Mehso-so

This is both a sick work and a striking set of cultural contrasts. Faulkner, back in regular prose, has his town college graduates show off to drunken rum runners with loaded guns and opaque complex minds. It‘s weird and creepy in an interesting way. But like that movie, the story of Temple Drake is most memorable, but not in a good way. And it‘s really disturbing that Faulkner wrote it as he did. Some kind of trigger warning applies.

Sanctuary is kind of like if Faulkner and John Grisham got together to write about some horrific events ending in a trial in a small southern town. Don't hang out with moonshiners, kids.

Reagan 😂 Love the review. Stacked! 5y
Hooked_on_books Your review is awesome 😆 5y
Reggie Is this part of the class your taking from the Faulkner specialist? 5y
ReadingEnvy @Reggie yes, I don't think I could attempt more than that at the same time 5y

This is my first Faulkner. I just started it. I bought it because it was the cheapest. I'm hoping it's good. Has anyone read it? Thoughts?

jenmoody23 Never read this one, but The Reivers is great. I need more Faulkner in my life. 7y
Emilymdxn I just read my first ever faulkner recently and really enjoyed it! I haven‘t read this one but I hope you get into him too! 7y
Insightsintobooks @jenmoody23 thanks for the recommendation. 7y

This one is rough. I loved As I Lay Dying, The Town books, The Sound and the Fury, and others, but this one is not gripping me with the language for some reason. I have about a third of it left though.

#TBT to the summer of 2014, when I had the honor of going to the Faulkner Conference in Oxford, MS. This photo is on the upper porch of Square Books, one of the most relaxing places I've visited. And it shows off a few of my many journals. (More to come...) #throwbackthursday

[DELETED] 3323341091 Sanctuary is my favorite of his works. 8y
BookishFeminist This looks wonderfully serene. Also I learned something: there's a Faulkner Conference, lol 8y
Titania Square Books is my favorite bookstore ever. (Sorry, Powells! You're second! ;-) ) Always a must stop when we're in Oxford. 8y
ForestAvenuePress Amazing bookstore! I only was there once but it's on my to-return list. 8y

Pickpick

Disturbing but strangely beautiful, and in places equal parts insightful and hilarious. Faulkner has a remarkable knack for capturing people and places and knowing just how to baffle a reader without putting them off completely.

This funeral scene is the funniest thing I've read in years.
