The Winter Crown
The Winter Crown: A Novel of Eleanor of Aquitaine | Elizabeth Chadwick
25 posts | 23 read | 45 to read
As Queen of England, Eleanor has a new cast of enemiesincluding the king. Eleanor has more than fulfilled her duty as Queen of England-she has given her husband, Henry II, heirs to the throne and has proven herself as a mother and ruler. But Eleanor needs more than to be a bearer of children and a deputy; she needs command of the throne. As her children grow older, and her relationship with Henry suffers from scandal and infidelity, Eleanor realizes the power she seeks won't be given willingly. She must take it for herself. But even a queen must face the consequences of treason... In this long-anticipated second novel in the Eleanor of Aquitaine trilogy, bestselling author Elizabeth Chadwick evokes a royal marriage where love and hatred are intertwined, and the battle over power is fought not with swords, but deception.

I read the first book of Chadwick‘s Eleanor of Aquitaine trilogy, The Summer Queen, last July, so I figured I better continue the seasonally-appropriate trend. This one wasn‘t quite as exciting as the first one as Eleanor spends much of the book pregnant or having just birthed a child and thus isn‘t quite as involved in the political intrigue. I still enjoyed it and am looking forward to reading the third book in the fall.

This second instalment wasn‘t quite as good as the first if you ask me but still a great read! Medieval setting, cracking writing, lots of interesting characters and it‘s fast paced! I do enjoy getting lost in Eleanor‘s world! 😊

TrishB I think the last is probably the best 👍🏻 5y
Cathythoughts I loved this series! Thanks to @TrishB 👍🏻❤️ 5y
AlaMich I like that cover! Of course it‘s nicer than the US version. (edited) 5y

It's taken me MONTHS to finish to this! Partly just because life's been doing its thing, but also, because it's based on fact, the story flows on and on, so I've been dipping in and out like a soap opera, rather than audio page-turning to see what happens next. Still enjoyed it, will definitely be reading part 3, but I might switch to print.

And can anyone tell me what curling one's lip signifies? There is a LOT of lip-curling in this book!

LeeRHarry To me curling your lip means you find something thoroughly distasteful 😒😏 6y
rockpools @LeeRHarry That fits! I wonder if it's a particularly 12th century mannerism/expression. 6y

bookandcat @Caroline2 sadly I'm in the US and already have it from Book of the Month club! Which you just reminded me - I completely missed adding my nonfiction books to my #botmbacklog challenge stack 😂 I swear the UK always gets the best covers 😂 see US vs UK: 6y
Caroline2 @bookandcat It‘s crazy how different the UK vs USA covers can be isn‘t it?! I often think the US versions are better! 😆 6y
bookandcat @Caroline2 grass is greener on the other side I guess! 🤣🤣 They always have such different designs! 6y
Caroline2 @bookandcat yeah, I wonder why they are so different?! 🤔 I imagine US and UK markets being kinda similar?! 🤷‍♀️ 6y
bookandcat @Caroline2 I have no idea! Something to do with publishing rights, perhaps? 6y
laurieluna I was looking at the winter crown! But I thought it was 3rd in a trilogy? Great bargains. 6y
Caroline2 @miralunasbooknook Yeah it‘s a trilogy but I think it‘s the 2nd book. The first book is The Summer Queen, which is really good! It‘s also only Qa on Amazon at the mo! ? 6y

Started #24in48 with an audiobook. I started this months ago, but it's such a big epic story, I actually find it really easy to dip in and out of.

Being a complete lightweight, I'm aiming for 12 hours (which would totally beat any previous readathons...)

I've never been a huge series-reader, but it turns out, when it comes to audio, #thatswhatilike. Spent a full 24 hours debating whether this month's credit should go on Alienor & Henry or Cormoran & Robin. I decided Alienor will be more help with packing and sorting new wifi, so she's on board for the weekend. Pretty sure Cormoran was still living out of boxes from 2 books ago when I left him, so he's probably not the best example! #getmovin

Cathythoughts Oh I loved this one. Great way to pack up. Audio packing 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻Sounds like you found somewhere ... congratulations 👍🏻💕 6y

batsy Sounds like a great read 💙 (Btw, I sent you a package after our emails and according to tracking it reached Dublin on Feb 28. Wondering why it hasn't yet made its way to Cork 😥 Maybe it was the recent weather upsets?) 6y
erzascarletbookgasm I love historical fictions but I‘ve yet to try a 👑🤴👸 read. This trilogy sounds good. 6y
Cathythoughts @batsy thankyou, you are very good. Please don‘t worry, for some reason, parcels seem to take forever to get here. And the post office was closed during the snow. I think sometimes the parcel comes here & then goes back to someplace in Europe & The comes back here again. 🤷‍♀️. I really don‘t get it. But it will get here & I will post immediately 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 Thankyou ✨ 6y
Cathythoughts @erzascarletbookgasm yes, it‘s my first experience of historical fiction & I am so grateful to @TrishB for her recommendation , I really do love it & see it as being a constant in my reading now. There is a magic about it all. A long , long , time ago...... ❤️ I would give it go 👍🏻👍🏻 I love the life in the court part &( sorry text went too soon ) and the time 12th century & the full regalia 👑 (edited) 6y
Cathythoughts @DGRachel I hope you give them a go soon 👍🏻. I ❤️ them 6y

I'm sad to say I'm done and only this far into the book. Unlike all her other books I've read, all the action is taking place somewhere off the pages and each chapter is a very short synopsis of whatever that action was (Henry is home from a battle) and a brief recap of how Eleanor feels about it, which is about the same over and over again. It is so dull I do anything to avoid reading it. No thank you. ☹️
