Women of the Dunes
Women of the Dunes: A Novel | Sarah Maine
24 posts | 20 read | 76 to read
A beautifully told and intriguing mystery about two generations of Scottish women united by blood, an obsession with the past, and a long-hidden body, from the author of The House Between Tides. Libby Snow has always felt the pull of Ullaness, a headland on Scotlands sea-lashed western coast where a legend has taken root. At its center is Ulla, an eighth-century Norsewoman whose uncertain fate was entangled with two warring brothers and a man who sought to save her. Libby first heard the stories from her grandmother, who had learned it from her own forebear, Ellen, a maid at Sturrock House. The Sturrocks have owned the land where Ulla dwelled for generations, and now Libby, an archaeologist, has their permission to excavate a mysterious mound, which she hopes will cast light on the legends truth. But before she can begin, storms reveal the unexpected: the century-old bones of an unidentified man. The discovery triggers Libbys memories of family stories about Ellen, of her strange obsession with Ulla, and of her violent past at Sturrock House. As Libby digs deeper, she unravels a recurring story of love, tragedy, and threads that bind the past to the present. And as she learns more of Rodri Sturrock, the landowners brother, she realizes these forces are still at work, and that she has her own role to play in Ullas dark legend.

Women of the Dunes tells the intertwined stories of 3 women across eras on the west coast of Scotland. Much of the book is centered around current day Libby, who has traveled to the area to understand her family‘s past. Well-told book and I loved the audio reader‘s Scottish burr. It made the book that much better.

Good solid story. The audio narrator wasn't very good but I still enjoyed this. If you enjoy Susanna Kearsley or Posie Graeme-Evans this is a good rec.

Just finished- so far leaning positive in reflections of this book. It was a nice read, interesting to say the least. I would recommend it to historical fiction fans.

4 ⭐ a Scottish tale of a holy man and a pagan woman. Weaves between the past and the present. Libby goes to Ulleness for a dig, but also because her grandmothers past is linked to this land. She and Rhodri begins to unwind the legends and find what links them. A good story

This mystery set in Scotland was the choice for my local library's bookclub this month. I'm trying to read it this weekend, since bookclub meets on Wednesday, but I'm having a hard time getting into it. 😕

Anyone read this one? Does it get better? I'm only 80 pages in so far and the story is moving a bit too slow for my tastes.

Crazeedi Oooh this looks really good! I love the setting! 5y
Addison_Reads @Crazeedi After my bookclub Wednesday, I'd be happy to pass it on to you. ☺ 5y
Crazeedi @Addison_Reads that is very kind of you! I'd love that!🤩💞 5y
Addison_Reads @Crazeedi I'm more than happy to send it on for someone else to enjoy. If you would just send me your address to caddison97@gmail.com I'll ship it out on Thursday. 😁 5y

An atmospheric and suspenseful Gothic Romance set is Scotland surrounding multiple generations of people who lived there. Anyone who‘s a fan of Barbara Michals‘ gothic romances would love this book. #romantsy

I read this for my #beachread for the #booked2018 challenge. I was skeptical about it because I‘m always skeptical about books involving archaeology, but I quite enjoyed it. There‘s a little mystery, a little romance, a little historical fiction...in other words the perfect beach read for me!

Ugh, guys I think I‘m gonna bail. Someone else on Litsy said this is very forgettable and they are totally right. I hate bailing, but why bother when there are so many other good things to read?

And the book promptly fell off the deck from its precarious position and into the mud after this was taken. 🤦🏻‍♀️ I‘m the first one to check it it at the library so I can‘t blame it on anyone either!

About 100 pages in and it‘s starting to pick up a little. Hopefully, it continues!

Not a bad read overall. Somewhat predictable and a little forgettable. 🤷

Scotland, back and forth in time, murders, illegitimate children, authentic characters, and an old estate all greet us in WOMEN OF THE DUNES.

Any reader who enjoys castles, secrets, looking for clues in old documents, and re-tracing the steps of characters that lived long ago will want to read WOMEN OF THE DUNES.

And that cover...love it!!

FULL REVIEW ON JULY 20.

Do you LOVE that cover!! :)

The two stories - present and past - connected, came full circle, and brilliantly meshed together as mirrored stories.

Any reader who enjoys castles, secrets, looking for clues in old documents, and re-tracing the steps of characters that lived long ago will want to read WOMEN OF THE DUNES.

WOMEN OF THE DUNES is going to be a favorite. 5/5
