Everything goes according to procedure when a patient, Isaac, is released from a high-security mental health ward. But when the staff realize that he was connected to a series of unexplained episodes of tragic self-harm amongst the wards patients and that he was released in error, they call on Detective Jack Caffery to investigate and to track Isaac down before he can kill again.

I think this qualifies as a #toycover?? It‘s creepy as %* for sure, so I wouldn‘t be playing with it if I were a kid. These books are 10/10 creepy. Hate that Mo Hayder passed away - she was a favorite of mine. @Eggs @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks #NewYearNewBooks

So sad that many good authors have passed away lately. Rest In Peace, Mo Hayder, had a great time reading your books together with @Andrew65 and @EadieB

EadieB @Tove_Reads Sorry to hear that! Look she was a “wild child” and had some different jobs: She left school and home for London shortly before her 16th birthday. After (in her own words) "a wild child phase" and a brief marriage she emigrated at 25 to Japan. She was an English teacher as a foreign language in Tokyo. She was also a waitress at a nightclub and an amateur filmmaker. Hayder was educated at The American University and Bath Spa University. (edited) 3y
andrew61 I saw this news on twitter. Really sad as she was such a talent, her books were so creepy but great storytelling. Thanks for posting. 3y
Andrew65 Oh no! Hadn‘t heard that. 😢 Really enjoyed these books, sad there will be no more. As you say too many recently. 3y

Book mail! 🤩 not the prettiest of covers but I‘ve heard good things.

Mo Hayder‘s Poppet has been on my shelf for a while now it wasn‘t until I picked it up that I realised it was book number 5 of the Jack Caffery Thrillers.
I managed to find the first two online which came today so looking forward to starting these soon and eventually getting around to poppet

I really like stories set in mental institutions, and this one spent a lot of time there. It felt like there was a lot of buildup, until we are finally introduced to Isaac, the patient who creates the poppets, the dolls representing the people in his life. There is some comparison to voodoo dolls, but I don't really think that is their purpose here.

The story is a bit of a slow build, but I was never bored. I enjoyed every minute of reading this.

BookDragonNotWorm I really enjoyed that one! Have you read any of her others? 4y
IamIamIam Great review!! I stacked this! 4y
ReadingOver50 @BookDragonNotWorm I‘ve read most of her books, but still a couple I need to read. 4y

I‘m not sure what to make of this book in the Jack Caffery Series. It was very different to other books in the series, and not as good as the last one. However I did enjoy the characters and their interaction during the book. I was going to review it as a so-so but it rescued itself at the very end with how the book ended and the twist involved. However, hopefully the next book in the series will return to the higher quality of the last book.

Cathythoughts Sounds a good series. That cover is 🤭😥😱 5y
Andrew65 @Cathythoughts It is but the book didn‘t live up to the cover, wasn‘t very psychological or scary at all. Overall have enjoyed the series. (edited) 5y
EadieB Nice review! I didn‘t find it scary either! 5y

Jack Caffery must find a dangerous mental patient on the loose before he can kill again. Set in a high-security mental hospital the patients are afraid of a spirit called The Maude.
Caffery discovers former patient Isaac Handel is beyond anyone's imagining. Slow start but picks up towards the end. Short chapters make for fast-pace. Not my favorite Hayder book but still a good one. Recommend this book for those who enjoy mystery/thrillers. #poppet

Andrew65 That was quick! 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 Was listening to this all day. Going to bed now as there is a power outage but not storm related. Must be an accident. 5y

So far (halfway through) a bit different from the others in the series. #buddyread @Andrew65 @EadieB

TheEllieMo Ooh, creepy cover! 5y
Andrew65 About at the same point. Very different so far, and not enjoying it as much as the last one. (edited) 5y
Tove_Reads @andrew65 A lot of undercurrents going on, but nothing has really happened. That‘s too far into a book of waiting for something to actually start. 5y

Andrew65 @Tove_Reads My thoughts exactly. 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Not good news! I have the audio and book but haven‘t started yet! 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB I‘m doing the audiobook route too. Easy listening and moves through quickly. (edited) 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 Finishing some reviews and finishing up an audio of When The Crawdags Sing and then will start Poppet audio. 5y
Reviewsbylola That cover 😱 5y
Tove_Reads @andrew65 @eadieb Not a big fan of this one. 😕 5y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads I‘m about 80% through. It just to seems to meander through, not really like any Detective book I‘ve read before. Like you not a great fan of it either. And enough with the Flea storyline! @EadieB 5y
Tove_Reads @andrew65 Felt like it never really went anywhere. Did not feel it was terrifying, surprising, mysterious or anything else I would expect from this book 🤷🏼‍♀️ 5y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads I‘d agree with all of those. 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 I haven‘t started yet and I‘m not sure I want to waste my time! @Tove_Reads 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB it‘s not a bad book, but feel at times it is meandering. I‘m enjoying listening to it but possibly just missing tension and drama. Certainly not the gritty you come to expect from her or the book cover suggests. 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 I'll give it a try! 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB Will be interested to see what you think. At current time would possibly give it 3.5 Stars. Ending could dictate the final score. Last one got 4.5. 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 Ok I'll read it today. 5y
Tove_Reads @andrew65 @eadieb 3 stars, definitely can‘t give it more. 5y
Tove_Reads @andrew65 The lack of real suspense seems so unreal in this context. 5y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads I‘d agree and strange given her other books. 5y

Starting Poppet, Book 6 in the Jack Caffery Series, which I am doing as an audiobook. @EadieB @Tove_Reads
I‘m hoping it keeps up the standard of the last book in the series.

This was the first Jack Caffery book I read back in 2014. I've gone back to read them in order now, and this one is still just as creepy. I didn't like it as much as the previous installments, especially since Gone was so good. I think there was a bit too much focus on the subject of the mystery (AJ) and not quite enough of Jack and Flea. Still a great thriller, though.

Mehso-so

I like mo hayders writing, the characters in this series and the progression of their story. The plotting and story here was very well done but i struggled with the use of mental illness as a plot device in this book. The ending seemed to conveniently resolve that use but the label of schizophrenia is complicated and its automatic association with violence is ill informed and perpetuates a label . I put the book down feeling really cross.

EadieB Haven‘t read any of Mo‘s books but I do own some. 6y

"Fighting is for those who have something to gain."

+I never expect to like or love the author of this book. I never imagine that I'll end up recommending this book to fellow readers who loves mystery or suspense.

+It never crosses my mind that the REAL DEAL BITCH was Melanie. Damn. Isaac is insanely clever. Poor Aj, thank's to Penny. :)

+Like I said, Highly recommended to those who loves mystery, suspense, or crime investigations.

Finished just under the wire! This book was a great mystery, which I did not figure out until the very end. It's also very creepy and scary and definitely the epitome of psychological thriller. There will be fluffy romance in my future as well as comedic sitcoms later tonight.

RadicalReader @Avidreader6 sounds like a phenomenal book can't wait to check it out 7y

I tore through a couple of the Jack Caffrey series while I was home with a bug, but I've lost steam in the past week. Less to do with the books, I think, than a general inability to concentrate. But this is nice: post drumline practice, waiting on some friends with a book and blackberry cider.
