I read fantasy books every now and again which is why I opted for The Left Handed Booksellers of London. I found the 1st Chapter interesting after a drab prologue. Subsequent chapters didn't really inspire me nor did they do much to tittilate my imagination. By the time I got to the area where a pot of tea was required and with the elongated discussion surrounding it, I had had enough. Perhaps fantasy books are not really for me after all.

This book had some problems:
-excessive details that contributed nothing to the plot
-3rd person limited POV that would change character focus in the middle of a scene
-MC‘s main personality trait was “not scared”

It is a cool concept and had some good things in the last third of the book but it needed better editing.

I loved this. I'm already looking forward to the next installment. Fantasy audiobooks seem to be what I'm in the mood for right now.

Looking for a fun, unique PG read with a magical coming of age aspect + a very slow (cheeky) burn? Then you want to be here where we have England's Old World mythology mixed with Magically Realistic Urban Fantasy. That sounds like a steaming pile of mish mosh BUT it meshed together nicely. The old school Magic blended seamlessly with the New. There are creatures, friends forged in life threatening scenarios and I hope there's another in the works.

Susan‘s just trying to find her father when she arrives in London. She wasn‘t expecting to land headfirst into a magical world that doesn‘t know what to do with her abilities.

I loved this. Bookish and a fascinating magical culture. Susan was so practical when faced with so many problems. And the booksellers are amazing.

I wish Merlin‘s gender-fluidity was more present, and this felt like 2 or 3 books worth of stuff crammed together. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

So excited for my new bookmark! And it came just as I found the tagged book!

You know what happens when you reorganize bookshelves to make a book nook? You bury books. And then can‘t find them for a month😂. I‘m glad I found it, so now I can finish it! ❤️

Crazeedi I have that bookmark! It's so totally cool!! 3y

It‘s been forever since I‘ve posted. I think the pandemic has really hit my reading hard. I read 32 books last year, which is incredibly low for me and this is only my second of the year. Trying to refocus!!!now on to the review...lol. I was torn between a pick a pick and a so-so on this one. It was a fun story line, the writing was decent, but it felt incomplete. That being said, I finished it in two sittings, so I rounded up to a pick.

So, I'm currently on page 57 of this one, and I'm just wondering is it going to start making sense at some point?

shanaqui That sounds ominous! I normally trust Garth Nix, I hope it does start making sense! 3y
bookwrm526 I agree with @shanaqui , I love all the books of his I‘ve read, so hopefully it will! 3y
Traci1 @shanaqui @bookwrm526 It's not that I'm not enjoying it. It seems like it's going to be a good story. But I feel like I got dropped into a world with no background knowledge at all. I'm assuming it'll become clearer soon enough. 3y
bookwrm526 @Traci1 Ah, I see :) I find that to be the case with a lot of fantasy that I end up loving! 3y

A whole Boxing Day of laziness and eating left over desserts but I couldn‘t get captured by my current reads so I picked this up. What a delight! This is urban fantasy light - the feel of a younger Rivers of London - but with a bookish aesthetic. In this version of 1980s London a family of magical booksellers work to keep the overlapping worlds of mortal and magical from causing trouble. With a sprinkle of zombies and possible romance. ⬇️

Centique But not romance WITH zombies because that would be ill advised 😂😂😂 Photo is not actual desserts eaten - I screen shot this thinking I would make a platter like this, but of course I didn‘t. #plattersiwishedimade 3y

I am so thoroughly delighted by my #JolabokaflodSwap bounty! I wish I could stay up all night to read, but unfortunately, I have a 5 am shift tomorrow. So one chapter will have to suffice for tonight!

Thank you so, so much to @kspenmoll for my wonderful treats and to @MaleficentBookDragon for this truly amazing swap idea!

Loved, loved, loved this book! Nix is a great writer & this is a fantastic story filled with likable characters, a grand adventure, mystery, magic, & mayhem. Also, definite Neverwhere vibes throughout & that‘s a great thing. Susan Arkshaw goes to London searching for her father. Merlin, a left-handed bookseller, is trying to solve the mystery of his mother‘s murder. Their paths collide, old world magic intrudes, & adventure ensues. Excellent.

“Books help us anchor our souls.”

I started but didn‘t finish this book in October—I‘ve been savoring a chapter or two day to make it last longer. Definitely a love letter to all things books. Also, a really great adventure. Now, if you‘ll excuse me, we‘re about to visit a bookstore which stocks “all Penguins in print.” Can you imagine?!? 😍

Littens!!! This book is sooooo good. I‘m really enjoying it. Honestly though, Nix never disappoints! This book definitely stands on its own but I must admit it has, more than once, given me a “Hey, this is Neverwhere for the YA crowd” vibe. It‘s similarly fantastic in all the ways that matter—the sense of magic & wonder right around the corner, a city within a city, larger than life characters, danger, adventure, secrets & more! Love it (so far).

Honestly, does it even matter what this book is about? I would buy it for the title alone! Plus, it‘s Garth Nix. While I don‘t need more reason than those that to be interested in it, the premise sounds fantastic—a girl on a quest to find her father, magical fighting booksellers who police the world when old England intrudes on the modern world. Yes please!!! Out this September.

wanderinglynn That sounds awesome! Stacked! 4y
