Spectacular Now
Spectacular Now | Tim Tharp
This National Book Award Finalist is now a major motion picture -- one of the most buzzed-about films at Sundance 2013, starring Shailene Woodley (star of "The Fault in our Stars "and" Divergent") and Miles Teller (star of "Whiplash"). SUTTER KEELY. HE S the guy you want at your party. He ll get everyone dancing. He ll get everyone in your parents pool. Okay, so he s not exactly a shining academic star. He has no plans for college and will probably end up folding men s shirts for a living. But there are plenty of ladies in town, and with the help of Dean Martin and Seagram s V.O., life s pretty fabuloso, actually. Until the morning he wakes up on a random front lawn, and he meets Aimee. Aimee s clueless. Aimee is a social disaster. Aimee needs help, and it s up to the Sutterman to show Aimee a splendiferous time and then let her go forth and prosper. But Aimee s not like other girls, and before long he s in way over his head. For the first time in his life, he has the power to make a difference in someone else s life or ruin it forever. "From the Hardcover edition.""

DNF‘d: So, I got 25% in and I was really feeling weighed down that the adults in his life are aware he is drinking to excess and not doing anything. He obviously has Avery Rocky life that brought on his drinking problem. I skipped to the last 3 chapters to see his g/f is just letting it happen, and people at a bar just let him drink too even though he‘s under age. I felt for Sutter, and I know this is a very likely story it was just too sad.

I‘m not sure how I feel about this… the rating and description make it sound amazing. However, the book so far is our main character being constantly drunk as a teen, driving drunk, and having sex. Hmmm… Has anyone read this to convince me to keep going?

AkashaVampie Have u seen the movie?? 3y
Roary47 @AkashaVampie I have not. I understand it might be a sad ending, but is there a plot other than just teen drinking and ditching school. Not a fan as a high school teacher. 3y
AkashaVampie @Roary47 I don't remember, but do remember liking it. 3y
Roary47 @AkashaVampie that does help. Thank you! 😊 3y

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new. Don‘t judge me - I have a lot of books. Join the fun if you want.

My entry for #spectacular I read this a little over a year ago (January 2016) I believe. Was an ok read.

I don't post about books on Twitter too much anymore since I've found my home here at Litsy, but some of my old tweets crack me up. 😂 And I definitely remember posting this about The Spectacular Now... which was really less than spectacular. Also, it took me nearly a month to read it and I ended up disliking it. Hate when that happens.

BookBabe 😂😂😂👌🏻 I saw a few parallels between my HS life and Girls on Fire...but none of the really bad parts lol 7y
Purrfectpages Always love the genre, but I totally get what you're saying! 7y
L_auren Interesting!! I feel like so many of them transport me right back. And if not to my own experiences to a friend's at the time. 7y

I could talk about my obvious problem with buying books, talking about books, looking up books, and reading books. but I'm just going to call all of that a lifestyle choice. 😳

Instead, here are some books I've read with characters suffering from their own addictions - of the substance abuse variety. I was not crazy about The Girl on the Train or The Spectacular Now, but I loved Trainspotting and Brideshead Revisited.

keithmalek Have you read Irvine Welsh's "The Sex Lives of Cannibals"? I highly recommend it! 7y
sprainedbrain @keithmalek I haven't, but it's on my tbr. I will move it up! 7y
stargazerblue49 I always wanted to get into Welsh when I was in high school, but he used the C-word too much for me. 7y

JaclynW Have you watched the two Trainspotting movies? The first one is a favorite of mine. The second one came out recently. 7y

Lyric, "Smooth like Barry and his voice got bass" Well, the MC in this book is definitely smooth. And when he comes home he'd definitely be "relaxed with Pep". He also "dresses like a dapper don, but even in jeans". Basically fits most of my favorite lyrics in #WhattaMan And, yes, I sing along loud with this one. #90sinJuly

Notafraidofwords I loved both the movie and the book! 7y
Cinfhen Nicely played 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻💕 7y

I don't know why, but YA felt like a guilty pleasure for a while. Perks of being a wallflower and anything by John Green had me reading again, after college. One of my favourites was this one though! The soundtrack (to the film) is a good listen too. #marchintoreading #timtharp #ya #guiltypleasure

Centique I watched the film a few days ago and thought it was really good. Looks like I should try the book too 😊 8y
AlexMay @Centique you should! The book has a slightly different tone and I'd say I preferred it. 👍 8y

Eh. The narration is great, but it's really hard to like/empathize with the MC. I get all the weaving of the plot, and I feel like I should like it, but I just don't. It's not bad, I just don't love it. #publishedinthe2000s #readjanuary

Also Brie Larson is supposed to play the fat, curvy girlfriend in the movie. Yeah, right. 🙄🙄🙄🙄

josie281 Ummm no. She's lovely but not the fit 8y
Megabooks @josie281 @Laura317 Yes. Lovely, great actress, but I wish they had followed the book. 8y

melrailey I felt the same way. This book wasn't bad but it just didn't do it for me. I had a hard time liking the MC. 8y
Notafraidofwords I really liked both the book and the movie which hardly ever happens. 8y
Joybishoptx See this was the problem I had with Girl on the Train. Hollywood thinwashing.... 8y
Megabooks @melrailey Yes, I found him very unlikable. 8y
Megabooks @Notafraidofwords hmmm...I'm glad you enjoyed it!! 8y
Megabooks @Joybishoptx I tried to watch the movie but I didn't like it. 8y
Joybishoptx @Ebooksandcooks I didn't either. And I loved the book. 8y

Okay, so maybe reading two difficult books at once was too much. Missoula has me pissed the F off, and The Orphan Master's son is heartbreaking, so I started this in the shower. I try not to do three books at once, but I plead temporary bookish insanity! I need something easy!! Plus, I love this narrator's drawl. 🤠

Joybishoptx Sometimes you need an escape. Totally understand 8y

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I have a soft spot for this novel, as it is definitely reminiscent of a past relationship of mine in high school. The popular, living in the moment guy builds a relationship with the shy, ordinary girl.

Definitely a book that will stay with me

I couldn't put this book down. It's truly captivating. Sutter is very relatable and his struggles are realistic. Overall a very enjoyable read 😊 I see more books by Tharp being read in my future😊

I love this book! Sutter Keely is one of the most fascinating, enjoyable & heartbreaking characters. The ending is also one of my personal favourites. The book is infinitely quotable AND the movie version? Well, it's actually phenomenal. Read the book, then watch the movie...then read the book again

For a long time I wasn't sure what I loved about this book. But the characters are so real and their emotions so raw that it is not hard to connect and fall in love with them.
