The Girl in the Green Silk Gown
The Girl in the Green Silk Gown | Seanan McGuire
23 posts | 16 read | 12 to read
The second book in the Ghost Roads series returns to the highways of America, where hitchhiking ghost Rose Marshall continues her battle with her killer--the immortal Bobby Cross. For Rose Marshall, life began when it ended. She has friends, a home, and a purpose in the strange twilight where she spends her afterlife. Sure, she's an urban legend who didn't live to see her eighteenth birthday, but she's had time to adapt, and while things could be better, she's pretty happy with her lot in death. At least until Bobby Cross--the man who killed her in the first place--plays his ultimate card in the hole, resulting in her untimely, unwanted resurrection. Suddenly breathing and worse, suddenly mortal, Rose must find a way to solve the riddle she never wanted to contend with: how does a living dead girl make it back to the ghostroads without actually dying? Her quest will make allies out of enemies and enemies out of allies as she runs from the lands of the living to the lands of the dead, trying to find a way safely home...and safely back to her grave.

I enjoyed this second in the Ghost Lands series, though I preferred the non-linear episodic format of the first. Bobby Cross lays and elaborate trap and Rose must rely on a woman who hates her Prof Moorhead to beg a favor of Persephone.
Rose is particularly whiny in human form, but I really enjoyed the reimagining of the Underworld.

I think it‘s a combination of stress and an audiobook narration that I did not enjoy, but I found this disappointing. I remember really enjoying Sparrow Hill Road, but this one fell flat. It wasn‘t bad, just not anything to write home about. 🤷🏻‍♀️

DGRachel I just realized that this book has frenemies! Rose Marshall and Professor Laura Moorhead count as frenemies, which means that with this book, I am officially done with #Booked2021!!!!!! @Cinfhen @BarbaraTheBibliophage @4thhouseontheleft 3y

I enjoyed this enough to read it all in one sitting. Rose‘s adventure is much more linear than the first one as this installment didn‘t start out as a collection of short fiction and while that gives this one a slightly different feel the world is the same and we see more of how it works. I wish there was another installment out already because I want to be in this world a little while longer. #BuriedAliveChallenge

The rest of my books from the birthday haul at the library!!! The girls wanted me to read lemon meringue pie murder first (pretty sure it's because it's yellow.....). I sincerely thought about it. Then picked The Girl in the Green Silk Gown instead. I miss the characters from the first one.... And I don't think I'm quite ready for another bout with Hannah Swenson and my version of a murder mystery sitcom....

A much more solid story as Rose continues her fight back against Bobby Cross. With even more Greek mythology references!

A little predictable in some twists, but that doesn‘t take away at all from just how much I adore the lore creation.

Got real tired of Rose‘s whining, though. It felt like McGuire couldn‘t really decide if Rose is still 16 or if she‘s matured in the 60 years as a ghost. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

Also! Is this set in the Incyptid universe?

This is my short list for #lmpbcround4 #lmpbc #round4 #groupq. I figured I would see if anyone in my group has a strong opinion about any of them, or have read any of them. @Beatlefan129 @Shadowfat @EliNeedsMoreShelves I'm tagging the one I think I am most interested in starting right now, but they are all on my TBR currently 🙃

Shadowfat I see it's the second in a series, have you read the first one? The one I tagged sounds the most interesting to me but I would read most of the others too. 6y
rjsthumbelina Seanan McGuire is an auto-buy for me, so I own the first. But it also means I didn't research the book, other than reading the blurb, which makes no mention of it being a sequel! And I can't find my copy of the first one right now, which is irritating 😤 so I guess that one's out! Lol. @Shadowfat are there any on there you don't want me to pick? I would be happy to cross one off for you! 6y
Beatlefan129 I think I‘d choose Here Lies Daniel Tate or There There, which is one of @EliNeedsMoreShelves ‘s suggestions (edited) 6y

EliNeedsMoreShelves I think I would be interested in any of them, but I agree with @Shadowfat that Church of Marvels sounds especially interesting. 6y
Shadowfat Whatever you want to pick is fine! I was think about picking Crazy Rich Asians, The Spaceship Nextdoor or something else. I'm going on vacation today so I might pick something up to read for this along the way 😀 6y
Shadowfat Also will we be writing in our books or using a journal? @rjsthumbelina @Beatlefan129 @EliNeedsMoreShelves 6y
rjsthumbelina @Shadowfat I have already read Crazy rich Asians, but the other sounds interesting. I always just let people write in my books. But if you are uncomfortable with that for your book, I would say you can send a journal or whatever you would like us all to write in 😊 6y
Shadowfat @rjsthumbelina I'm fine with writing in the book, I just wanted to check 😎 6y
EliNeedsMoreShelves @Shadowfat @rjsthumbelina I am also just fine with everyone writing in the book. It's fun to have everyone's thoughts right on the page. 6y
Shadowfat I got your book today @rjsthumbelina . I haven't had a chance to start mine yet, I'm way behind. Should I send mine off without reading it or read it quick? @EliNeedsMoreShelves @Beatlefan129 6y
EliNeedsMoreShelves @Shadowfat I'm a bit behind as well - should be mailing by Thursday. I say go ahead & read if you think you can finish by the weekend. 6y
Beatlefan129 I mailed mine off to @EliNeedsMoreShelves, it should have gotten there today 6y

12 hours down, 12 more to go! #24b4monday

I didn‘t know what to use for the #blairwitch prompt, so I went with an All-American ghost/witchy read.

This was my first Seanan McGuire, and it was fantastic! I particularly loved that she created a fast-paced story with a great ending in the middle of a series that leaves you hungry for more. 💚

This was a 4.5 star read for me. I like how it‘s open ended enough for a third book while still be a complete story.

American ghost stories and legends meet Greek mythology. Bobby Cross is up to some serious tricks in this one - he feels he‘s owed Rose because she‘s the one that got away. Rose begs to differ and goes to the ends of the earth to make it right, but not without a cost. Read Sparrow Hill Road and then this book. Pray for a third! (I received an ARC through First to Read).

Y‘all! It might be hard to make out so you‘ll just have to trust me when I say these are some of the best passages in the book. Laura is a book hoarder!

LibrarianRyan The author was on twitter letting off steam after someone posted a digital copy on a free file sharing site. 6y
jpmcwisemorgan @LibrarianRyan Yes, and it was probably an ARC because the book hasn‘t been released yet. It‘s officially out tomorrow and it was posted online about a week before. It likely ruins any chance of making best seller lists now. 6y
LibrarianRyan @jpmcwisemorgan yep. That's what was in her thread. And someone made a comment about being unable to afford books which she didn't take any better. She had some great and very valid points. 6y
jpmcwisemorgan @LibrarianRyan I get not being able to buy books but there are so many options out there, which she mentions. I know people have small libraries - I grew up with one, but I also know that a lot of places do reciprocal cards and lending library types of things. 6y
LibrarianRyan @jpmcwisemorgan yep and most certified libraries have inter library loan. Let me correct that. All certified libraries have ILL. Forgot it's a new rule for LSTA $$ 6y

I‘ve never read a Seanan McGuire book before. Is this one a good place to start? #arc

emtobiasz I think this is a sequel to 6y
Kleonard @emtobiasz —Thank you! Now I know. Thank you so much. 6y
WeeWeegieBookworm It's the sequel to Sparrow Hill Road and set in the same universe as Discount Armageddon. Both great books 😁 enjoy 6y
Kleonard Thank you for clarifying! I need to also to pick up some of her Mira Grant books. 6y

(From an early review copy.) Big recommend for fantasy fans. Seanan McGuire returns to the ghostroads of America in a novel-length story of Rose Marshall, the Phantom Prom Date. It's a well-plotted return to her Sparrow Hill Road territory. Rose, the dead girl, has a problem. Her enemy has brought her back to life and now she has to figure out how to return to her unlife and get back to her friends and allies before meeting a worse second death.

In 1952, Rose Marshall set out for her prom and instead became an urban legend, known to most as the Girl in the Green Silk Gown or the Phantom Prom Date. 60 years later, she's still sweet 16 and hitchhiking her way across America, helping travelers get to their destination unharmed or holding their hand to guide them in to the twilight.
A thrilling ghost story of urban legend, greek mythology, and paranormal fantasy.

kyraleseberg Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for providing an ARC in exchange for my honest review. 6y
