The Tumbling Turner Sisters
The Tumbling Turner Sisters | Juliette Fay
69 posts | 26 read | 93 to read
"In 1919, the four Turner sisters and their parents are barely scraping along. Their father is a low-paid boot stitcher in Johnson City, NY, and the Turners are always one paycheck away from eviction. When their father's hand is crushed and he's forced to quit, their domineering mother decides that the vaudeville stage is their best--and only--chance for salvation. With everything at stake, the Tumbling Turners take to the road and the four young women, teenagers Gert, Winnie, and Kit, and Nell, a 22-year-old new mother and recent widow of the Great War, are soon immersed in the tumultuous world of American Vaudeville on a nine-city tour that will make or break them. Swindlers and ne'er-do-wells await in abundance, but so does kindness, and just maybe a chance at love. Equal parts heartwarming, charming, and reflective, The Tumbling Turner Sisters is the story of the sacrifices we make in the name of family, and how the most unlikely choice can ultimately be the one to lead us toward our truest selves"--

Read for #Booked2023: Book described by words twist, stretch, balance. 1918: 4 sisters start a Vaudeville act to provide for their family. This was a fun historical fiction that included some interesting points in history that had me doing some research. The author was inspired to write this after learning her great-grandfather had a Vaudeville act. Also, aren‘t these endpapers gorgeous? 😍

Cinfhen Endpapers are STUNNING!!! Cool choice for prompt 🧘‍♀️ 2y
Cathythoughts Yes ! Those endpapers are really nice 💫 2y

Tonight‘s Silent Book Club meeting featured Middlemarch, The Tumbling Turner Sisters (for Booked2023), and a delicious spiked chai tea.

4/5 stars

"You fell of a cliff, but you haven't fallen onto rocks."

This was a heartwarming read and really enjoyable.
Set in 1919, 4 sisters and their mother set off from their little town to try their hand at vaudeville to make a living. Through achievements on and off the stage we get to see the sisters love and heartbreak.
A definite must read for anyone who wants to read a vaudeville story that is both informative and entertaining.

Maybe I should allow this to inch to a so so rating--I couldn't tell much difference between the book's two narrators and the tone was often moralizing. But Fay does incorporate a lot of fascinating details about vaudeville in the 1910s, as the Turner family works the circuit. And she even gives her great-grandparents cameos! Not too plotty until the end, but sanctimony aside, I enjoyed the wandering. Fun story, at the end of the day.

I just finished this book for book club. I found it to be an enjoyable read about early 1900s Vaudeville. The fact that some of it took place in my hometown of Binghamton was an added bonus.

Fellow Librarians, can any of you give me a little information about Netgalley.com? One of my coworkers recommended it to me to read free ARC on ebooks/my kindle, but I would like a little more info about what all it entails, how to set a profile , and any other info you might have about it? Thank you!!

LibrarianRyan I'm a professional reader. You just sign up. Answer the question. They will look over your app. I'm a librarian and I was writting reviews for library Journal so I have more open to me. Even if you get accepted, you may get turned down for certain books until you are more established. 8y
Marchpane I haven't used it but am also interested. I'm torn because getting books pre-publication would be awesome but it seems you're under some obligation to review them within a certain timeframe? I like reading to my own schedule too much for that 🤷🏼‍♀️ 8y
Emily92Bibliophile @Marchpane I feel the same way- I have my reading challenges all lined up and I'm not sure if I can change up my reading schedule just now. 8y

Sue I use it as a blogger and just love it. I'm not sure what they would expect of you as a librarian. @Marchpane I don't post reviews of books I don't like. There is no obligation to review per se, but if you make a habit of not reviewing it will affect the volume you receive. As an Aussie I suggest you go for it - I get some great quality stuff and I suspect that it's due to the small numbers of Aussie reviewers. 8y
readinginthedark There's no requirement to review, but like @Sue said: it does affect how many and which books you get. There have been a couple that I haven't reviewed before the publication date but mostly I just try to limit how many I request so that I can still read what I want. I think it's a good way to discover books and publishers I might not have seen otherwise. 8y
brutalbookworm Honestly it's pretty amazing. You literally put in a recommendation to win an ARC and if you're approved it goes to your tablet. As long as you have your tablet email (from amazon or whatever) it will go right to it. I just got approved for one two nights ago! 8y
Marchpane @sue you might be talking me round... can't hurt to give it a try 😉 8y
Sue @Marchpane You know you want to 😜 8y
Emily92Bibliophile Thanks everyone! I'll give it a try soon 😊 (edited) 8y
LibrarianRyan @Sue I post reviews of books I don't like. I also comment if I think a book has a formatting, or layout problem. I think this is something publishers need to hear. 8y

"Outside of a dog, a book is man's best friend. Inside of a dog, it's too dark to read." One of my favorite Groucho Marx quotes, and I love how this book uses quotes from classic performers like Buster Keaton and James Cagney at the start of every chapter to, well, set the stage.

This is a fun look at vaudeville and family drama around 1920. I especially like when books have a note at the end to tell what was factual or inspired by reality, and this one does.

Suzze Oh, yes! Whenever I read historical fiction I am often left wondering which parts were factual. End up Googling things. I have this on the shelf. 8y

I won an audio version via Goodreads. I highly enjoyed it. The chapters alternate between two characters, who are sisters. I think this would be reason enough to listen, rather than read, because their POVs don't differ radically.

The setting in vaudeville in the early 1900's is what sold the book for me. Learned a lot about the "circuit" and the four sisters were all distinct and interesting.
