The Sober Diaries
The Sober Diaries: How one woman stopped drinking and started living | Clare Pooley
30 posts | 12 read | 12 to read
Like many women, Clare Pooley found the juggle of a stressful career and family life a struggle so she left her successful role as a Managing Partner in one of the world's biggest advertising agencies to look after her family. She knew the change wouldn't be easy but she never expected to find herself an overweight, depressed, middle-aged mother of three who was drinking more than a bottle of wine a day, and spending her evenings Googling 'Am I an alcoholic?' This book is the bravely honest story of a year in Clare's life. A year that started with her quitting booze and then being given the devastating diagnosis of breast cancer. By the end of the year she is booze-free and cancer-free, she no longer has a wine belly, is two stone lighter and with a life that is so much richer, healthier and more rewarding than ever before. She has a happier family and a more positive outlook. Sober Diaries is an upbeat, funny and positive look at how to live life to the full. Interwoven within Clare's own very personal and brilliantly comic story is research and advice as she discovers the answers to questions like: How do I know if I'm drinking too much? How will I cope at parties? What do I say to friends and family? How do I cope with cravings? If I stop drinking will I lose weight? What if my partner still drinks? And many more.

1. It depends on the type of illness. I love ice cream sandwiches when I have a sore throat. Tea makes me feel better about almost everything.
2. It was 2017 and it was the Atlantic ocean from Fire Island, NY
3. I don't have a goal specifically for January but I think I'll meet my goal for the year. I'm super busy this weekend so I cant participate in the 24B4Monday.

⭐️ - Read this one for book club, not my thing at all. I‘m not a fan of memoirs, especially the mummy variety. The author seemed shocked that she had a problem and had assumed her behaviour was normal; blamed society and culture. I congratulate her on overcoming her alcoholism, however her smug assumption that she has found the answer that the rest of us must be seeking is irritating. And her constant vanity and humble-brags were nauseating.

BookwormM All my diaries are sober diaries 🤣🤣glass of bubbly for birthday and Xmas and that is my yearly drinking. 5y

First post. Trying to figure this site out. My teen is at Booknet Fest and, as chaperone, I suppose I‘ll just relax all weekend and read. Hard to relax when this book makes you laugh, snort, and sniffle :)

saresmoore Nice reading view! 5y

BookieBiker @Bklover @saresmoore @BookwormAHN Thank you! Trying to get the feel of it but so far I‘m loving it!!!! I‘ve been wanting more interaction- I think I found my place! Tips on getting more engaged or sucked in are encouraged! 5y
saresmoore It‘s fun to join in on #friyayintro posts from @howjessreads and often folks will host buddy reads, readathons, and reading challenges. I think @LitsyHappenings might still be a good launching point for those sorts of things. 5y
Bklover Here are a couple of tips: Follow @RaimeyGallant - she has a link in her bio to some Litsy tips and how-tos. If you‘d like to see some how-to videos follow @Chelleo - she has a link to videos in her bio. Also, try to follow a lot of people- the suggested followers is a good place to start. There are so many fun things about Litsy. Also follow @LitsyHappenings for things to do and join in on. ❤️ 5y
BookieBiker @saresmoore @Bklover Thank you both! I followed and am looking through your people / pages / how-tos. Awesome! Ahhh I was so hoping for an “interactive Goodreads”! Found Litsy via some ladies from a Stoic FB group. So grateful. Enjoy your days and thank you- your posts were immensely helpful! 5y
