what they mean & did a really good job contextualizing them, I thought. It's not for me, but it's interesting to see. 3y
ElizaMarie @TheAromaofBooks ooo thanks for that ! 3y

So I am using the “reading“ as the bingo leaf for this one because it was about “reading“ and practicing Tarot. :)

I can't wait to decorate my new home with things I love :)

@Jb72

jb72 That is sort of the route I‘m going for next year. Cleaning out the things I don‘t love. Deciding if I need to replace or don‘t need at all. 3y

So in reading the Minors I am noticing a lot of parallels with the cards we used to play with as kids and the Tarot. My grandmother had a tarot deck she played with but it was different. I wish we can find it (she had dementia prior to her death and hid all sorts of things everywhere. When my aunt finds her things she send them my way usually). Anyway the Mexican playing cards share a lot of parallels with the tarot. ⬇

ElizaMarie And I remember when we would play cards she would mutter little sayings about the card or the suit in Spanish and it was always really sweet. Awe I am so happy with this journeyI am taking into Tarot.

Chrissyreadit I love tarot. Is that your current deck pictured? 3y
sprainedbrain What a beautiful memory❤️ 3y
ElizaMarie @Chrissyreadit no.. This is a picture (stolen online) but this is a picture of Mexican Playing cards. These cards were cards I would use growing up. To play like Con Quien, Pairs, King's Corner stuff like that. but I had noticed such a relationship with the suits as the tarot cards. I will post a pic of my cards soon :) 3y

@ElizaMarie I‘ve made it to page 22. The major arcana starts next. I‘m a little behind but I am hoping to set aside an hour to read that chapter tomorrow. The first few chapters were really good.

“Magic is leaning into the gorgeous mystery of it all.”

ElizaMarie I am loving it! I am to start the minors but work has been hell so I might read tomorrow 3y
Crazeedi Interesting 3y
jb72 @ElizaMarie I like her story of her first tarot deck too. The therapist just knew she needed it. The author just embraced her call to the deck. 3y

ElizaMarie I am gonna try to finish the Minors either today or tomorrow :) I am really enjoying this book! 3y
ElizaMarie @jb72 yeah I thought that was super sweet! I love how down to earth this author is. I feel like she takes the “fear“ out of learning this stuff. Also like how she is mentioning it she makes it just “make sense“ 3y

Started reading this one today. And I already love it! I am hoping to practice Tarot more next year as one of my #NewYearNewYou goals for #21for21 :) This will be a good starting place :)

Thanks @jb72 for recommending it :)

jb72 That is awesome! I am hoping to start reading that one tomorrow. Maybe #buddyread? 3y
Moonprismpower Oooh I have this book! I read it but am not a practitioner. Although you wouldn‘t know it with all the tarot decks I own. What deck do you use? 3y
ElizaMarie @Moonprismpower I have never really tried before. I just got my first deck “deviant moon tarot” 3y

ElizaMarie @jb72 I‘m in!!! I‘m thinking I‘ll finish the Major Arcana by Monday (pg 76) think you can do that by Monday? Or tell me what time line you were thinking 3y
jb72 @ElizaMarie I may be able to catch up to page 76 by Monday. 3y
ElizaMarie Okay :) I really like the no-nonsene way the author writes :) 3y
Moonprismpower Ha! I have that deck on my shelf! It‘s beautiful. 3y

I‘m not going to lie: I got about a third of the way through this book when things just started making sense. Going into it, I had no idea what I was doing with tarot. Once I had a basic understanding of a few cards through this book, things just kind of fell into place. It‘s fantastic for beginners, and I highly recommend it for anyone wanting a clearer, more example-based explanation of the classic tarot meanings.
