The Last Mile
The Last Mile | David Baldacci
In his #1 New York Times bestseller Memory Man, David Baldacci introduced the extraordinary detective Amos Decker-the man who can forget nothing. Now, Decker returns in a spectacular new thriller . . . THE LAST MILE Convicted murderer Melvin Mars is counting down the last hours before his execution--for the violent killing of his parents twenty years earlier--when he's granted an unexpected reprieve. Another man has confessed to the crime. Amos Decker, newly hired on an FBI special task force, takes an interest in Mars's case after discovering the striking similarities to his own life: Both men were talented football players with promising careers cut short by tragedy. Both men's families were brutally murdered. And in both cases, another suspect came forward, years after the killing, to confess to the crime. A suspect who may or may not have been telling the truth. The confession has the potential to make Melvin Mars--guilty or not--a free man. Who wants Mars out of prison? And why now? But when a member of Decker's team disappears, it becomes clear that something much larger--and more sinister--than just one convicted criminal's life hangs in the balance. Decker will need all of his extraordinary brainpower to stop an innocent man from being executed.

Baldacci is always a good bet and I really enjoyed listening to this. Melvin Mars is on death row, last mile, for killing his parents… when another man confesses. However, Amos Decker thinks something is off about the confession and, yet, that Mars is still innocent. They both look into the past to find the truth. Trigger-racists.

FEBRUARY STATS

Books Read: 35
Books read from physical tbr: 6
Books bought: 5
Current tbr count: 679

Not a great month for reading books off my shelves, but I ended the month with one book less than I started it with, so I'll count that a win.

Best of March: The Amos Decker Books by Baldacci
Worst of March: The Pendergast Books. The last two have just been so disappointing.

squirrelbrain Love the Amos Decker series! 3y

#FabulousFebruary #Readathon is off to a slow start. 😪 I set my goal high because of lots of downtime after knee replacement surgery but wasn‘t counting on scrambled brain from my meds. 😵‍💫 I‘ve been able to read about ten pages of Olympus, Texas, and listen to a couple of hours of The Last Mile while getting in my “exercise”. Missy Jo is taking good care of me though!

annahenke I‘m also off this week with the readathon due to a personal situation. It‘s good to dive into another world! 3y

🎧 interesting audiobook has a male & female narrator. Typical decent Amos Decker story from Baldacci. I‘ve got three more to go. 😁 Decker never forgets and that makes solving a murder just a matter of time. There are adult situations, language & graphic descriptions of ick. The murder mystery spans a couple generations. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I loved this book and found out it‘s part of a series which features Amos Decker - due to a freak football injury he has perfect memory, so he is the best detective.
He takes on the case of Melvin Mars, college super football player who is framed for the murder of his parents.
Great characters and plot twists. Like the best Baldacci, can‘t put it down.

I picked up The Last Mile by David Baldacci at a drug store a while back, thinking it would be a good read at a cottage some summer, some light fluff I could take or leave.

It turns out I really enjoyed the book. It has fairly balanced character development, everyone is a feel good character, no giant plot holes, not a lot of friction when reading. Which might be my only criticism, it can feel a little too easy to read at times. Too formulaic.

Anoher of my mom‘s #easylistening audiobooks. This one sees the protagonist better established in his surroundings (abd a cute new bromance), though the case itself is a harebrained sequence of conjectures and guesswork that happen to come true. This is so far off reasonable FBI work (or logic) that i cannot help but ask myself why Baldacci turned away from his usual oedipal superhero towards football fan fic...meh.

A complex plot with lots of details and twists. It really took off just after the halfway point with new details involving the accused‘s parents that I wasn‘t expecting at all, but kept me invested.

Amos Decker is a great character. So entertaining, with his ability to remember every detail about everything, always. Love the characters in here, including the accused Melvin Mars. Looking forward to the next installment. Also, I enjoyed the audio!

I really appreciate that this book and its prequel, Memory Man, explore synesthesia, one of my favorite literary devices and an absolutely fascinating psychological condition.

daf_fields This is such a well-written, timely book that I can't help.but groan audibly at some of the despicable characters: ignorant, close-minded and responsible for contemporary backwards thinking. 8y

Read this in quick order as I was enjoying it so much! I think this was a much better book than the first book in the series. I liked the opening to the book which hooked me and all the intrigue that went on after it. Quite a complex plot but seemed so simple by the end. I particularly enjoyed the group of characters pulled together for this one. Certainly scope for a longer series. I look forward to reading the next book in the series. 4.5 Stars.

squirrelbrain I agree @Andrew65. Whilst I enjoyed the first book in the series I thought that this one was even better. I enjoyed the relationships developing between the different team members and look forward to seeing how these progress. 8y

As part of travelling on Sunday and my commute to work book, I have been listening to The Last Mile, book 2 in the Amos Decker series. I read and enjoyed book 1, The Memory Man, but so far enjoying this one more - a very good start to it. Quite a different feel to the first book. Enjoying the narrators.

DeborahSmall Loved this one too 8y
Andrew65 @DeborahSmall I love the main character, but it must be a total nightmare to remember everything and not be able to shut off that voice in your head. There are things we all want to forget! 8y
DeborahSmall Definitely, I love Amos as a character. I've read all of Baldacci's books apart from his most recent. I think this series and the Will Robie are my favourite 8y
See All 16 Comments
Andrew65 @deborahsmall Have only read this series, 4 of the King and Maxwell books and the first John Puller book. Definitely want to get to the Will Robie books as I've heard good things about them. 8y
DeborahSmall His standalones are excellent. He wrote 2 in a series year ago and hasn't went further, main character called Shaw. I'm not at home so don't have the books to hand but one of them is called Deliver us From Evil. I think if he'd carried on with that series it would have been the best. I'm going home this evening for a few hours. I'll tag what I think are his best standalone novels 8y
Andrew65 @DeborahSmall Thanks Deborah that would be great. I did actually read one of his standalones a few years ago that I really enjoyed, but was quite a different type of book. 8y
DeborahSmall This is the only one I haven't read!' 8y
Andrew65 @DeborahSmall I have to say Wish You Well was excellent! Very different, it almost had a bit of the Grapes of Wrath feel about it. I had heard that schools (possibly in the US) were using it as a set text for their students. Not surprised there is plenty of depth and discussion that could be had about it. Could easily be called a classic in the future and very different to his other books. 8y
Andrew65 @DeborahSmall Thanks a lot for these. 😊 I have reserved Absolute Power from the library which I should get on the 4th or 5th May. 8y
DeborahSmall I'll order it and give it a go. The Winners was the book that got me into Baldacci 8y
Andrew65 @DeborahSmall Hope you like it. It was Wish You Well that was my first David Baldacci and likewise made me want to read more of him. 8y
DeborahSmall Another couple of books I love set around the White House are by Brad Meltzer, The First Counsel and The Tenth Justice is set in the Supreme Court 8y
Andrew65 Have not read these Brad Meltzer books but did enjoy The Book of Fate and The Book of Lies. Despite the similar titles they are not connected. 8y

This author has a new fan... Me.
This story was equally as gripping as the first in the series. I was constantly guessing the "who dun it?" and why?, even when I'd had to put it down. I couldn't get the story out of my mind until I'd turned that last page. I want to know what case Amos Decker is going to take on next and if we'll see anything more from 'Mellow'. Unfortunately the next book isn't out yet, I just hope Mr Baldacci is working on it.
