This is a short little book about meditation. It is a basic guide to what meditation is and why it‘s important. Something that I thought was interesting was that he talked a lot about how meditation doesn‘t have a purpose. It‘s not supposed to make us more peaceful, happier, better, etc. Those might be side effects, but if you go into it with that expectation, you‘re missing the point. It‘s about accepting what is, not trying to get better.

A Jon Kabat-Zinn book from 1994. Not that that should be seen as any sign of outdated-ness: I‘ve been meditating for a while now and sometimes you can lose track of the “why” ~> this book, full of tips/tricks for looking at the everyday as anything but mundane, puts the “mindful” back into my mindfulness meditation. Watch “Healing and the Mind,” an old TV series that spotlights his breathing classes for patients w/ chronic pain = really inspiring.

I had high expectations about this book, but having now read it, am left with somewhat mixed feelings. I did mostly enjoy it and certainly gained from reading it.
I didn't particularly enjoy the frequent use of long quotations from other people in the book, because I found them distracting, although I did enjoy his personal experiences as practical examples because it made it easier to understand the message he wanted to convey.

I really enjoyed this book! It‘s a great book to read all at once. But I think it would also be a great resource if you just want to pick and choose certain sections. 5/5⭐️

UwannaPublishme So is Bookly as much fun as everyone says? 3y
PurpleyPumpkin @UwannaPublishme You know, I downloaded this app ages ago, but didn‘t end up using it. Then recently, I saw some Littens posting about it, so I thought I‘d try it. You can use it for 10 books before subscribing. I like it, but it‘s pricey for what it is. But I‘ll continue at least for the 10 books. We‘ll see!🤔 3y
UwannaPublishme Ha! I downloaded it a while ago too. Didn‘t realize it was a subscription. It does look cool though! Hope you‘re doing well and gearing up for that beautiful summer weather! Sending hugs your way. 🤗 3y

Amazing book to learn more deeply about mindfulness and connect and truly understand the concept. Really great guide for meditation too.

You might be tempted to avoid the messiness of daily living for the tranquility of stillness and peacefulness. This of course would be an attachment to stillness, and like any strong attachment, it leads to delusion. It arrests development and short-circuits the cultivation of wisdom.

I started some sort of meditation practice earlier this year and when this book came up for #doublespin for April I took the opportunity to read it. It works for me because of my prior experience so I could relate to alot of what he talked about and of ways to perhaps "deepen" my practice.
I do not think I would recommend this to someone who is looking for a How-To book.

It‘s Day 1 of the #BFC28 Challenge! I‘m excited to participate and plan to read 7 books in the next 28 days! That‘s a lofty goal for me, but my job in healthcare (Physical Therapist) is changing a lot in the next few weeks, so I may have extra time on my hands 😥 I‘ve also set a goal to meditate daily and get outside for a daily walk (weather and isolation rules permitting). Looking forward to sharing this journey with the rest of you! #BFC

ElizaMarie Looks like we have very similar goals. I love this!

Do you think you will work from home or just have extended time off? Or just a ton of downtime where you can read at work?

Good luck! I'm looking forward to your posts here!

wanderinglynn Great goals! 🙌🏻 4y
JenniferTapler @ElizaMarie right now we‘re not seeing patients in person, but just calling them and checking in. We‘re trying to get video telehealth set up, (I work for Kaiser), but getting that going for physicians first is a priority. Once we get that, we may work from home. For now, I expect a lot of downtime in the clinic. 4y
ElizaMarie @JenniferTapler Sounds good. I am hoping that I am gonna give some reading time at work during the next contract. It might happen but who knows. (I am a psychiatric travel nurse). 4y

Been slowly reading this one at lunch. I‘ve meditated before, but I‘m finding this one to be very squishy rather than a good guide. Anyone read this one? What did you think?

Crazeedi I read this years ago, at a time when I needed it. He writes beautiful words 5y

Starting a new lunch book today. This may also be the only day I get to sit outside for lunch before the heat & humidity overtake Omaha this week.

Tamra We got it yesterday in MN and it‘s looking like a hostile take-over for a spell. 😅 5y

2016, Book 22 "The weather of our own lives is not to be ignored or denied. It is to be encountered, honoured, felt, known for what it is, and held in high awareness since it can kill us. In holding it in this way, we come to know a deeper silence, stillness and wisdom than we have thought possible, right within the storms. Mountains have this to teach us, and more if we can come to listen."

On the train last week a homeless man was asking for money to take the train. The 2 girls across from me started giggling and laughing at him. I was reading this book - the part - if you cannot do any good, at least cause as little harm as possible. This book is about compassion and the practice of kindness. Kindness to yourself and to others. I think the teenagers could not see how easy it is to get from who they are to who this man is.

LauraBeth Sadly, it's a pretty easy road from riches to rags. 8y
Notafraidofwords @LauraBeth yes! & both the man and the girls were lacking. The man = money. The girls = compassion. 8y
Megabooks Terrible! Immaturity is not an excuse for bad behavior. 8y

Notafraidofwords @Ebooksandcooks no it's not. Compassion doesn't seem to exist anymore. 8y
SusanInTiburon And we can practice compassion for the girls too. I always feel miserable when I realize that I have behaved badly. I expect they will, too. I love this book, by the way! Great post and comments. 8y
Notafraidofwords @SusanInTiburon thanks! I think the man and the young girls deserve compassion based on the fact they're humans. I loved this book a lot. 8y
