Book of Disquiet
Book of Disquiet | Fernando Pessoa
Fernando Pessoa was many writers in one. He attributed his prolific writings to a wide range of alternate selves, each of which had a distinct biography, ideology. and horoscope. When he died in 935, Pessoa left behind a trunk filled with unfinished and unpublished writings, among which were the remarkable pages that make up his posthumous masterpiece, The Book of Disquiet, an astonishing work that, in George Steiner's words, "gives to Lisbon the haunting spell of Joyce's Dublin or Kafka's Prague."Published for the first time some fifty years after his death, this unique collection of short, aphoristic paragraphs comprises the "autobiography" of Bernardo Soares, one of Pessoa's alternate selves. Part intimate diary, part prose poetry, part descriptive narrative, captivatingly translated by Richard Zenith, The Book of Disquiet is one of the greatest works of the twentieth century.

For me, one of the most attractive aspects of the #boxwallabook box, is not knowing much about the authors or books included. I‘m introduced to authors & books I may not stumble upon here on Litsy or in a bookstore, etc. They move me, push me as a reader, explore themes & ideas that are heartbreaking, & beautiful & always leave me wanting more. Also, I love how each book takes me on a worldwide adventure - somewhere exotic, foreign & romantic.

slategreyskies I‘ve never heard of this book box. I‘ll check it out. It looks interesting. :) 2mo
catebutler @slategreyskies It is honestly one of my all time favourites. I have never been disappointed by their selection, and love that they are books I normally wouldn‘t come across or find on my own. Love to hear what you think, if you give them a try. 😊👋🏼 2mo

Highly enjoyable intelligent read! I had no expectations, but in the end I got so much out of it. In many ways it reminds me of Oscar Wilde‘s writings, even though it‘s different. Fantastic translation! “Literature is the pleasantest way of ignoring life”. It is for sure one of the most intriguing autobiographies I‘ve ever read.

I have managed to fall in love with this city. 💜 #lisbon #lisboa #lovevacations
I have also managed to pick up my fourth(!) copy of the tagged book, this one in a third language. #iacceptihaveaproblem

SqueakyChu So glad you‘re having a great time! I‘ve heard wonderful things about Lisbon (and Portugal) from two other friends who also visited that city this month. 2y
Mdargusch Beautiful! 2y
Swe_Eva @SqueakyChu I'm not surprised, it's wonderful! 2y

SqueakyChu Have you read this book yet? 2y
Swe_Eva @SqueakyChu Yes! That is, I‘ve read one of my copies. 😂 I haven‘t yet read the Margaret Jull Costa-translation to English, the Swedish translation, or the original Portuguese that I just bought. The Portuguese will have to be a shelf-warmer until I know Portuguese properly, though. 2y
SqueakyChu Is it good? 2y
SqueakyChu Are you learning Portuguese? 2y
Swe_Eva @SqueakyChu It's my book with the most underlines. 😉 It's not a regular story, though, quite different, and unfinished... I think it may be odd enough for you - Google it first, though, just to get an idea. 2y
Swe_Eva @SqueakyChu I am. I'm having a little bit of a hard time, as I tend to mix it up with the little Spanish I have. The hardest thing, though, is understanding spoken Portuguese, they speak SO fast! 2y
SqueakyChu Cool! You should start following the thread of kidzdoc on LT. He just returned from Lisbon, and plans to retire there in about 8 years. He posted some great pictures and information. He‘s going back in November. Look for his thread in the 75 Books challenge for 2018. You can tell him I sent you! 😃 2y
SqueakyChu My younger son speaks Portuguese, well, Brazilian Portuguese from hanging out with his Brazilian friends he met while in high school. We live in such a fabulous diverse community here in Rockville. (edited) 2y
SqueakyChu @Swe_Eva Sounds like my kind of book. Stacked! 2y
Swe_Eva @SqueakyChu I think I looked in on his thread before I left - I will certainly revisit. Loads of people retire in Portugal. Their economy is so bad that it‘s cheap for foreigners. Unfortunately, the Portuguese can‘t afford it, so the ones that can leave for other countries. Huge brain drain going on. 😔😠 2y
Swe_Eva @SqueakyChu I‘m trying to learn European Portuguese and it‘s difficult to do from the US. Love diverse communities where you can get a whole language “for free!” 👍🏻😂 2y
Swe_Eva @SqueakyChu Hope you like it!! 2y
SqueakyChu Wow. I don‘t know anyone from Portugal (except one person [Joachim] who lives there whom I never met). He and I are both BookCrossers and Little Free Library stewards. kidzdoc met him during his Portugal trip. (edited) 2y
Swe_Eva @SqueakyChu Love how these various bookgroups lets you meet people from all over the world! 💜 2y
SqueakyChu @Swe_Eva Me, too! That‘s how I met you! 😃 2y
Swe_Eva @SqueakyChu Very true!! 👍🏻 2y
Liz_M I love that you have four editions on purpose. I had to join a book cataloging site because I accidentally bought the fourth copy of a book I feel I "should" read. Still haven't read it though. ? ? ? 2y
Swe_Eva @Liz_M Haha!! That's why I joined LibraryThing, after my third copy of The Master and Margarita... The 4 of this one is on purpose, though... 😉 (edited) 2y

Swe_Eva Such a fantastic trip, this book. Due for a reread! 2y
youneverarrived 💙💙 2y
batsy @erzascarletbookgasm It's less a novel with a plot and a narrative arc, and more fragments and vignettes. It seems even Pessoa wasn't sure how to arrange his fragments into a cohesive whole. Thus each English edition sort of remakes the book, in a way, by a rearrangement of the fragments. Hence "complete edition" is a bold marketing hook ? 2y
batsy @Swe_Eva I know, for me too. I'm hoping to spring for the new English edition later this year, maybe, and reread it with the "new" version ??? 2y
Leftcoastzen I adore it and have yet to read complete edition. 2y
batsy @Leftcoastzen It's like a gift that's waiting for us! 💝 2y
Swe_Eva @batsy I‘ve read the William Boyd translation and have the Margaret Jull Costa waiting to be read. She‘s my all time favorite translator, so it should be good! My mum picked me up a Swedish translation as well, so I may attack that one first when I go home for vacation... 🤓 2y

Swe_Eva @batsy I am trying to learn Portuguese at the moment (because of personal reasons), so I'll let you know if I ever get to read it in the original. 🤤😂 2y

“Isolation has carved me in its image and likeness.”

This is such a beautifully written book 🖤

Written in fragmentary, diary type format. It‘s one I go back to and read bits of now and again. The narrator, Soares, spends a lot of time thinking and in solitude and gets easily #tiredoftalking. #aprella

@batsy Are you aware of this recently published hardcover edition from New Directions? I checked it out from the library; I will definitely be buying a copy. It's a great replacement for my cherished, highlighted & tattered copy published by Exact Change.

Leniverse "That looks interesting", I thought, and went to Goodreads to add it to my TBR. Turns out I already did that in November last year. 2y
Leniverse But it looks like this particular translation is the one to go with, yeah? So I should make note of that. 2y
vivastory @Leniverse Margaret J Costa is the translator for this volume. I've never read a bad translation by her. Who is the other translator? If it's Richard Zenith, his versions are also excellent. 2y
See All 9 Comments
Leniverse Yes, Richard Zenith is the translator of the Penguin edition, at least. But it seems a lot of editions are abridged, so I better check page numbers before I buy anything! 2y
vivastory @Leniverse The Costa edition is unabridged. If possible, I'd try to get that edition. It's a great design 2y

vivastory @Dorianna It's beautiful. Peter Mendelsund designed it 2y
batsy Yes! It's on my TBR for sure and I will definitely treat myself to it hopefully within the next few months 😀 Did you see the British edition by Serpent's Tail? It's beautiful but a bit more muted. Love the energy of the Mendelsund cover 2y

"I have lived so much without ever being lived. I have thought so much without ever having thought. I feel weighed down by worlds of unenacted violence, of stillborn adventures.
I am sick of what I never had nor will have, weary of gods always just about to exist."

Pessoa hits me so hard with his preciseness on describing the inner battle that I currently face. This book, like Pessoa himself said, truly reflect my cowardice.
