"NEW YORK TIMES"BESTSELLER NAMED ONE OF THE TEN BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY "USA TODAY "Elizabeth Berg has written a lush historical novel based on the sensuous Parisian life of the nineteenth-century writer George Sand which is perfect for readers of Nancy Horan and Elizabeth Gilbert. At the beginning of this powerful novel, we meet Aurore Dupin as she is leaving her estranged husband, a loveless marriage, and her family s estate in the French countryside to start a new life in Paris. There, she gives herself a new name George Sand and pursues her dream of becoming a writer, embracing an unconventional and even scandalous lifestyle. Paris in the nineteenth century comes vividly alive, illuminated by the story of the loves, passions, and fierce struggles of a woman who defied the confines of society. Sand s many lovers and friends include Frederic Chopin, Gustave Flaubert, Franz Liszt, Eugene Delacroix, Victor Hugo, Marie Dorval, and Alfred de Musset. As Sand welcomes fame and friendship, she fights to overcome heartbreak and prejudice, failure and loss. Though considered the most gifted genius of her time, she works to reconcile the pain of her childhood, of disturbing relationships with her mother and daughter, and of her intimacies with women and men. Will the life she longs for always be just out of reach a dream? Brilliantly written in luminous prose, and with remarkable insights into the heart and mind of a literary force, "The Dream Lover" tells the unforgettable story of a courageous, irresistible woman. Praise for "The Dream Lover" Exquisitely captivating . . . Sand s story is so timely and modern in an era when gender and sexual roles are upended daily. "USA Today" Fantastic . . . a provocative and dazzling portrait . . . Berg tells a terrific story, while simultaneously exploring sexuality, art, and the difficult personal choices women artists in particular made then and now in order to succeed. . . . The book, imagistic and perfectly paced, full of dialogue that clips along, is a reader s dream. "The Boston Globe" Absorbing . . . an armchair traveler s delight . . . Berg rolls out the wonders of nineteenth-century Paris in cinematic bursts that capture its light, its street life, its people and sounds. . . . The result is an illuminating portrait of a magnificent woman whose story is enriched by the delicate brush strokes of Berg s colorful imagination. "Chicago Tribune""" There is authority and confidence in the storytelling that makes the pages fly. "The New York Times" Berg weaves an enchanting novel about the real life of George Sand. "Us Weekly" Lavishly described . . . Berg uses her own skill as a writer to graphically present the reader with a clear picture of a brilliant, yet flawed woman. Fredericksburg "Free Lance Star" [A] beautiful, imaginative re-creation . . . Berg s years-long immersion in the writings of and about Sand has resulted in a remarkable channeling of Sand s voice. "Library Journal "(starred review) Berg offers vivid, sensual detail and a sensitive portrayal of the yearning and vulnerability behind Sand s bold persona. "Publishers Weekly" A thoroughly pleasant escape . . . [Sand is] intoxicating, beautiful, gifted, desirous, unconventional and heartbroken. "Kirkus Reviews" "From the Hardcover edition.""

Sometimes I wonder when you sleep
Are you ever dreaming of me?
Sometimes when I look into your eyes
I pretend you're mine, all the damn time
'Cause I like you🎶

Aurore Dupin leaves her estranged husband, a loveless marriage, and her family‘s estate in the French countryside to start a new life in Paris. She has a dream of becoming a writer.

The dialogue constructed for Aurore Dupin Dudevant, aka, George Sand, seems connected to her views/personal philosophy, and, thus strikes me as authentic. I can “hear” GS saying the words as I read so this adds credibility to the portrayal, in my opinion. The author has done significant research so as to provide an astute/discerning portrait of GS.

Insightful portrayal of Aurore Dupin Dudevant, aka George Sand. The author is well-versed regarding GS‘s sentiments about writing/life. Like most, GS developed her views based on experiences. Unlike many, she followed-through to initiate personal change. Having some financial resources facilitated her ability to live per her moral compass. I don‘t embrace all aspects of her philosophy, but I admire her commitment to gender equality.

The Dream Lover: A Novel | Elizabeth Berg
Mehso-so

Berg writes in first person, alternating between Sand's childhood, and almost present day (the time she decides to leave her husband for a life in Paris). The alternating between past and present was effective, it was confusing at times and I wasn't sure the purpose. Berg could have easily done the story in two separate parts. What was interesting was her search for love and acceptance, with remarkable insights into her heart and brilliant mind.

Aurore Dupin (1804-1876) better known as George Sand was a French novelist who lived a scandalous life. She wore men's clothes, smoked in public and had numerous affairs both during her marriage and after, including one with Frederic Chopin. Ultimately she fought for her right to be treated as an equal to a man. #feminist
Although I enjoyed learning about her life, this book dragged. Too much detail and she came across as too self centered.

MemoirsForMe Thx for your insights. I have enjoyed many other Berg. books. Thinking of rereading 7y
kspenmoll I bailed on this. Her life is fascinating; could not get into this book though. ☹️ 7y

#bailed #notengaged
Returned Dream Lover to the Library when due. I did not get very far; kept putting it aside. Just could not get into it. Not sure why; just did not work for me. So I let it go.

DivineDiana I should wrap it up this weekend on audio. It has been a struggle but I'm almost there! However, I am interested in reading George Sand now! (edited) 8y
kspenmoll @DivineDiana That's great! I just could not muster up the energy to slog through- that's what it felt like! Reading her works probably would be fascinating- I only got as far as 2nd home in Paris, still lover # 1, & tough times with her kids when back home, etc. 8y
DivineDiana @kspenmoll So many lovers to go! 😉 8y

Bailedbailed

I could spend another week and a half trying to slog through this book or I could move on. I've chosen to move on and I'm 💯% sure I've made the right decision.

DivineDiana I am listening to the audio and enjoying it. Planning on adding some George Sand to my TBR. 8y
LitHousewife @DivineDiana I very well have made a mistake with this in print. It took me 11 days to read 122 pages. Not good. 8y

I adore the ARC cover copy of this book, which is why I don't own the real thing. Isn't it gorgeous?? 😍 This is a really interesting book about a woman I had heard about, but never knew much about. The story is about a woman ahead of her time (Aurore Dupin who becomes George Sand), very romantic at times, a little slow, but enjoyable if you like long historical based fiction.

thegirlwiththelibrarybag It's gorgeous! Shame they didn't keep it ☺️ 8y

"What of me and my passions and personas, my great loves and failures of love, my writing, my politics? What of the clanging opinions, the endless queries as to the whys and wherefores of how I chose to conduct myself? In the end there is but one answer to every question...I was I."

Sydsavvy I really enjoyed this book! 8y
