Book #1 in the underlander chronicles. My only complaint was that Gregor must be the smartest 11-yr old around. He really should be more like 16. This story was sort of like an urban Alice in wonderland. Gregor & his sister fall into a tunnel and land in the underworld where they need to save his dad, win a war, fulfill a prophecy, and hopefully all get back home safe.

This SF book throws students right into a new world as 11yo Gregor and his baby sister Boots fall through a laundry room grate into the dark depths of the Underland, meeting all sorts of strange creatures and even humans. As the first in a series of five, this book serves as a great introduction to how creative SF can be as it entices students with quests and prophecies and plenty of world-building.

kgarzon This book could work well for IR. Because setting is a big component of the fantasy genre, students could map out the fantasy world of the Underland or analyze the creatures that live there, perhaps even brainstorming their own worlds and inhabitants. This guide suggests similar geography and science applications: https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/gregor-overlan... 5y
kgarzon UDL principle 3.1 (Activate or supply background knowledge) can be demonstrated with identifying common characteristics of the creatures that live in the Underland and predicting future ones based on prior knowledge. EL 4 (Link lesson topic to students‘ prior knowledge) can be applied by connecting themes in this text to other texts/media, such as Alice in Wonderland. 5y
KevinKantola That books seems pretty interesting not gonna lie 😮 5y
DrSpalding My nephews fell in love with reading because of this book 5y

#LetsTravelJuly This is a great middle grades series about Gregor and his little sister Boots, and how they end up in the #Underground world below their apartment building. In the underground world, they encounter giant bats, spiders, and rats while trying to help the Underlanders who live there.

LOVED THIS!!! This is the MG fantasy series I didn't know I needed!! It's a little Alice in Wonderland, a little Narnia and a lot of NYC underbelly! Suspend all reality and follow Gregor and Boots on their adventure into the Underland and Regalia! I'll be plowing through all 5 books as fast as I can!

Why yes, I did take out the second book when I was only halfway done with the first... 😂
@rretzler You were so right about this one!!!! 👏🤘

IamIamIam @thegirlwiththelibrarybag Right?! My husband said even though there are 5 books, I didn't need to read them all at once. I felt like that was a challenge! 😂 6y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag Those are fighting words 😂 6y
rretzler So glad you are loving the series! 😁 I‘m the same way, if I like a series, it‘s NECESSARY to get all the books at once! 😂 6y

I remember this book specifically being mentioned in one of the Lemoncello books and the idea made me laugh, as well as the nod to Kafka!

@theresidentromantic I think I need to get this for Gene!!!

rretzler This was a great series! I read it years ago to my two sons and we loved it - still have a couple of family jokes about it. 6y
IamIamIam @rretzler Thanks! I didn't know it was a series! I'm not going to lie... I'm still a bit skeeved by the roaches but I should have expected it! 😂 6y
rretzler If you read the series, by the end you will love the roaches! I just wish Suzanne Collins would write more books - both this series and the Hunger Games were fantastic, and I want more! 6y

theresidentromantic @IamIamIam You know, it's very funny. I've spent my whole life talking to Gene about books. But I've never actually seen the man read, even just for a quick second lolol And I haven't read this one! But talk about a diverse lady. Did you know she also wrote the Little Bear books?? 6y
IamIamIam @theresidentromantic Holy cow, she wrote stories for the Little Bear show and Oswald and Shelby Woo... AND worked on the Clarissa Explains it All staff too!!!!! I had no idea!!!! And I caught him reading at St. Patrick's Day... 😂 I gave him a ghost story book & he got a little lost before he remembered he was among actual company. LOL 6y

@Lexeegee thank you so much. I recommended Gregor all the time when I was still a children‘s librarian, but I never actually read it. So now I can!!! And I read my first Mass book this year but it‘s her other series. I‘m told this one is better. Plus, sloths!!!! I love it all. Thank you so much. #cupidgoespostal @BookishMarginalia

Wow that picture is dark. I‘ll post a better onetomorrow. I still haven‘t replaced the light from the power surge

I could have sworn I read this as a kid, but I sure don‘t remember any of it, and I would have already been 16 when it was published— unlikely but not impossible that I picked it up then. I‘m enjoying it now! #currentlyreading #kidlit #homeschoolbookclub

A new friend suggested these. Suzanne Collins wrote this series before the Hunger Games.
I am enjoying the series, it's quite imaginative. I would suggest this series for boys!

Fantastic middle grade fantasy adventure. It was predictable but that didn‘t take anything away from the story. I read a ton of middle grade fantasy so maybe I‘m just good at seeing where everything is headed.

The current MG book favorite in our household is 'Gregor the Overlander' - the first-in-series about a boy who discovers a subterranean world beneath his apt building. Rich with anthropomorphized and outsized rats, bats, and cockroaches, it's nonetheless a rich and amazing fantasy world with themes of friendship, and a quest plot line that runs through the five-book arc. N.B. A bit dark in some places (e.g. Death, betrayal) #FunFridayPhoto

The lesser-known middle reader series by Hunger Games author Suzanne Collins. Gregor finds himself in a pitch black underworld where people ride giant bats, bugs are as big as humans, and light equals life. Such an adventure!! And I still greet fellow readers with, "Fly high, overlander!" ?| ⭐️⭐️⭐️
