When Reuben finds that the watch has the power to turn him invisible, he's propelled on the adventure of a lifetime. Now Reuben is being pursued by a group of dangerous men called the Directions, and someone--or "something"--ominously called The Smoke. They all want the watch, and with the help of new friends, it's up to Reuben to unravel the mysteries surrounding it and protect the city from evil."New York Times "bestselling author Trenton Lee Stewart's latest novel will enthrall old and new fans alike with the twists and turns of an inventive and compelling adventure reminiscent of The Mysterious Benedict Society series.

Wait, how did the Windowsill of Optimism get so full??? ? So I "have" to read every book from the skinny Mystery by Moonlight to the left by the end of the month. The rest are all just bonus books. So that's doable, right?? My pace should definitely pick up when I am done reading Time Traveler's Guide to Regency Britain - only a chapter a day of that one but the chapters are huuuuge. However, there are only 12 of them, so there's that haha ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) Currently also reading, a chapter-a-day-ish... Little House on the Prairie, Middlemarch, Brave New World, and Anne of Manhattan. So the official #WeeklyForecast is to continue with those reads, finish the tagged book, and check off at least three more. My husband is off work this week, though, and has this wild idea that we're going to hike 50 miles throughout the week!! So far we have accomplished almost 5 miles, so I'm not suuuper ⬇ 2y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) confident, but maybe!!!

Cinfhen 50 miles!???! Sounds like the Hike of optimism has met the windowsill 😘 (edited) 2y
Bookzombie Wow, 50 miles!?!? 2y
TheAromaofBooks @Cinfhen @Bookzombie - Well, I'm not super confident. Other plans already seem to be interfering with accomplishing this goal 😂 2y
Cinfhen Just enjoy 😊 happy reading and hiking 😍 2y

#BookReport this week - checked off three small books last weekend, and then read the next Temeraire book throughout most of the week. I started the tagged book yesterday and am quite enjoying it. However, I just couldn't get into Willow Frost and finally decided to send it back to the library. I'm just not feeling depressing historical fiction right now 😂 February added to my chapter-a-day reads, including The Time Traveler's Guide to Regency ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) Britain, which has HUGE chapters so it's kind of bogging down my daily reading, despite finding it interesting. Still plowing through Middlemarch, participating in the Little House readalong, and then I've started my February #BookSpin read, which is Brave New World - somehow, I've never read it!!! I'm also reading the #KindredSpiritsBuddyRead, Anne of Manhattan. Jury is still out on that one - is it ridiculous that I'm oddly annoyed ⬇ 2y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) that Anne is described as being the “shortest of her friends“ while Diana is now tall & thin, literally the opposite of their descriptions in the original?? Probably petty of me 😂

Anyway, somehow I've also added LOADS of books to the windowsill this week - #TrappedonanIsland picks & #LMPBC plus a book I got from a publisher for review - so tomorrow's picture is already looking a little jammed!!

@Cinfhen - Hope your trip has been fab!😁
2y
rabbitprincess I love your windowsill pics! So satisfying to see books being checked off and so fun to see the new shelves every week 😄 2y

Cinfhen My trip has been AMAZING but I‘m ready to be home!!! Almost there 😅 2y
Cinfhen Love the windowsill of opportunities 🤩 2y
TheAromaofBooks @rabbitprincess - Thank you!!! I started this system last year and it has worked SO well for me. No more wondering what the next book should be!! 2y
TheAromaofBooks @Cinfhen - Yay for happy vacations!!!! We've been contemplating where we want to go this summer. So many choices!!! 2y
BarbaraJean I don‘t think it‘s ridiculous to be annoyed that Anne is described as short! (Maybe petty but not ridiculous 😂) Anne is supposed to be tall and slim! And then there‘s some comment in Anne of Avonlea about how fat Diana has gotten, and she‘s like 120 lbs or something 🙄 It would be nice to see similar physical attributes but described without the unreasonable fat-shaming! 2y

I enjoy the front cover and how each window of the lighthouse has a different silhouette in them. Plus the waves of the ocean look as if they are swallowing the lighthouse.

The Secret Keepers by Trenton Lee Stewart published in 2016 is a journey. The antique watch takes many twists and turns that I think children would enjoy.

This was delightful. I wish it had been a series and it wasn't quite as lovely twisty-turny as The Mysterious Benedict Society- but I still thoroughly enjoyed it.

If you like this genre and you liked TMBS you'll enjoy this one. If you haven't read TMBS what is wrong with you? What are you waiting for? Go read it!

TheLondonBookworm Loooooove these- I've faced them all out in my kids section at work (bookshop) they're selling like crazy! 7y
Peddler410 I have this waiting for me on my bookshelf! And I loved TMBS -- but I've only read the first book 😕 7y
LibrarianRyan Hey hey, it's in my TBR. I'll get to it eventually. 😜 7y

Laalaleighh @TheLondonBookworm awww I love that these are selling well! They are exactly what I wish I could have read as a kid! 7y
Laalaleighh @Peddler410 you have to do the whole series! And the prequel. I think the prequel is my fave. 7y
Laalaleighh @LibrarianRyan according to some app I will finish my current TBR in the year 2026. 😂 7y
LibrarianRyan @Laalaleighh I've seen that app. Mine was like 2078 or something like that. I'll probably be dead. 🙂 7y
Laalaleighh @LibrarianRyan courage dear heart. Even the most intimidating of TBRs can be conquered. 7y

@DebinHawaii this passage immediately made me think of you and all your wonderful book and recipe pairings. It seemed like something that might resonate with you.

If you ever decide you want to read this middle grade book- please make Cullen Skink with it haha! 💙✨

DebinHawaii Hah! Thanks for thinking of me. 💜I thought about making Cullen skink for The Bookshop on the Corner but ended up with another dish so maybe I'll have to read this one and make it! 😋🍴 7y

✨Thank you to everyone that commented with book suggestions for me yesterday! You're all wonderful & I 💙 you to pieces! I ordered quite a few recommendations tonight! I was walking around my B&N today, noticing how terrible they are at keeping their backlist stocked, when I saw this beauty & knew immediately what I was reading in the mean time! I loved his previous series and sometimes middle grade fantasy is like hot tea(or cocoa) for the soul✨

Reuben's solitary life of urban exploration gets a lot more complicated when he finds an old pocket watch with surprising properties. Suddenly government agents are looking for him, a family of lighthouse keepers are the only ones with answers, and Reuben realizes that his newfound watch comes with great responsibility—and danger.

With a typical TLS trail of clues, this is one that kid detectives, and adults who wish they were, would enjoy.

I completely fell in love with this book. There wasn't a stone left unturned; every detail falls into place in the most unexpected ways. The characters were remarkably real, and while they were vastly different, they fit together in the quirkiest of ways. Not only did I feel as if I knew these characters, but I also felt known by them. Trenton Lee Stewart, I thank you for this message. It was beautifully written, and one I needed to hear.

" 'Yes indeed,' he said. 'Things are getting brighter, aren't they young Pedley?'
'Yes, sir,' said Reuben, still grinning. 'Yes, sir. I think they are.' "

"And with that, he let go of his very last secret, the one he'd been trying to keep from himself. He let go of the thing he had wanted with all his heart to hold on to."

The Secret Keepers | Trenton Lee Stewart

"It was as if she were being rewarded for having resolved to do the right thing, no matter the cost. It was a very strange and good feeling, she thought, as she picked up the phone. To feel happy despite being afraid."

quote
ellieproctor
The Secret Keepers | Trenton Lee Stewart

"From the boat the shoals were invisible--as was almost everything else beneath the water's surface. The ocean was the greatest secret keeper of all. Some of its secrets, like the hidden shoals, could be discovered, but most would never be known. Thousands upon thousands might be revealed, yet there would always be more that remained hidden. The ocean was probably the most mysterious thing in the world, Reuben thought, except for a person."

"If you weren't afraid, what might you do *now*?"

This seems like a good one to hold on to -- what could you do, or *should* you do, if you refuse to let fear hold you back?

As a rabid MBS fan, I ate this one up. Trenton Lee Stewart at his best. I love Rueben and his mother, along with their coping mechanisms, and I'd move in with the Meyers if I could.
