Good Riddance | Elinor Lipman

In a delightful new romantic comedy from Elinor Lipman, one womans trash becomes another womans treasure, with deliriously entertaining results. Daphne Maritch doesn't quite know what to make of the heavily annotated high school yearbook she inherits from her mother, who held this relic dear. Too dear. The late June Winter Maritch was the teacher to whom the class of '69 had dedicated its yearbook, and in turn she went on to attend every reunion, scribbling notes and observations after each onenot always charitablyand noting who overstepped boundaries of many kinds. In a fit of decluttering (the yearbook did not, Daphne concluded, "spark joy"), she discards it when she moves to a small New York City apartment. But when it's found in the recycling bin by a busybody neighbor/documentary filmmaker, the yearbook's mysteriesnot to mention her own family'stake on a whole new urgency, and Daphne finds herself entangled in a series of events both poignant and absurd. Good Riddance is a pitch-perfect, whip-smart new novel from an "enchanting, infinitely witty yet serious, exceptionally intelligent, wholly original, and Austen-like stylist" (Washington Post).

Panpan

Oof. This is my first pan on here, but I did not enjoy this book. It had a good premise: Daphne throws out her deceased mom‘s yearbook. A neighbor picks it up, and starts investigating all the notations in it. Secrets come out and love interests appear. But...I did not think this was well written; it was all over the place with storyline. The only character I liked was her dad. I‘m glad it‘s over.

I listened to this novel about all that ensues after a woman recycles her deceased mother's yearbook to have the neighbor pick it out of the trash. It was enjoyable enough to pay half-hearted attention to. It seemed like it the story line was a little jumpy and all over the place. It was okay.

Another impulse from the new books section of the library, and I zoomed through it during the readathon. The narrator recycles a yearbook left to her by her mother and hijinks ensue. I actually felt like the most interesting character lived down the hallway....

Another just ok library find. Lipman tried so hard to pick up many topics but just couldn‘t thread them together. At then end I guess she was like okay almost 300 pages...that‘s enough for a book.

A slower day for reading, but I wasn‘t feeling too inspired. 4 hours and change added to my #24b4monday time. Two books and a novella, all of which were just so-so. Onwards to Day 3!

#CurrentlyListening — I was hooked by the premise of the discarded annotated yearbook picked up by a nosy, would-be documentarian hoping to exploit it.

This is the first time I've read Lipman since 2004 (I can't say I remember that book). This was a suitably entertaining light read. I disliked the characters I was supposed to, and liked the characters I was supposed to overall. Woman inherits annotated yearbook from her teacher mom, learns things about her mom, deals with nasty person who wants to exploit the dirty laundry, and strengthens (already close and loving) relationship with her dad.

Bummer. I feel shorted on the story that caught my attention from the cover jacket. The premise was there but then got lost in the scramble of intellectual freedom. I was gonna be super pissed if the book ended and nobody mentioned that what she learned about her mom shouldn't overshadow the good memories she had. So it redeemed itself a smidge there but overall I would have rather read a story about the 68 year old father than as a sub character.

I won both of these from Goodreads this month. So exciting! I went for years without winning one and now that I am entering these giveaways regularly, they‘re starting to come in. I have two more coming! Yay! #goodreadsgiveaways

I guess I‘m kicking 2019 off with a bit of a #RomCom binge! This is my first experience with this author- and this rather quirky and fun story revolving around an annotated 1968 yearbook is fast-paced, lighthearted and genuinely fun!! Any Littens have recommendations on which Lipman book I should start tracking down??

BookNAround I love Lipman. I don‘t think you can go wrong with any of her books. 6y

I squeezed in one last book for 2018. After entertaining the in-laws for the past 5 days, I spent today reading on the couch between cat naps. This was a fun romp of a book, another e-galley from #netgalley. It was funny to me since I grew up in small-town New Hampshire and found the characters rather relatable.

A yearbook, a documentarian, a Riverdale actor, a politician, and a recent divorcée create a fun, entertaining read.
