Today I installed a lamp for night reading and tonight I am taking full advantage! Got to get my Matilda Middle Grade Book Club read finished for tomorrow.

Centique My kids love David Walliams so much. Saw him speak at a writers festival and he was so funny and in tune with kids. Hope lots of American kids get to know his work too 😍 7y
quirkyreader I loved him in Little Britain and Mr. Stink. 7y

Perfect book to read in a cabin by the lake. Perfect reading anywhere- Gertie is equal parts strong and vulnerable, you will be rooting for her from page one.

Oh Hilda, how I love her. She reads books about rocks, she hangs bells on troll noses, she jumps on furry floaty things to get around. She befriends the creature that lives in the wasted space between your bookshelf and your wall. She is curious, adventurous and this blue-haired girl has captured my heart. A graphic novel series with a picture book trim size.

angrylilasian I love Hilda! Where did you get the adorable figure?! 7y

I was listening to The Yarn podcast, and they describe the scene in This One Summer where Windy is krunking, so I had to pull it out again. Yup, totally brilliant.

This is a preemptive pick as I have not technically finished it, but I am really loving it so far. I did not expect a book about crafting and cats to have me crying all the cries, but here we are. Perfect snuggly Sunday reading.

CuriousTeeth Update: Finished! Absolutely still a pick. 7y

A weird and wonderful book about a family of obsessive list-makers. The illustrations are lush and atmospheric, the characters are eccentric and detailed. Good for adult coffee tables and children's bookshelves alike.

Centique Sounds like I might be descended from this family. So many lists! 7y

This month's pick for The Matilda Middle Grade Book Club. This is maybe my favourite book of all time, about a brother and a sister who run away from home and go live in The Met. I read it every year. Do you have a book that is "that book"?

youngreadrshelf I read that and Harriet the Spy over and over again! 8y
Pandyfish I LOVE The Mixed-Up Files so much! It's a comfort book:) (That and Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson) 8y

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina | Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa

There are very good, very interesting things happening at Archie Comics right now. Chip Zdarsky is writing Jughead. I can't wait to dig into this one. Who knew?

StephBengtson Sabrina is so good! I'm loving all the new Archie comics! 8y
BekahB This was excellent! Even though I've read Afterlife with Archie, it was still much darker than I thought it would be. I'm excited for the next volume. 8y
CuriousTeeth @StephBengtson I love Archie and the first Jughead bind up was pretty good. I will dig in! I'm just a little worried that is will be just dark. I like stuff the is stuff funny too. 8y

CuriousTeeth @BekahB but is there still some funny ie Buffy? I'm worried that is just going to be dark and serious. 8y
BekahB @CuriousTeeth Yikes. This one really isn't funny. There are a few moments of dry sarcasm from Salem the cat but it's closer to straight-up horror. Afterlife with Archie had more of a funny-ish Evil Dead type humor. I would agree with the trade paperback's introduction and say that in tone this was more like Rosemary's Baby or The Omen. It's very good, but not snarky or kitschy like Buffy. Closer to the comic book series Wytches or Harrow County. 8y
CuriousTeeth @BekahB ahhhh, good to know. Not for the kiddies! 8y

I recently recommended this book on the September Canadian Children's Book Center newsletter. It's very different from the typical zany middle grade offering and I really loved it! --- This book is short, sweet, and terribly perfect. A very focused and tight study of that mind-shaking moment when a new friendship changes your entire worldview. Reminiscent of Rainbow Rowell‘s Eleanor & Park, but for a younger reader.

So this book isn't in the database so I had to pick another one by the same illustrator. How do you add a book to the list? In any case, Rose a Petit Pois is a lyrical story from Quebec's always impressive publisher La Pasteque. Quiet, simple, emotional - it reminds me of the movie Amelie. Lovely for a specific kind of kid.

I find really beautiful early readers difficult to come across, so this trilogy was a real prize. Like the first two, it follows along the same story structure as Dr.Seuss's And To Think That I Saw It On Mulberry Street. The illustration is vintage inspired, but with a modern feeling and the design is great.

This is one of the best cookbooks I have ever used. It's genuinely easy to follow the recipes. I've learned a lot about an ingredients and cooking techniques I can apply to the way I cook and eat, not just to the specific meals inside. I haven't even made 1/3 of the recipes yet but every single one is a winner so far.

Another great non-fiction reference-style book from Flying Eye Books. Each animal gets it's own spread and brief description but the art is what will win you over - so lush and dynamic. A lovely book for a curious kid.
