pickFictional memoir of a boyhood in a coal mining community in early-20th century Wales. The narrator fondly remembers his home and family, but also hardships like labor strikes, starvation, bigotry, and depredations of the coal industry. For hardships he reaches for an ambiguous tone that often feels like sugarcoating. But the prose is nice and the characters well drawn. I'm generally not a fan of this genre, but this one annoyed me less than most.
#AGameOfFavorites Day 10: Author from a different Country than you. I picked Richard Llewelyn. I don‘t think I had ever read a book set in Wales before this novel. If I did, it clearly wasn‘t memorable. But THIS novel, I adored. I couldn‘t find anything about his fave book, BUT fun fact: it came out after his death that he wasn‘t born in West Wales, like he claimed. He was actually born in Hendon, Middlesex, England to Welsh parents.😊

I loved the narration and the vividly drawn characters, although I can definitely see where it might be considered romanticized or sentimental. But as a picture of a particular time and place, I liked it.

pickMost Popular Book of 1940. What a lovely coming-of-age tale. This novel is about Huw Morgan (and his family), who lives in a coal-mining village in South Wales. I think it's set during the late-1800s, since they talk about an older Queen Victoria. Such a heartwarming and heart-rending tale about a coal miners life, with its painful truths. Some parts are a bit long-winded but overall I really enjoyed the characters and their story.
Favorite Characters Award goes to: the sarcastic, bad-ass, brawling prize-fighters Dai Bando and Cyfartha (kuh-varr-tha)!

How Green Was My Valley is my first audiobook. I don't want the book to end, but I want to know what happens. The Welsh family by the name of Morgan has a special place in my headphones ( and ❤️)

Have you any books you read that you simply can't remember anything about? I read a lot on my own growing up, but also went to a high school that really pushed literature. (Forever grateful for that btw...) I know that I read How Green Was My Valley as well as Wuthering Heights - and I haven't the faintest memory of either. Anyone else have that happen?
pickThis book tells of a Welsh coal mining family. This look into days gone by gives you a definite appreciation for modern life. The love of family shines through. My dad's favorite movie was based on this book. That alone piqued my interest. It's time for a re-read.
