Lighthousekeeping | Jeanette Winterson
28 posts | 29 read | 20 to read
Motherless and anchorless, red-headed Silver is taken in by the timeless Mr. Pew, keeper of the Cape Wrath lighthouse, located at the isolated northwestern tip of Scotland. Pew teaches her to man the light but more importantly he tells her ancient tales of longing and rootlessness, of ties that bind and of the slippages that occur throughout every life, not least those of the local inhabitants. One local, Babel Dark, a nineteenth-century clergyman who loved one woman but married another, opens like a map that Silver must follow. Caught in her own particular darknesses, she embarks on an Ulyssean sift through the stories we tell ourselves, stories of love and loss, of passion and regret, stories of unending journeys that move through places and times, and the bleak finality of the shores of betrayal. A story of mutability, of talking birds and stolen books, of Darwin and Stevenson and of the Jekyll and Hyde in all of us, Lighthousekeeping is a way in to the rooms of our own that we secretly inhabit and the lighthouses we strive towards. Jeanette Winterson is one of the most extraordinary and original writers of her generation and this shows her at her lyrical best. From the Hardcover edition.

Guy, guys, GUYS!!! I FINISHED! It only took like 5 months to read the shortest book ever but I finished!

Loved this book Andrea. It was almost haunting. If I would have had the time, this would have absolutely have been a one sitting kind of read.

Don't judge my comments....I spent most of this half asleep 🤣

On it's way to you @BookishTrish 🥰

I can always tell when the seasons begin to change because it never fails to bring me a cold. 🤧

Made myself a little sleepy-time cocktail to hopefully get a good night's rest and some well over due down time.

I‘m not sure Winterson‘s books are for me… they always make me feel like I‘m missing something! I enjoyed most of the story for the story‘s sake but I kept feeling like there was a deeper meaning that I just wasn‘t spotting!

We can only have an itty bitty little party tomorrow being stuck in lockdown but we're going to make the big ONE as special as we can! It's going to be a late night of cake making so I might as well get a bit of a head start on #NutsInMay to keep me awake 😊

#ReadersGoneRogue I'm about halfway through this one so I'm hoping to send it out soon! I promise I didn't forget 🤣

@Andrew65 @BookishTrish @Andrea4

Andrew65 Good luck with the reading and the partying. 3y
ShelleyBooksie Happy first birthday to your little one!!! Hope that you both have a wonderful day!! 3y
Andrea4 Oh don't worry, I started in hard on mine and am really enjoying it but between interviewing for new jobs, consolidating two apartments, apartment hunting, training for my own job, etc etc I got derailed. Hopefully back at it soon and I will have it sent out lickety split. 3y

I probably haven't picked up a book in a week, maybe even two. Has that stopped me from adding to the huger-than-huge TBR? No. But has it stopped me from buying the latest book in a series even though I haven't read half the books in the series? Also no.

Thanks for the extras @andrea4 🥰🥰🥰

Don't want to say much except that I enjoyed this almost as much as her Christmas Days!
I will note you need to be ok with a non-chronological storyline and multiple storylines. If not, might drive you a little crazy. Oh and if you want a "satisfying ending" I'm maybe going to suggest a different book. Because love doesn't end. And this is a love story.?

Andrea4 Oh and did we decide our order? Lol 3y
FantasyChick Shit, I haven't even fully decided on my book 😂😂 3y

I have opinions! Do you?
I couldn't find any even finish The Gap of Time, didn't enjoy Daylight Gate until halfway through, was never as riveted by oranges and written as everyone else and... Victim blaming isn't any more palatable when the victim is yourself; I couldn't really stomach her autobiography. But the ones that I love? I love more than almost any other books.

emtobiasz Ooh, interesting! I love Written on the Body, as it was my introduction to Winterson, and I haven‘t gotten to all the ones you lost here. Otherwise, pretty spot on 👍 5y
annamatopoetry @emtobiasz Written and Oranges were my intro to her too! I was unimpressed until a friend insisted that I read The World and Other Places and I was stuck! I saw that I missed some when I was looking up her bibliography though, so I should get to them. 5y

TheBee @JanuarieTimewalker13 I‘m glad to hear! I hope you are in a good place now 💪🏻 5y
JanuarieTimewalker13 Thank you....Haha...hmmm, let‘s say I was in a better place after and before...I had 7 good years after NHL, then I fainted and fell off a step and broke my hip, super humid, hot day. My advice: stay hydrated and fed. 5y
TheBee @JanuarieTimewalker13 I‘m so sorry to hear!! That must have been traumatic. Sending you all my love! 5y
JanuarieTimewalker13 Awhhh, thank you. Yes, it has cut into my joie de vivre, because I‘m such a walker and physical type. I try to look on the bright side and say at least I didn‘t hit my head. A hip can be replaced (not easily) but a head can‘t. Lol 5y
Suet624 I dip into Hay‘s work often. I didn‘t know there was a DVD either! @JanuarieTimewalker13 5y
JanuarieTimewalker13 @Suet624 if you like her, you‘ll like that DVD. There are a lot of people in it. I have to revisit myself, it‘s been years. 5y

March was sedate on the reading front, since I was out & about so much while in Japan. One night in Tokyo, jetlag kept me wide awake while I reread the tagged book, brought along as a gift for @shawnmooney .
I started to really miss the hours in a day that I normally spend reading, so much so that I started to read in brief bursts on my phone while my travelling companion was taking photos. “Are you reading again?!?” I got busted several times.

emtobiasz Tagged book is one of my favorites ❤️ 5y

June reading wrap-up! Seven is a great month for me. I really liked all of these and I really don‘t have a favorite. It was fun to experience the combo platter of the book and 1959 movie version of On The Beach. Both deliciously sad and somber. #JuneWrapUp

Lighthousekeeping jumps back and forth between the story of Silver, and orphan living with a blind lighthouse keeper in Scotland in modern times, and Babel Dark, who lived in the mid-1800s. Throw in some neat appearances by Charles Darwin and Robert Louis Stevenson and some wonderfully weird and thought-provoking situations and you have an engaging bit of fiction. I really like the way Winterson writes, sometimes poetically and always eloquent.

How neat! Winterson‘s character, clergyman Babel Dark, meets Charles Darwin who consoles him because On the Origin Of Species puts Babel in a funk.

". . .you had seen the turtles hatch in the sand. Not many of them make it out to the sea, and once there, the sharks are waiting for them. Days disappear and get swallowed up much like that, but the ones like these, the ones that make it, swim out and return for the rest of your life." ❤️

For #recommendsday I'm giving you Lighthousekeeping, my favorite by Jeanette Winterson. Her books revel in their unusual, sometimes disjointed narration, but if you can work through that she'll reward you with a beautiful tale on the power of stories to help us through loss and love.
