The Juniper Gin Joint

When life gives you lemons, make gin and tonic! It's been a tough year for empty-nester Jen in her seaside Devon town; her kids have left for pastures new and her husband's left for another woman. Home alone with her eccentric home-brewing father and a Jack Russell, she is just getting her life back on track when her job at the local museum is threatened by her first love and nemesis, Councillor David Barton, who intends to sell the beautiful old building to a pub chain. But help is at hand from her colleagues: Jackie, a former Greenham Common warrior; Tish, a flamboyant historian; and Carol, mega-flirt. Plus newcomer and former campaigner, Tom. Who happens to be a widower. And quite sexy. And also the owner of a Jack Russell. The key to saving the day and putting the town back on the tourist map could lie just within reach - when reaching for a cold gin and tonic, that is. Mother's Ruin to some, gin is the making of Jen when she comes together with her friends and family to save the museum and open an artisan distillery in the basement. With its debauched local history of smuggling, can gin be the town's saviour and bring love back into Jen's life?

Thank you so much @RachelO for the lovely gift!! And no, I didn‘t get over excited and rip it open as soon as it arrived like an impatient 5yr old. Then felt immediately guilty, tried to get it back in the wrapping to put under the tree for Christmas!!! 😳🙈🤭 #jbuk

rockpools 😂😂😂 You can open it and declare it a belated birthday present if it helps! Glad it reached you. x 5y
Caroline2 @RachelO 😆 Thank you! It sounds like such a lovely read! Thank you very much! 😘 5y

A light fun read! Jen's daughter's at uni, her son's in Canada, her Dad's moved in & her husband's run off. Plus the museum is being shut down, taking her beloved job with it.

With the help of her eccentric family, old friends & new (the silver 🦊!) they set about saving the museum. This was warm, funny, characterful & not-too-mushy - & the end was pure Richard Curtis-style cheese. Plus there's gin, puppies & local landmarks. What's not to love?

rockpools Finished this one just in time to hop on the ferry to Roscoff, where I'm watching the world go by with a G&T. Better get some sleep before I get to France - my next book appears to be narrated by a bottle of wine! (Must be the heat!) #backpackeurope

This really is a perfect #beachread, so could I log it for #Booked2018 please? @cinfhen @barbarathebibliophage @4thhouseontheleft

alisiakae Yes!! It is really up for participant discretion for how a book fits a prompt! It sounds like it would be a great #beachread! (edited) 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Yes! It‘s up to you, so if you think it fits then it does. 👏🏻👏🏻 6y

After a week of teaching paddleboard yoga (yes, that really is a thing 🏄🏽 . As is goat pilates, but that's another story 🐐 🤷🏻‍♀️) on the South Devon coast, camping in the van at night, we're now heading for the ferry to France, where I'll be switching from Juniper Gin to Blackberry Wine, and my #BackpackEurope trip will start in earnest.

I'm really enjoying this beach read of a book, and should be finished just about as we reach the ferry.

rockpools @BookwormM Sorry - having problems tagging people for some reason. 6y
tpixie Fun!!! 6y
VioletBramble I love that VW bus. My family had a real one when I was little. My parents took all the back seats out and we roamed about the back freely during road trips. I don't think that was illegal in the 60s but it sure would be today. 6y

Cinfhen Soooo fun 😍 6y
debthmpsn Sounds like a fabulous adventure (btw, totally get paddle board yoga but goat Pilates boggles the mind) 6y
Books88 I want to try paddle board yoga so bad!! 6y
rockpools @debthmpsn A video. https://www.fwi.co.uk/farm-life/goat-pilates-put-smiles-on-faces-of-farmer-and-f... . You're welcome. As I said before, 🤷🏻‍♀️. 6y
rockpools @AJBowers 🙃Me too! 6y
rockpools @VioletBramble Love this! My cousins' family had a Morris Minor. When the twins were born, there wasn't room for all of us in the back seat, so me & my oldest cousin would sit behind the back seat in the 'boot' for travelling. Health & Safety? Naaa! 6y

Just loading up the van for the start of my #backpackeurope trip. Had an offer I can't refuse - a lift in this spectacular vehicle & ferry fare paid over to Brittany (France) in exchange for a few days work at this end. As the weather's still amazing here (note hat & sunblock) seems too good to a chance to miss. Fingers crossed the van holds together long enough to get us down to Plymouth. And the hand-drawn map *may* get upgraded at some point...

JenP Good one! I love it 6y
BookwormM Amazing camper van love it 💕💕 6y

This was a lovely fun read. I say perfect for summer though it's mostly set in winter. The plot is good and develops nicely. I enjoyed the story especially the puppies. The ending was exactly what I wanted though I did cringe a little at the school scene
Jennifer is a likeable and relatable character. All the others compliment the story perfectly, especially her dad who was so funny. My favourite has to be Bob though, I loved him.

Yesterday's #bookmail, courtesy of #readersfirst 😁

A rom-com set in a Devon museum (which for some reason I was convinced was in Dawlish, but is actually in 'Dingleton'). With gin.

Rude not to!

LeahBergen This sounds like a fun one! And now I can say I‘ve seen Dawlish now. 😉 6y
rockpools @LeahBergen We've moved to the town-next-door, which makes me Very Happy! At some point, I'll get you a photo of the Warren 😘 6y
TrishB Ahhh.... I wish I was there now 😁 6y
