Norco '80
Norco '80: The True Story of the Most Spectacular Bank Robbery in American History | Peter Houlahan
17 posts | 8 read | 25 to read
Norco 80 is a gripping true crime account of one of the most violent bank heists in US history. Norco 80 tells the story of how five heavily armed young menled by an apocalyptic born-again Christianattempted a bank robbery that turned into one of the most violent criminal events in U.S. history, forever changing the face of American law enforcement. Part action thriller and part courtroom drama, Norco 80 transports the reader back to the Southern California of the 1970s, an era of predatory evangelical gurus, doomsday predictions, megachurches, and soaring crime rates, with the threat of nuclear obliteration looming over it all. A group of landscapers transforms into a murderous gang of bank robbers armed to the teeth with military-grade weapons. Their desperate getaway turned the surrounding towns into war zones. When it was over, three were dead and close to twenty wounded; a police helicopter was forced down from the sky, and thirty-two police vehicles were destroyed by thousands of rounds of ammo. The resulting trial shook the community to the core, raising many issues that continue to face society today: from the epidemic of post-traumatic stress disorder within law enforcement to religious extremism and the militarization of local police forces.

Norco ‘80 is a wild ride of a book, looking at a bank robbery from its inception through its execution and aftermath and the ultimate trial. It‘s great narrative nonfiction and shows a component of how the police in the US became militarized. It‘s an interesting, if quite violent, story. #botmbacklist

I started a rom-com this morning and couldn't bail on it quickly enough. I thought a lighter read would be a good break from my busy schedule, but now I'm thinking true crime is exactly what I need. 😁

CoffeeK8 I‘m listening to the podcast of this now and it‘s fascinating 4y

I'm a little late, but here is my November BotM! I've heard great things about The Guest List, but I'd never heard of Norco '80 before. I had to pick it up when I realized it was a true crime about a bank heist gone wrong. 😱

Houlahan should design rollercoasters because that is exactly what reading Norco ‘80 felt like in all the best ways. The pacing was at times a slow build and at others, a fast-paced dive and barrel roll through the events of a bank robbery gone wrong. I wouldn‘t recommend the audiobook as there are too many names and details to remember, but this little piece of history is truly fascinating. I will never look at Hamner and Fourth St. the same.

My latest impulse buy! I live just south of Norco, and I used to work for a bank in Norco! Needless to say, I cannot wait to dive into this.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ What a damned disaster. What began as a terrifying take-over style bank heist quickly turned into a deadly shootout and car chase. The robbers, equipped with quite an arsenal, were not giving up peacefully. The police were utterly outgunned. This violent incident was a pivotal moment in law enforcement history. Horrific, but fascinating.

*Swooning* over this cover. #coverlove

britt_brooke @Megabooks I think you recommended this to me - so, thanks! 💚 5y
Megabooks @britt_brooke Glad you enjoyed it! Such a crazy incident. And so relevant today. 5y
TiredLibrarian This book wants to be a movie, if it isn't already. Agree on the cover love 💕 5y
britt_brooke @TiredLibrarian There‘s a movie called Rapid Fire that‘s based on it, but it looks pretty bad, unfortunately. 5y
britt_brooke @Megabooks That it changed how police operate is fascinating, though unfortunate. People are nuts. The doomsday prepper stuff was bonkers, too. 5y

#AyUpAugust Even though I‘ve had a busy weekend, I couldn‘t #stop reading this book. A riveting account of one of the wildest bank heists on US soil and craziest trials to determine the guilt of the Narco 3. I thought journalist Peter Houlahan did a great job of recreating the chaos and timeline of events, making for a compelling and captivating read.

vivastory Thanks for tagging me. This sounds fantastic. I will definitely be adding to my BOTM box next month! 5y
Megabooks So did the trial eventually get exciting because I got kinda bored at the start of that. I‘ll pick it back up if it does. Glad you liked it!! 5y
MicheleinPhilly @vivastory It‘s also available on Hoopla. 5y

Cinfhen I really enjoyed the trial more than the bank heist @Megabooks 🤷‍♀️but I‘m not sure if I would have liked this book on audio @MicheleinPhilly I‘m more of a visual learner/ reader 5y
Cinfhen I hope you like the book @vivastory 🤞🏼 5y

I see my NF buddy @Megabooks put the tagged book in hibernation but I‘m gonna give it a try 🤞🏼If I hate it I have another book ready to go 😁

vivastory I'll be waiting for your verdict as I'm curious about this one 5y
Megabooks Good luck! I was feeling it until I got bogged down in the pre-trial! 5y
Cinfhen I read a big chunk (ok, I skimmed some parts) BUT this story is SO 🍌👖‼️It needs to be a Netflix docu-series @Megabooks @vivastory I‘m enjoying it🤓 5y

I think I‘m going to take a break on this, at least for #24in48. I‘ve gotten to the trial and jury selection, blah, blah, blah. ☹️ The shootout was super interesting, though!

Livelovebark Did you know they are literally demo-ing the bank this week. Is that random coincidence or did you know that and decided to read this book? 😱 5y
Megabooks @Livelovebark No! I had gotten it from #botm in June, and just started it randomly. How interesting! 5y
Livelovebark I‘m originally from 40 miles S of Norco and have always subscribed to local news, I got a notification of this story this morning about the demolition, didn‘t think twice about it. Then scrolled Litsy and saw your post about it! So random to happen all in one day 😆 i guess I‘m gonna have to read it now 5y
Megabooks It‘s a great book. The part about the robbery and chase is fast-paced and fun. Now, I‘m between the robbery and trial. It‘s worth reading for the amazing journalism on the robbery, robbers, and cops alone! @Livelovebark (edited) 5y

Tonight‘s reading and a favorite #booksleeve. 🥰📚🥳 #currentlyreading

My steps have sucked for the past couple of days because of leftover rain from the tropical storm coming through. Only at 4K today. 👎🏻🌧

Soubhiville Very cute booksleeve! And don‘t feel bad about your steps. Think of the rain as an enforced self-care break. 🐶❤️ 5y
erzascarletbookgasm Love the book sleeve 5y
Megabooks @Soubhiville Thanks!! 😊👍🏻 Good way to think of it. 5y

KT1432 Can't wait to see what you think of Norco! I have it too lol. It's moving up on my TBR. 5y
Megabooks @lele1432 I‘m 100 pages in and loving it! Very fast paced, but I wish I knew more about guns! 5y
KT1432 Oh wow! Okay now I'm really intrigued lol. I know nothing about guns though. 5y
Megabooks @lele1432 I basically know the robbers have a lot more and a lot bigger guns than the cops!! 5y

Cinfhen Can‘t wait to see what u pick @Reviewsbylola xx Hope you weren‘t affected by the storms !?!!! 6y
Reviewsbylola Nope, they just missed us! 6y
Cinfhen Put something in the mail to you last week @Reviewsbylola should be there soon...been missing you and the family. Hope all is well 😘 6y
Reviewsbylola Thank you. 🥰🥰 I‘m so exhausted from the past few weeks. I‘m only on Litsy right now because I‘m stuck at swim practice. 😆 6y
vivastory This was a great month! I picked Recursion & Daisy Jones, but I was really tempted to get the one you tagged. Looking forward to your thoughts! 6y
KT1432 I want all of the NF add-ons! 😩 6y
Prairiegirl_reading I can not wait for Recursion! (edited) 6y
MicheleinPhilly Damn it!!! 6y
Cinfhen I‘m a little nervous about my add ons, I haven‘t seen any reviews @vivastory @MicheleinPhilly @lele1432 @Prairiegirl_reading so I‘m taking a chance because there were some older books I wanted to add, too!!!! (edited) 6y
Hooked_on_books This is exactly my tentative box. I haven‘t finalized yet since there‘s so many good choices! A second membership is looking pretty good right now. 6y
Cinfhen If you want @Hooked_on_books we can swap books!!! You can have all 3 of these after I read them.... 6y
Hooked_on_books @Cinfhen Oh my, that‘s really tempting! I could get A Nearly Normal Family, Leaving the Witness, and Eyes in the Sky and swap those if they appeal to you. Or if they don‘t, I have an entire shelf of backlog for you to choose from. 🙄😆 6y
Hooked_on_books I also have a number of books on my shelves that are on your TBR. I could pull them, snap them, and post so you can pick the three you want so I can read them and send them along. So exciting! 6y
Cinfhen Choose whatever appeals to you @Hooked_on_books and we can figure out the swap another time!!! I have a ton of backlog too!!!! But I‘m more than happy to send these books....it just may take a little time because I‘m out of the country until mid July, so I won‘t read them for awhile. No pressure...just a suggestion. 6y
Hooked_on_books @Cinfhen Sounds great! No pressure on time. Things take forever to get to me anyway, so no biggie. I‘m excited! 6y
Cinfhen Great!!! @Hooked_on_books Better than a second account ♥️ 6y
LauraJ Actually tempted to rejoin...😈 6y
saresmoore @vivastory You‘re back in? Everybody‘s posts are making me envious! Do you like the changes? 6y
vivastory @saresmoore I rejoined a couple of months ago. I really like the changes. They've really expanded their selections. I still occasionally skip a month (I skipped May) but I think it's worth keeping. 6y
Cinfhen Not trying to spend your $$ @saresmoore or @LauraJ BUT it‘s REALLY gotten good!!!!! I‘ll send you the friend link if you want... I think you get a free book ( I know I will 😝🤪🥳) 6y
Cinfhen With their new BFF program books are back to $10.00 when u factor in its now 14 books instead of 12 @vivastory which makes it a good value 🤑 6y
