The Lazarus Files
The Lazarus Files: A Cold Case Investigation | Matthew McGough
13 posts | 10 read | 11 to read
A deeply-reported, riveting account of a cold case murder in Los Angeles, unsolved until DNA evidence implicated a shocking suspect a female detective within the LAPDs own ranks. On February 24, 1986, 29-year-old newlywed Sherri Rasmussen was murdered in the home she shared with her husband, John. The crime scene suggested a ferocious struggle, and police initially assumed it was a burglary gone awry. Before her death, Sherri had confided to her parents that an ex-girlfriend of Johns, a Los Angeles police officer, had threatened her. The Rasmussens urged the LAPD to investigate the ex-girlfriend, but the original detectives only pursued burglary suspects, and the case went cold. DNA analysis did not exist when Sherri was murdered. Decades later, a swab from a bite mark on Sherris arm revealed her killer was in fact female, not male. A DNA match led to the arrest and conviction of veteran LAPD Detective Stephanie Lazarus, Johns onetime girlfriend. The Lazarus Files delivers the visceral experience of being inside a real-life murder mystery. McGough reconstructs the lives of Sherri, John and Stephanie; the love triangle that led to Sherris murder; and the homicide investigation that followed. Was Stephanie protected by her fellow officers? What did the LAPD know, and when did they know it? Are there other LAPD cold cases with a police connection that remain unsolved?

I feel like I‘ve been listening to this chapter since 1988. I‘m sure it‘ll all come together eventually, but the deep tangent this is going on is tedious as hell. It‘s like the author has a word count they need to hit, so they need to go into e v e r y d e t a i l . . .

I could have lived the rest of my life without knowing what “Joey” had for breakfast and what was embroidered on Cathy‘s Fedco uniform 🙄🙄🙄

WHAT. A. SLOG. This was meticulously well-researched, but often repetitive with no clear narrative structure. Part 3 truly made no sense in the book. This is a bonkers true crime story and would be much more captivating with a stronger edit. #netgalley ⭐️⭐️

This story is messy, so very messy. The murder, the "investigation", the husband (messy and a wuss), the narrator (terrible) ...yup, just messy ?

What wasn't messy was the research and time the writer took in compiling the story from start to finish.

Sherri Rasmussen was murdered in her home and her case went cold for over 20 years despite suspicions of family and friends. McGough details with careful reporting and research the possibility of a cover-up within the LAPD to protect their own reputation by not solving the case. The story itself is fascinating, but the writing is a bit dry and/or repetitive in places. Also, the author‘s narration isn‘t the best.

A highly detailed book about the murder of Sherri Rasmussen and how a cold case was solved 23 years after the attack. I first heard about this case on the Casefile podcast which featured the murderer‘s police interview. McGough dives deep into this case and features the murderer‘s own diary entries and case file notes. #NetGalley #arc

Sherri Rasmussen was murdered in 1986 and her death remained a mystery for the next 23 years.

This was quite a sensational case. Was there a conspiracy amongst the LAPD to protect her murderer? At the very least, the lead detective on the case was negligent in immediately concluding that Sherri‘s death was the result of a botched burglary.

I found this case fascinating but the book could have had quite a bit of content edited out. #netgalley

Reviewsbylola I‘m using this one for #booked2019 because it involves a #femaledetective, albeit not in the traditional way. 😉 @4thhouseontheleft @BarbaraTheBibliophage @Cinfhen 6y
Cinfhen Nice!! Someone else used the Michelle McNamara book which I thought was another clever choice for #FemaleDetective 6y

Tonight‘s #bathandbook features one of Lush‘s jelly bombs. I tend to stay away from the jelly bombs . . . the jelly is like mucous in the tub. 😂🤢 But this one smells like Snow Fairy and I could use the extra moisture so here we go!

candority I haven‘t been brave enough to try their jelly bombs, because I‘m afraid it will be exactly how you describe it 😂 6y
BlameJennyJane I didn‘t know jelly bombs were a thing! Hmm. Mucus tho... 🤣 6y
Literary_Siren They now make jelly body wash. I saw a video on Snapchat the other day. It was kinda weird. 6y

Reviewsbylola The jelly body wash is pretty cool. My kids love it and it doesn‘t bother me the way the jelly bombs do. It‘s sort of like rubbing a slab of jello all over your body. 😂 Not the most practical thing but not bad. @Literary_Siren (edited) 6y
Reviewsbylola They‘re fairly new. This one isn‘t as bad as I remember. I think it‘s the third one I‘ve tried. One of the previous ones I used was black and it was just very unpleasant. But typically I stay away from the black bombs too. They make the bath water look dirty and they just don‘t appeal to me. 😂 @BlameJennyJane 6y
Reviewsbylola I will say I‘m glad I gave it another go. This one isn‘t bad at all. The jelly dissolved fairly quickly. Maybe they tweaked the formula a little. @candority 6y
emilyhaldi Ohhhhh I used the black one too once not knowing what it was!!! Yuck 😜 6y
