Monet: Itinerant of Light | Salva Rubio
18 posts | 11 read | 16 to read
The life of the great French painter, one of the founders of Impressionism, is narrated in lush comic art reminiscent of his style. From the Salon des Refuses ("Salon of the Rejected") and many struggling years without recognition, money, and yet a family to raise, all the way to great success, critically and financially, Monet pursued insistently one vision: catching the light in painting, refusing to compromise on this ethereal pursuit. It cost him dearly but he was a beacon for his contemporaries. We discover in this comics biography how he came to this vision as well as his turbulent life pursuing it.

A graphic novel exploring the life of Monet. While his paintings are beautiful explorations of light, His personal choices are often selfish and frustrating. He spent most of his life in debt while never curbing his spending. I loved learning more about the other artists in the impressionist movement though. I also loved the way the artists incorporated guys art into their telling of his story.

In this graphic book Monet is an old man looking back on his life.

I can‘t quite put my finger on, but something was missing for me to make this a pick.

I enjoyed learning about some of the other figures in the impressionist movement, including Renoir, Manet, and Bazille, and the overall progression of their initial rejection to eventual acceptance by the French academies and art critics.

vivastory I was thinking the other day about how incredible the Impressionist collection at Art Institute of Chicago is 3y
Kimberlone @vivastory I would love to visit somebody! I was reminded of the scene in Ferris Bueller when they are appreciating the George Seurat painting! 3y
Pip2 My wife and I went to that Art Museum in Chicago, and its honestly one of the best I have been to. They also have a really interesting miniaturist collection there. My favorite painter of all time would have to be Renoir closely followed by Van Gogh. 3y

I thought these panels did an excellent job of highlighting some of Monet‘s most famous paintings, some of which feature his wife Camille and son. I liked that the illustrations reflected Monet‘s unique style of painting but also fit the graphic novel format.

The graphic novel is bookended by old Monet preparing for and then recovering from cataract surgery. It ends with this lovely panel layout of some of his most famous paintings of the lily ponds in his garden.

This was a lovely graphic novel with beautiful illustrations inspired by Monet‘s impressionistic painting style. I read it all in one sitting last night when I was having a hard time falling asleep. It was available through my library‘s Hoopla catalogue. Not only were the illustrations excellent, the prose (translated from French, I believe) telling the story of Monet‘s life was excellent. I will post a few more images separately.

Kenyazero This is an excellent read. It's fun seeing what pages you picked to feature! 3y
Kimberlone @Kenyazero i took a lot more screenshots but those were the ones I had the most to say about! 3y
Kenyazero @Kimberlone I bet it was hard to slim them down to this selection! (edited) 3y

This is a beautiful biographic work. The illustrations draw inspiration from real art pieces from the late 1800s (not all belonging to Monet), which are listed out at the end. Throughout, Monet‘s life is vividly portrayed in impressionist-like style, humanizing this famous historical figure. This is a must for art enthusiasts and graphic novel lovers alike. #art #Monet #History #Biography #comic #NonFiction

Though the art style in the book is completely different fromMonet‘s paintings (more gauche then oil) I really enjoyed this book. It was beautifully done and brings a host of emotions with it. Come for the story stay for the beautiful art.

4/5

Despite the name of this graphic novel being Monet, when I picked it up I kept thinking it was about Van Gogh, so I was a little surprised when it opened with an old man getting cataract surgery.

This was a great introduction to Monet's life and taught me more about the impressionists in general. The art is very stylized and beautiful, and I loved the afterword in the end that went into more detail about the inspiration for all the art.

I'm not often too interested in art history; I love going to museums, but I just like what I like. A good story, though, is a good story, and I enjoyed this look at Monet's life and the rise of impressionism. Especially interesting was the author's notes on his process in researching and writing. Thanks to @TK421 for making me aware of it with his post

TK421 I'm glad you liked it! I agree, the author's notes were very interesting. 6y

#graphicnovelsnews is here with a book that kept me awake last night. The most beautiful biography of Claude Monet with his famous pictures‘ history and a story about Impressionism movement. Stragglers, madness, poverty were in the first half of Monet life before he found success.
Available in Hoopla but Check out the real print with magnificent colors. The book is a nominee for Will Eisner 2018 award

Since I had fallen behind in reading because my job has been crazy, I decided to use a graphic novel for #booked2018 #floweroncover. Happened to find this on hoopla and thought it sounded interesting. It was and it incorporates Monet's works into the story. Interesting biography. (Yes those are flowers on the lily pads.)
