From Tamora Pierce, the second book in the Song of the Lioness Quartet, honored with the Margaret A. Edwards Award. Alanna, disguised as a boy, becomes a squire to none other than the heir to the throne. Prince Jonathan is not only Alanna's liege lord, he is also her best friend--and one of the few who knows the secret of her true identity. But when a vicious sorcerer threatens the prince's life, it will take all of Alanna's skill, strength, and magical power to protect him, even at the risk of surrendering her dreams...

So many of Alannas most important things appear in this book! Her cat, her ember, her sword. Both her great loves and the first war she sees and the first time she really starts to use her gift for something good. A fantastic start to her adulthood and end to her youth happen here 💙💚💜

The second book in the series, Alanna has now showed readers that being feminine does not equal being weak. We finally get a satisfying piece of romance, and Alanna grows stronger in the face of continuing adversary. Her character inspires me and makes me feel strong just reading her! Can't wait to continue down her journey.

This second book in the Song of the Lioness quartet is just as delightful as the first! In addition to her beautiful steed Moonlight, magical sword Lightning, Alanna receives an amulet from a Goddess and the loyalty of a violet-eyed cat named Faithful—she becomes a squire, fights a war, faces the Ordeal of Knighthood, and duels an evil wizard—AND things get spicy with both the crown prince and the king of thieves vying for her attention.

⭐️⭐️💫A fun continuation of the series, but not as strong as book 1. I do think this one suffers under a current reading because what it does has been done so often in this genre. Maybe Pierce was the first to do it, but reading this book now & not in 1984, I‘ve read these plot points before. The Ordeal at the end of the book is *very* similar to the fear simulation in Divergent. I am still looking forward to seeing how the series continues!

Ahh, still really enjoying the story even though I know what‘s in store for everyone 😬. My favourite moment in this one was probably Alanna getting busted in a dress!

Prince Jonathan shows his annoying side in this book - it‘s still mostly balanced out by all the other stuff he does but 🙄

My newest book actually came in the mail today! Lol, the timing! #BookMailIsBestMail I already had Alanna, the 1st in the series, from a book signing last year. And I bought the other three with my Christmas gift cards. Unfortunately, two of them came in a gloss finish while the others are matte, and they have completely different bindings. Anyone know how I can find these in matte?
@Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @vkois88

vkois88 I don't, I'm sorry... but beautiful and I LOVE the cover 😍😍😍 6y
Lizpixie I have the same problem with a few series, especially my Phryne Fisher books. I‘ve even gone into book details to check publisher, country, book size etc and I‘ve still ended up with some glossy & some that slippery matte🤷🏻‍♀️ 6y
the.bookish.valkyrie @vkois88 Yeah, I was on the phone with B&N, for something like half an hour, trying to figure it out. They had nothing for me. I know it‘s nit picky, and I try not to be “that person”, but #BookNerdProblems! 😂📚🤓 I thanked the girl for her effort and accepted defeat. This post was mostly a shot in the dark. But thank you! @Lizpixie It might make me a bit of a jerk, but, I do feel a *little* better knowing that I‘m not alone with this problem.😘 6y

A great quick read as we get to see Alanna realize her goal of becoming the first woman knight of Tortall in a hundred years. We also see her come to terms with being a woman, & we find whether it really matters to those who know her. She also faces her enemy, the Duke of Conte, in many small ways before a final face off to save those she loves. I‘m really liking this series 💜

[#BookReview] In The Hand of the Goddess by Tamora Pierce. I loved this book just as much as I loved the first one! The characters are so charming and the writing is brilliant. I cannot wait to continue with the quartet and then the other spin offs in this world.

1. Probably Secrets, from Pink's Beautiful Trauma CD. It has a da da da da do do do thing going on and my kids love to hear it!
2. Definitely a 5!
3. I don't know if Les Miserables or The Count of Monte Cristo is longer, but I've read them both. Unabridged. 1000+ pages to both.

EclecticBookLover That's my favorite book in the Alanna series. In addition to re-reading the books many times I also listened to them and I loved Trini Alvarado's narration! 7y
jwashreads @EclecticBookLover I'm ony 45 minutes in, but it's great so far. And I'm loving this mysterious, purple eyed cat! 7y

Reading-In-The-Wings I can‘t believe I haven‘t read any Tamora pierce books yet..... I need to get on that. 7y
jwashreads @Reading-In-The-Wings DOOOO IIIITTTT *in my most hypnotizing voice* 😉 7y
Reading-In-The-Wings @jwashreads which should I read first? What will be the best introduction? 7y
jwashreads @Reading-In-The-Wings since I'm reading them for the first time, I may not be the best one to turn to for advice, but I read Tempests and Slaughter first, which just came out. It was my introduction to the world, and it's more evolved in the way YA is today. It eased me into the world so to speak--made me excited about it. So that one. Or Alanna, the first in the entire series 😉 7y
Reading-In-The-Wings @jwashreads amazing!! Thanks!! 7y

Seriously, I can‘t believe it‘s been over a year since I reread all of Tamora Pierce... now I can‘t stop! Debating starting book 3 or going to sleep...it takes me around 2 hours to read one of these so if I start it now I will be done around 11pm...ahhhh the troubles of a bibliophile! What‘s a good name for an Uber Tamora Pierce fan????

I reread this entire series this week, and I love how quickly this book moves the series along. And who doesn‘t love an awesome, talking, cat? Makes me miss my own kitty who ran away and hasn‘t come home....anyway, this is a great series, a nice fast read and the characters grow and develop as people. I always suggest this series when I meet tweens and young teens readers looking for fantasy books, but I enjoy them as an adult still

TricksyTails Oh no!! I'm so sorry to hear about your kitty. I hope your kitty comes home soon. 🐱♥️ 7y
TricksyTails Also, love all your Pikachu! ♥️ 7y
iread2much @TricksyTails thanks. He‘s really old, 12 or so, so he might have died outside. He was a rescued feral, so outside is where he loves to be...but we are waiting to see if he comes home in the next few months before we consider another cat. 7y

iread2much @TricksyTails why thank you! I love how pikachu was such a jerk in the beginning of the series. It always made me laugh 😆 7y
TricksyTails Is this the kitty that's in your earlier photos? Ugh. That makes me so sad. I hope he's okay. Yes, Pikachu was a lovable jerk! 😆 7y
iread2much @TricksyTails thanks, we do too. Sometimes. He was a serious asshole cat, but we loved him. 7y

The intensity (and my anxiety) increases the older Alanna gets and the closer she is to becoming a knight and revealing her gender to all. I'm really interested to see where things go from here. With a major villain now gone I wonder who her next big adversary will be!

I am pretty satisfied with where this book leaves off so I'm taking a short Alanna break to dip into some other titles on my TBR. I'll be back for her soon!

CatLadyBibliophile Oooh I need to look into this one, I love Tamora! 8y
MarriedtoMrT @CatLadyBibliophile Have you read Alanna yet? If not, make sure you read that one first. Alanna and this one have been my first Tamora Pierce books and I'm hooked! 8y
Chachic You have a lot of Tamora Pierce reading ahead of you! 8y
MarriedtoMrT @Chachic I do! It will be good to have an author I know is solid on my TBR for the next several years (or longer). 8y
Chachic I know, I need to catch up on reading her books. I haven't finished all of them. 8y

Me when my Song of the Lioness boxset arrived before noon this Sunday morning. Bless you, Amazon Prime, even though I often feel guilty for using you. I have already cleaned the bathroom and folded a bit of laundry this morning so that means I can spend the rest of the day reading, right? On recommendation I started In the Hand of the Goddess on audio last night and it was great but I'll probably read the print because it's faster.

Emory Was thinking about rereading the Tortall books all week and now I'm convinced that this needs to happen. Enjoy! 8y

Boy have I had a lot of #literarycrush s in my day, but for #feistyfeb Day 11 I felt I had to go with one of my earliest and strongest, Prince Jon from the Song of the Lioness series! I mean, yes, I was into all the guys in that universe, but it always started with the prince, obvi.

Book 2/4. Continuing to adore this series. Alanna is a wonderful heroine, and this story is a little more adult than the previous one. Follows Alanna from the ages of 15-18. I wish the book didn't rush over parts of Alanna's life, but for 209 pages, I felt like we got a lot of content. On to the next one!
