19 posts | 27 read | 19 to read
A young woman travels alone to a remote island to uncover a past she never knew was hers in this thrilling modern ghost story When a mysterious letter lands in Hallie James's mailbox, her life is upended. Hallie was raised by her loving father, having been told her mother died in a fire decades earlier. But it turns out that her mother, Madlyn, was alive until very recently. Why would Hallie's father have taken her away from Madlyn? What really happened to her family thirty years ago? In search of answers, Hallie travels to the place where her mother lived, a remote island in the middle of the Great Lakes. The stiff islanders fix her first with icy stares and then unabashed amazement as they recognize why she looks so familiar, and Hallie quickly realizes her family's dark secrets are enmeshed in the history of this strange place. But not everyone greets her with such a chilly receptiona coffee-shop owner and the family's lawyer both warm to Hallie, and the possibility of romance blooms. And then there's the grand Victorian house bequeathed to hermaybe it's the eerie atmosphere or maybe it's the prim, elderly maid who used to work for her mother, but Hallie just can't shake the feeling that strange things are starting to happen . . . In The Tale of Halcyon Crane, Wendy Webb has created a haunting story full of delicious thrills, vibrant characters, and family secrets.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ this tale was slow starting but kept me wanting to find out what happens. a young woman finds out her life with her father wasn‘t fully true. she finds out her mother has been looking for her. her whole world is flipped.
mystery of what happened when she was a little girl that made her dad take her away.
the ending was a little disappointing. 🙁

I have read mixed reviews about this one but I really liked it. It reminded me of early Victoria Holt tales from my teens. The couple of twists were cleverly executed and the main character discovered her history in a slow and steady way. A good read for me.

I don‘t know what I would have done differently but didn‘t like the ending. I wanted certain relationships to flesh out. I wanted more honesty from other characters. The Iris explanation bugged me for some reason. The first 2/3 of the book mostly had me. The last part meh.

⭐ ⭐ ⭐ https://suspensebookreviews.home.blog/2021/08/19/the-tale-of-halcyon-crane-by-we...

An easy light gothic tale about a woman, Hallie, who inherits her dead mother's Victorian home. Hallie living her life believing her mother died when she was 5 soon finds herself on a mysterious island, learning unbelievable truths about her family and past. Filled with ghosts, witches, and an eerie setting. Enjoyable, but not great.

9 hours for #Deweys24HourReadathon! Now time for bed. 💤

But first, points. Today was also the last day of #Ghostathon20 & #FraterFestRAT. I also finished the tagged book and Disfigured by Amanda LeDuc for #DisabilityReadathon. It was fantastic! So so good. Definitely worthy of its own review when I‘m less tired. In total, +1,176 points.

Night, Littens! Hope your #readathon-ing is going well! ✨

Audible Plus book included with prime membership, or something. (I've kinda lost track of what Audible is doing). Gothic ghost story with all the same old cliches. Nothing original but its a cozy read perfect for this time of year. ☠

Nu-Bibliophile @MellieAntoinete I love the series but book 2 (Headmistress of Rosemere) seemed rushed compared to the other two books, but I still enjoyed it! I wish her new book would be released sooner😀 6y

LOVED this audiobook! The narrator was excellent and kept me thoroughly creeped out with her whispers, giggles, and eerie singing. Lots of ghosts - in the past and the present, both figurative and literal- and familial mysteries to be unraveled. Highly recommend! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Wendy Webb writes a fabulous Gothic mansion, and really brings the setting to life. I enjoyed this meandering haunting of discovery... but I wish the ending had more oomph. #AllHallowsRead #gothic #haunting

Before I lost my father, I never understood the rituals surrounding funerals...But now I know why we do those things. It's busywork, all of it. I had so much to take care of so many arrangements to make so many people to inform, I didn't have a moment to be engulfed by the ocean of grief that was lapping at my heels. Instead, I waded through the shallows, performing task after task, grateful to have duties to propel me forward. #wickedwomenwriters

Wendy Webb - The Tale of Halcyon Crane ****

Interesting, atmospheric ghost story. It was less creepy than expected. The main characters don't experience all that much ghost activity themselves. It's mostly through the housekeeper's storytelling we learn stuff about the ghosts.
I LOVED the Great Lakes setting. The story took place on Mackinac Island. (The author renamed the island and moved it from lake Huron to Lake Superior)
