The Seven Daughters of Eve | Bryan Sykes

Repost for @mrsmarch :
Inspired a bit by #backpackeurope, I was wondering if Littens who‘ve done commercial DNA testing would be interested in doing a #readyourgenes group. My map would look like the above. I could help with making “itineraries” and set up a Google signup sheet. If there‘s enough interest, I‘ll launch something!

alisiakae I love this idea! I would possibly be interested, but couldn‘t add in any new challenges until after October. 6y
Laura317 That sounds like such fun! I am game to try. 6y

brilliantglow This would be really cool 6y
MarthaG Very interested in doing this. 6y
janeycanuck Neat idea - sadly, my DNA came back 97% British, 3% Scandinavian so it‘d be pretty boring for me 😂 6y

Schlinkles Super cool idea! 6y
KellyHunsakerReads I would ... but probably not until autumn as I am doing the former challenge. And the manbooker long list is out at month‘s end. 6y
mrsmarch @Hunsakermountain Autumn sounds prime to me. I have this notion that once my oldest gets to kindergarten things will ease up 😂 6y

Pickpick

Finished my first book for #4in48readathon! Having trouble focusing since my wife got in a car accident. She's fine, but ugh, I want her to be home now!

Anyway, Bryan Sykes writes well and explains the science admirably. Only quibble is the pure fiction about what he thinks the lives of the seven clan mothers were mostly like. People will read it as truthful reconstruction rather than an utter guess.

LiteraryinLawrence Oh no! I‘m so sorry that happened! 6y
Clare-Dragonfly Yikes, I'm glad she's okay! 6y

Welp, it's the weekend here now! It's 2am and I've made some quite good progress with this for @Syndelle777 's #4in48readathon, and petted bunnies AND... uh, messed around online looking at memes...

Finding this very readable and well explained, albeit slightly out of date. Sykes tells the story of the research well, and actually manages to be funny at times as well.

Sleep now though!

I love this book on the science behind the ancient secret we all harbor: the "name" of our maternal ancestor. Mito DNA is only inheritable from our mother, so it passes from mother, to daughter, & so on, & so forth, back to a single common female ancestor. It mutates roughly once every 10k yrs, so it is a slow clock. These are my inheritrices, River & Cleopatra, ultimately daughters of Ulrike, daughter of Ursula, daughter of Eve. #5monthsold

#Day2 #SeptemberPhotoChallenge #numberintitle I have plenty of cookbooks with numbers in their titles but a quick perusal of my other shelves & stacks only turned up two other book titles with numbers--science & genetics and a funny P.I./Grim Reaper... At least they coordinate well with their orange covers! 👍😀 #somethingforsept

RealLifeReading Haha those skull lattes! 8y
wen4blu Love the Charley Davidson stories! 8y
DebinHawaii @RealLifeReading Fun! I need to take it to my local coffee shop to see if they can recreate! ☕️☕️☕️ @wen4blu Me too! Book 10 is on (a painfully slow moving) hold at the library! 😬 8y
