Neon in Daylight
Neon in Daylight: A Novel | Hermione Hoby
22 posts | 14 read | 27 to read
"What do you get when a writer of extreme intelligence, insight, style and beauty chronicles the lives of self-absorbed hedonistsThe Great Gatsby, Bright Lights, Big City, and now Neon in Daylight. Hermione Hoby paints a garish world that drew me in and held me spellbound. She is a marvel." Ann Patchett, author of Commonwealth Three lives collide in New York City in the summer of 2012. An exhilarating debut novel that announces the arrival of a writer who "channels the spirit of Joan Didion and the keen observational eye of Ben Lerner to show us the here and now." (Alexandra Kleeman) New York City in 2012, the sweltering summer before Hurricane Sandy hits. Kate, a young woman newly arrived from England, is staying in a Manhattan apartment while she tries to figure out her future. She has two unfortunate responsibilities during her time in America: to make regular Skype calls to her miserable boyfriend back home, and to cat-sit an indifferent feline named Joni Mitchell. The city has other plans for her. In New York's parks and bodegas, its galleries and performance spaces, its bars and clubs crowded with bodies, Kate encounters two strangers who will transform her stay: Bill, a charismatic but embittered writer made famous by the movie version of his only novel; and Inez, his daughter, a recent high school graduate who supplements her Bushwick cafe salary by enacting the fantasies of men she meets on Craigslist. Unmoored from her old life, Kate falls into an infatuation with both of them. Set in a heatwave that feels like it will never break, Neon In Daylight marries deep intelligence with captivating characters to offer us a joyful, unflinching exploration of desire, solitude, and the thin line between life and art.

This was a spontaneous pick for me! I knew nothing about this book and decided to give it a chance because I love stories set in NYC. It was okay. The plot and characters seems pretty cliche to me… divorcé dad having relationship with younger woman, rebellious daughter, fraught long-distance relationship. It was fine, but it wasn‘t fresh.

Meh. I probably would have DNF‘d this one, but it was really short and so I pushed through. Just wasn‘t grabbed by these characters and there was no real plot to speak of.

emilyhaldi Hmmm this sounds really interesting. Litsy rating isn‘t too good though 🤔but I love a NYC based story and I see the book has a blurb from Ann Patchett ❤️❤️❤️ 6y
Cathythoughts @emilyhaldi I know ! All the signs are good EXCEPT the Litsy rating ..... tough call 6y
Cinfhen Same thought process @emilyhaldi @Cathythoughts I‘m gonna try for a library copy or a used copy!!! But it does sound intriguing 6y

As someone who did live out her 20s in NY and didn't quite feel right in my skin then, I was drawn to this book right away, but it wasn't everything I hoped. The characters are well drawn, depiction of the city felt truthful, definitely funny at times, but I didn't like spending so much time with the father and daughter, who didn't really have fleshed out arcs or growth. I was more into Kate's self discovery, and this felt short-shrifted.

You know, I debated between giving this four or five stars and—fuck it—I‘m giving it five. There are elements and characters that really moved me; and the way certain scenes were so well put together and then connected, it got gripping, kind of like a thriller novel.

“What a dick-move of evolution, to render faces more conspicuous at the moment they most longed to be effaced.”

This book has LINES.

Been a long time since I posted here. In the last year we bought a condo, sold out place, and moved (repeatedly) while we renovated the entire place and then life just got chaotic. Finally starting to feel settled. Kicking off my long weekend with this, in my favourite place.

Ok, I'm usually pretty fair about books and try not to have more than 3 going at any given time, but I legitimately FORGOT about this one. It didn't capture me, and while it has good dialogue and 3D characters the plot was one pothole after another that was poorly paved and made for an unpleasant journey.

I'm having a hard time with this book. It's not holding onto my attention like it should be...😓😓😓

Pickpick

Kate is a British woman who needs a break from her own life spends a summer apartment-sitting in NY, where she forms unlikely relationships with a young free-spirited woman and her father, a writer coasting on the fame of his first novel. None of the characters are fully formed and there is not much plot to speak of, but I do like stories of alienation abroad.

jouleian So far the only thing keeping me involved is the dialogue. And Inez. 7y
AlizaApp @jouleian agreed, Inez was the best part! 7y
Kdibeck0 Inez is the entertainment for sure, wish they had done more with the Craigslist story though. And what happened to Dana?? 7y

This book does not work on so many levels. I think I cannot relate to this type of book anymore. Hate to bail on a book I purchased but I have 150 pages and not sure what I just read.

L_auren Agreed. I read it all and it doesn‘t get better 7y

I‘m so easily swayed by signed editions..... 🙄 #bookhaul

But I was pretty happy to pick up Neon in Daylight especially because I couldn‘t make it to the signing last week. I love Books Are Magic ☺️

From the current issue of #EntertainmentWeekly ‘s Must List.

FountainBookstore EW has the best book coverage out there. Clean and interesting recommendations and relatively free of the secret handshake crap so evident in other media channels. I read it every week. 7y

It is strange to read ARCs and wonder where I'll be and what I'll be up to on their pub dates. Anyway, I'm liking this one quite a bit.
