Northanger Abbey Jane Austen
Northanger Abbey Jane Austen | Jane Austen
15 posts | 15 read | 2 reading | 1 to read
Northanger Abbey tells the story of a young girl, Catherine Morland who leaves her sheltered, rural home to enter the busy, sophisticated world of Bath in the late 1790s. Austen observes with insight and humour the interaction between Catherine and the various characters whom she meets there, and tracks her growing understanding of the world about her. In this, her first full-length novel, Austen also fixes her sharp, ironic gaze on other kinds of contemporary novel, especially the Gothic school made famous by Ann Radcliffe. Catherine's reading becomes intertwined with her social and romantic adventures, adding to the uncertainties and embarrassments she must undergo before finding happiness.

Isabella summons Cath right away and drops the news that she and James are engaged! Catherine is delighted and thinks that Isabella must be in love *fr fr* 'cuz let's face it, James is not handsome. John Thorpe suddenly corners Catherine in the parlor and starts weirdly spouting off about marriage. She is totally uncomfortable (relatable) and tries like hell to leave. She manages to escape but still never cottons on to his meaning. Come on, girl!

Crinoline_Laphroaig She's so clueless. 🤦🏻‍♀️ 2d

Man, I LOVE today's chapter. Just some cool people (and Catherine) enjoying the gorgeous countryside and geeking out about books. Henry is delightfully silly and teasing and when he finds himself starting to mansplain a bit about drawing, he holds back and allows for some blessed silence. Catherine gets in a great bit about history books being a total sausage-fest, putting me in mind of a classic Flight of the Conchords number (link in comments).

AmyG I love Flight of the Conchords! 3d

Isabella, James, and John the Jagoff try desperately to get Catherine to cancel her walk with the Tilneys but girl sticks to her guns and won't fold. John goes behind her back like an absolute twatopotamus and *shows up at the Tilneys house* to cancel, but C hauls ass over there herself to set the record straight. The General sees Cath out with a compliment to her style of walk, which immediately gets our girl STRUTTING back to Pulteney Street. 🤣

Catherine busts ass to the Tilney's to apologize for skipping out on their date but is told Ms. Tilney is not in...only to see her walk straight out the front door two minutes later. DAMN, that's a cold shoulder! At the theatre, she can't apologize to Henry enough for the mishap and he sets her mind at ease and even secures a new date to hang. Catherine is relieved but she still can't shake John Thorpe, and like all of us, she's sick of his shit.

Me trying the hot spring waters at the Roman Baths. The smell was a little off-putting but the water had no taste. I was surprised and tend to think it was treated or “watered down.” @Dilara

The Roman baths were an important part of the character Catherine‘s time in Bath.

There is a lot more to see here than when husband & I came here 25+ years ago.

Dilara Did you have a glass of that disgusting-tasting water when you were there? 😂 10mo
Laughterhp Oh I‘ll be in Bath at the end of August! 10mo

I returned today to Sydney Place to take a photo of the “apartments” where Jane Austen‘s residence was. It was way way way down there. We walked it yesterday but today was pretty packed so I just took a photo of this view.

Tamra That was a double take with the cars parked like that! 👀👀 10mo

Catherine is an innocent in a world of complexity. An unsuspecting heroine, she is thrown into friendships and relationships that aren‘t always what they seem. She embarks on a long visit to Bath with neighbors, the Allens, where she meets the Thorpes and the Tilneys. She and Isabella Thorpe become best of friends and Catherine has her eye on Henry Tilney. Siblings throw in complicated twists. Then Henry‘s sister invites Catherine to spend ⬇️

Texreader time with the Tilneys at their home at Northanger Abbey, and she jumps at the chance, having fallen for Henry. Then within a few weeks, she is forced out of their home in a mad and rude rush by the Tilney patriarch. But why? This book defies genres and I never quite knew where it was going. But the ending was so satisfying. I‘m glad I stuck with it. #authoramonth @Soubhiville 1y

So I‘ve decided to start this one since it was only 29 cents and it‘s still January for #authoramonth @Soubhiville

Wondering how much I‘ll get confused reading it while also reading Sense and Sensibility

Scochrane26 They‘re different plots but names of minor characters may confuse you. 1y

I got the last one to complete my Chiltern Classics Jane Austen collection. I don't usually collect hardcovers, but these were too beautiful to resist. They even have gold or silver edges and attached ribbon bookmarks too. I might have to get The Brontë Sisters ones next.

I enjoyed Northanger Abbey quite a bit! I went back and forth between the audiobook version and my paperback copy. I could relate to Catherine‘s wild imagination and her obsession with novels, and I found Henry Tilney to be oh so charming. This is my second Austen read and I am loving her writing!

One of Austen‘s earlier works although not published until after her death, Northanger Abbey is a charming rom-com and coming of age novel. Catherine Morland is 17 and visiting Bath for the season. There she meets the Thorpes and Tilneys, who both seek her friendship but whose motives in doing so are quite different. Fake friends have been a thing forever! https://cannonballread.com/2021/07/northanger-abbey-elcicco/
