A Discovery of Witches | Deborah E. Harkness

Mehso-so

Imagine being a supernatural of the vampire, witch or demon variety, and having people telling you what to do, always. I can't imagine vampires would want to live forever with this sort of bureaucratic bullshit dominating their lives. I listened to the audiobook. The narrator was adept at the various accents but the weird way she drags out her "twooo"s grates. A book this large would benefit from having a second narrator of the male variety. ⬇️

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick The underlying premise was good, but this was entirely too long. This falls into nearly insta-love territory. Wine, manuscripts, yoga, food...I think the only foods I'm not certain Matthew eats are tacos, pizza, and quince. While I'm on Matthew, I did not get his appeal. He's controlling and I think he thrives on crisis. (1500 years on Earth might do that to you) Diana was boring. I understand why she doesn't embrace her magic, ⬇️ 4y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick but considering how the supernaturals didn't trust the other species, you'd think her aunt would have insisted she learn something. The Bishop house was fun, I liked Hamish, and I am intrigued by the events that are leading to book 2. I haven't decided if I hate myself enough to continue with the series. 😁 4y

TheAromaofBooks Great progress!! 4y
aperfectmjk I agree about the second narrator. It's such a long book, but I guess because of how the chapters are written it would have been hard to switch up narrators. 4y
DieAReader @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick 👏🏻 I completely agree with your opinion on this one. Took me forever to read it & I disliked more than I liked. That being said, I procrastinated & dreading starting book 2. I was “inspired” to give it some attention yesterday & can say that so far (chapter 11/42) & I‘m enjoying it. There is a lot of character banter that I‘ve really gotten a kick out of. I like it much better than the 1st (as it stands now)😉 4y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick @Squidget Good to hear that book 2 seems better from someone with similar feelings about book 1. I think I'll hold off until January and try to limit my listening to 1-2 hours daily so I'm not burnt out by it. This might be a case where I'd enjoy the show more if I gave it a try. 4y

I am not one for legal books, fiction or non-fiction, but I joined in on the #SundsyBuddyRead. This is very thorough, giving us some background about the Borden family and the aftermath of those vicious murders. We move to details of the court case, with day by day descriptions of the case and includes black & white photos of the crime scenes, and closes with the verdict and a brief aftermath. This is DENSE. Well researched, but lots of names ⬇️

Pickpick

The October #ThatsClassic pick. Some of the book feels repetitive, but still a good early gothic horror. Perhaps it's knowledge of how it all pans out, but it didn't feel very suspenseful. As others mentioned before, it's not exactly a female friendly world we're viewing but that's how women were regarded in the 1890s. Thanks for the push to reread it 25 years later @Annie1215

Pickpick

The overall story was good with a strong ending, but I have 2 gripes. 1. Niki is deaf (yay disability inclusivity) but since she's excellent at reading lips, there is zero sign language and it's super easy for her to follow along with group conversations. 2. Her boyfriend Terry calls her Funny Face, which isn't weird on it's own, but considering her always calls her that, especially in serious situations, grated my nerves. Good for 2 hours of fun.

TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! 4y

CocoReads That‘s great work. 4y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick @jb72 I probably read some when I was younger but sadly I don't remember. This is my first in recent memory. I did order a newer one that just didn't get read this month. I'm curious to see if there's a huge difference in style. YA seems to be a totally different ballgame the last 10-15 years. 4y

2 interwoven stories here: Snyder's is set in 1925 Hollywood and focuses on actress Pearl. Stephen King wrote the second which gives us the origin story of an 1880s Old West Outlaw, Skinner Sweet. It's a bit of a new twist on the vampire and the ones are vicious, not sparkly lovers.

Here‘s my total for the #CocoTurns50 readathon. My brain is too fried atm to figure out any of the other readathons. 😆 So that‘s 300 points for this one.

I hope you have/had an awesome birthday @CocoReads 🤗🥳
