This was really lovely. Rick is starting middle school and beginning to question some things, like his friendship with Jeff the jerk and why he doesn't seem to like any girls (or boys). He starts spending more time getting to know his grandfather and hanging out with the Rainbow group after school. This was just another heartwarming story by Gino about embracing your identity and a great way to introduce LGBTQ+ topics to younger readers

This was a sequel telling a new story. Rick, at Melissa‘s school, was Jeff the jerks friend. It‘s hard to let go of a bad best friend in middle school. Yet alone beginning to question yourself. It was this conversation that hit me. Whole conversation on you‘re to young to know, those feelings will come… late bloomer. I was always told that. Hasn‘t changed for me. Short and simple like Melissa. Great non-binary rep and after school club. #asexual

This book packs a punch and should be read by everyone!! Important topics are discussed in an extremely approachable way… sexual orientation, gender identity, finding where you belong and who your tribe is are all covered in the book! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Still catching up with reviews. I‘ll go with short and sweet for this middle grade novel.

Rick starts middle school with his best friend, who may not be the kindest of people. As those around him become obsessed with girls, he learns about the A in LGBTQIA+ - whether he‘s asexual or a ‘late bloomer‘, being who you are is ok. Plus he gets to know his grandad.

It‘s a lovely, age-appropriate novel of acceptance and Alex Gino is a complete star.

Another fantastic middle grade novel with amazing rep by Alex Gino! Rick‘s relationships with Grandpa Ray and Ronnie were my favorites. And enough cannot be said about breaking up with a friend, especially when you have to acknowledge they‘re not a nice person. Loved to see that here.

This was good. This author seems to write at a level that would resonate with middle schoolers if I recall myself at that age. The conflicts and questions 11 year old Rick is facing are real and respected, never minimized by the author. When it comes to gender and sexual identity the younger generations are leading the way yet still are learning. TV can give us overly mature, confident kids but Gino‘s kids feel authentic, the kid next door.

I really like this author. This book is just as good as George! Melissa is back as a supporting character this time, as is the bully Jeff. Rick starts off friends with Jeff, but realises he has better friends elsewhere. Rick also has an absolutely adorable, sweet relationship with his Grandpa Ray. They are both sci-fi nerds and even dress up and go to a sci-fi convention together. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

I discovered this stand alone sequel to George when I looked for the audiobook at my library, so I thought I‘d give this a go, too… just as soon as I get some sleep. I need some of this sweetness to get me through my Thursday (long story, I‘ll talk about it later).

A cute middle grade book. Rick is entering 6th grade. His friend is starting to notice girls, but Rick isn‘t attracted to them. He‘s not attracted to boys either. Then he learns about asexuality and wonders if that could be him. This book is about learning to be comfortable with yourself and finding where you belong.

I loved Gino‘s other books. This quick MG read did not disappoint. As he enters middle school, Rick is starting question things. His best friend Jeff treats him well enough, but bullies everyone else. Rick‘s also not interested in girls yet… or boys. After finding the Rainbow Spectrum club at school and connecting with his Grandfather, things start coming together.
This book is a great model for kids looking to navigate relationships with peers.

A short, cute read! Rick gets to middle school and discovers the Rainbow Spectrum club. He hadn‘t thought about it before, but he wonders if he likes girls at all. It doesn‘t help that his best friend, Jeff, makes fun of the people in the club and defaces their posters. And so, Rick has to shake his former best friend and figure out who is his. A great read, but even though they‘re technically companion books, a recommend reading George first. 4⭐️

My husband bought this book, then my son binged it, and today it was my turn. All 3 of us saw Alex Gino in Oregon a few years ago and we are fans. This is another fabulous middle grade books about figuring out Queer identity.
If I‘d had books like this as a kid it wouldn‘t have taken me so long to figure out I‘m bisexual. I‘m so grateful for authors sharing stories today about being who you are. ❤️🌈

Rick & his best friend Jeff are starting 6th grade—middle school, in other words. Except, the more Rick spends time with Jeff, the less he likes him. And the more Rick thinks about who he might be, the more confused he gets. When he learns about the Rainbow Spectrum Club at school, he decides to attend a meeting. It‘s a decision that changes everything. This is a fantastic MG book about asking questions, finding yourself & your community.

Damaged book which the publisher didn‘t want sent back means I have a new book to read tonight (largely because I‘m the person at the store who reads middle grade books).

Rick is starting middle school. He knows he isn‘t like has friends when it comes to finding people attractive so he starts questioning who he is. When he find the Rainbow Spectrum Club he starts to figure out who he maybe with his new friends. What he does know is his best friend is a jerk and he needs to cut ties with him. I loved how Rick and his grandfathers relationship bloomed and that he could talk to his grandfather about how he was feeling

Audio laminating. Trying to come up with a new system for my classroom so I don‘t have 7 two year olds fighting over the sink to wash their hands and not social distancing!

From the author of George comes a book set in that same world focusing on the side character of Rick, a 6th grader who comes to realize that his best friend is a jerk and that he can create a new place for himself. Rick joins the Rainbow Spectrum club and learns about himself and his classmates. I particularly liked Rick‘s grandfather and their developing relationship. This book was short and would be great for probably 5th grade and up.

I read less MG these days, but gobbled this story up in audio. It helps that it's short. But it's also such a fun story about examining relationships, finding out your grandparent is kinda cool, and finding the right words to identify yourself
