This book reminds me of many other books and still manages to be unique, interesting, and fun! I really enjoyed it!

I'll be honest there was a large portion of this book that I was seriously questioning what I was even listening to and not just because I was trying to get used to driving a manual transmission car again. The world is so unique and while there is a lot of bodily fluids and borderline body horror I was fascinated and wanted to know more. Very hero's journey with an amnesia trope in a hard to wrap your head around environment. Glad I stuck with it.

(2017) I liked this one a lot: part Star Wars, part Game of Thrones, part heist movie, with a David Cronenbergish body-horror aesthetic, I don't think I've ever read anything quite like it. I didn't quite buy the resolution, though, and would be very interested in a sequel.

This was an imaginative, gritty and wonderfully weird sci-fi that was full of cool ideas, but I can‘t say I enjoyed it. I loved the all-female world, the unreliable narrators, the quest through different levels… but the biotech was all a bit too icky for me. The blood and sclera and teeth and afterbirth 🤢 I spent a lot of time grossed out. Cool concept, but too visceral for me! #bookspinbingo @TheAromaofBooks

#TBRPile 📚 “There is nothing I fear more than someone without memory. A person without memory is free to do anything she likes.”

When the whole book passes the Bechdel test 💕 Lesbians in space and really well-written, involved characters. Sometimes the prose lapsed into super cliche 'quotable' lines, but for the most part it was incredible.

I ended up really enjoying this book but for reasons that might not fly for everyone. Hurley is excellent at worldbuilding, and the unexpected use of a biopunk setting rife with body horror was visceral, gross and I LOVED it. unfortunately her stellar worldbuilding comes at the behest of characterization. I also felt this book needed to really slow down in order to establish the scale of conflict properly. a fun and unique read, but very flawed.

due to a miscommunication mishap, it turns out *this* title is our next book club read instead of snake agent. whoops. I'm still willing to finish snake agent since I'm so far in it by now but I guess this is my new spring break work companion.

Loved The Light Brigade so much I had to try another of her novels!

Well ultimately this #sciencefiction novel was disappointing. I appreciate the very unique world-building and the fact that casually all the characters are (queer) women, but in the end I just didn't enjoy this very much? You're kept in the dark for 9/10ths of the book with this character who lost her memory and by the time you find out the twist, it was too late for me to care. I also never connected with any of the characters. #QueerBooks

For my entry into the #Hr6SFFchallenge in the #24in48 #readathon I‘ve pulled just a fraction of the SciFi books on my shelves. SciFi was my first #genrelove when I found Anne McCaffrey & Piers Anthony on the library shelves. Then it was the classics, but the new SciFi coming through is just as fantastic & sometimes a little bit twisted. And weird. Like the tagged book, about an all female race living on an organic ship that are recycled for parts!

Went with my friend Jeff and my dog Whitey (well she's mostly my partner's dog but mine now too) to a dog-friendly bookstore today. I got two #QueerBooks, one of which was on sale! Queer space opera and bisexual necromancy in YA. Can't wait to read them! Whitey also really liked the store because a staff member gave her a dog treat. #DogsOfLitsy

Well that‘s too bad. This came recommended by a friend who knows the author, so I had high hopes. But alas, this type of Sci-fi just isn‘t for me. Sorry Jay!

Absolutely fantastic. An incredibly unique world about living flesh planets, the women who live in them and trying to escape the life it forces them into. The writing is so gooey and evocative that you feel slimy just reading it. Squidapus thought the plot was easy to predict because of the themes/point it tried to convey but it didn't detract from the journey. Also, all the people on these worlds are women! Well earned the genre "womb-punk"

Godspeed flipper-boat, wherever your weird little paddle flippers will take you. I'll never forget you. ;----;

Oh gosh, Squidapus and I have been so busy lately we haven't been able to read or post (or like all your wonderful posts!) as much as we want! Hopefully we can get back on the ball starting with The Stars Are Legion and be a bit more active!
Seems like several different books sloppily glued together. Despite how it's entirely inner monologues, the view point characters seem poorly developed.
So-so instead of bail because the world-building was interesting.
[Plot direction spoilers]
I've read too many "main character goes a quest journey collecting quirky companions" books. It's a lazy and unimaginative plot choice.

Congratulations on the milestone! And a big thank you for the awesome giveaway 💙💛💜 My choices will be:
1) The Stars Are Legion by Kameron Hurley
2) Wintersong by S. Jae-Jones
3) Empress of a Thousand Skies by Rhoda Belleza

I first listened to this audio book but this time around I read the hard copy. Definitely picked up more this time. As always, I‘m a sucker for worldbuilding and this has it in droves. From largely organic world-ships to cephalopod guns (🤩) to a female-only society with no mention of any other sex, it‘s just totally fascinating and easy to get lost in.
Needed a break from the Midnight Robber dialect so pulling up this title too. I'm in the mood for some world gen ship kinda sci fi.

That feeling when the book drags you in and doesn‘t let go ❤️

Ann Leckie describes this book as “kind of awesome fun” & she‘s not wrong. What‘s not to love? It‘s a space opera populated by an all female cast—that‘s right, there isn‘t a man to be found anywhere—living on world-ships on the fringes of the universe. It examines gender identity & more within a love story mixed up in a revenge tale wrapped inside some of the most creative worldbuilding I‘ve read in a long time. Excellent, thought provoking book.

Now heading to the outer rim of the universe—going with science fiction for the next read.

Come for the worldbuilding; stay, in confusion, with a need for closure.

DEVOURED! 😍
I don't know what I just read or what I think about it. I probably need to let it sit before I properly review it.

#EmojiNov #day5 #🤷🏻♀️#WhatThe? This novel from start to finish had me going “What the hell am I reading?!” The story is so strange and weird, I have no clue what the inside of the authors brain looks like, but I bet she‘d rival Stephen King himself! With living spaceships, all female human race, recycling people, women giving birth to ship parts & womb swapping, there‘s a hella ton of crazy here, but so well written you can‘t put it down🤷🏻♀️

Ohai Litsy. Do you like short fiction? Sci fi/fantasy? Reading stuff by and about LGBTQIA folks? If you answered "yes" to even one of the above you should join this FB group my friend just started: https://www.facebook.com/groups/269581550205839/ (Disclaimer: you don't need to be a lesbian or female-identifying to join.) Every week a new short story is posted, read, and discussed. It's low-commitment, but you just might discover a new fav author.

#SeptemBowie #day1 #SpaceOddity I have never read a book set in space that is more odd than this one. Where do I start? With the organic living ships that have tentacles, bleed and have cancers? What about the all female civilization that give birth, not to babies, but to parts of the ship that are needed? How about the womb swapping. Or the recycler monster that eats people. Space Oddity indeed.🚀

#BackToReading #day16 #OutOfThisWorld If you want Out Of This World, this novel has it both in situation (set in the dark edge of the galaxy) and in content (one of THE strangest books I've ever read) I can't begin to describe this book, just think All female population. Organic "ships" that are alive. Women who give birth to parts of the ship that are needed.(yep) and. Womb swapping. It's a wild wild ride!
Kameron Hurley's standalone SF novel is an all female character tour de force with imaginative world building and a twisting plot filled with deception and betrayal and although I felt that some of the supporting characters were a little undervalued (notably antagonists Rasida and Anan), the novel nevertheless kept me engrossed from beginning to end.

It's sooooo windy again today that they've put weather warnings up on site as it's getting stronger, Tom's happy though he's watching the paragliders.
I'm snuggled up in my sweater in my camping chair eating lemon sorbet & reading this by our pod 📚

Well. That has got to be the most strange, disgusting, weird, compelling, bananapants SciFi novel I have EVER read! In a reality far from ours, humanity is clinging to life on the rim of the galaxy in a series of organic ships called The Legion. I say humanity but it's only women. And instead of giving birth to babies, they give birth to parts of the ship. And there's cannibalism. And mutants. Plus womb swapping. Oh, don't forget the 2headed witches.🤔

SciFi has sure gotten stranger in the last fifty years. As hard as it was to explain the plot of Ancillary Justice, this book is even weirder. I'm 100pgs in & I have no idea what's going on. And neither does the main character.🤔 #ItsLifeJimButNotAsWeKnowIt

My next read is this highly regarded SciFi novel written by the same woman who wrote The Geek Feminist Revolution. On the rim of the universe, a company of decaying world-ships known as The Legion are moving in the seams between stars. A war has raged for control for generations with no progress. Zan awakens with no memory, but is told she's the salvation of the Legion, but even with no memory she knows they are lying. Soon she must choose sides.

So I bought this for my other half who can't get into it, so I'm adding it to my #tbr! There's so many fiction books on my list it'll be tough to choose which one to read once I l've finished The Pillars of the Earth.
Have you read this?

This was a really engaging read. I'm very pleased to get to see what's happening with the space opera genre these days. This one takes two elements we're familiar with—memory loss and generation ships that have existed so long that the passengers have forgotten they're passengers—and combines it with the idea of living spaceships, giving us a story that feels very fresh. Great characters, engaging storyline, and amazing worldbuilding.

Described to me as "lesbians in space" I really thought I was going to like this book more. The overall message and world building was pretty good, but there was something missing that I can't put a finger on.

What is love anyway but a hunger that no meal can satisfy?
#lesbiansinspace

Loving this book. It was pitched to me as Lesbians In Space, and it's definitely making good on that promise. Lesbians In Space and so much more.

As violent and bloody as can be expected from Hurley's work, but also a great exploration of a woman's dual nature and creator and destroyer, both of which involve massive amounts of pain and blood. I do wish it was longer though; plenty of stuff that was left hanging and I wish was further explored/developed.

Strong, wondrous storytelling. Loved this one and I'm so sad it's over.
It's wonderful when the right book comes along to feed your soul.

I have been waiting for this since its release was announced last year, and I am SO EXCITED to finally get to it! So glad to see Hurley go back to sci-fi, and in a space opera at that :D. Of course, it's bound to have a LOT of blood and other bodily fluids spilled out in ways that'll make me cringe in sympathetic pain, but that's part of reading a Kameron Hurley production, and I've always been willing that particular price-for-entry XD.

When you understand what the world is, you have two choices: Become a part of that world and perpetuate that system forever and ever, unto the next generation. Or fight it, and break it, and build something new. The former is safer, and easier. The later is scarier, because who is to say what you build will be any better? But living in servitude is not living. Slavery ensures one's existence, but there is no future in it.
