A Reader's Book of Days
A Reader's Book of Days: True Tales from the Lives and Works of Writers for Every Day of the Year | Tom Nissley
20 posts | 3 read | 15 to read
At once a love letter to literature and a charming guide to the books most worth reading, A Reader's Book of Days features bite-size accounts of events in the lives of great authors for every day of the year. Here is Marcel Proust starting In Search of Lost Time and Virginia Woolf scribbling in the margin of her own writing, "Is it nonsense, or is it brilliance?" Fictional events that take place within beloved books are also included: the birth of Harry Potters enemy Draco Malfoy, the blood-soaked prom in Stephen Kings Carrie. A Reader's Book of Days is filled with memorable and surprising tales from the lives and works of Martin Amis, Jane Austen, James Baldwin, Roberto Bolano, the Bront sisters, Junot Daz, Philip K. Dick, Charles Dickens, Joan Didion, F. Scott Fitzgerald, John Keats, Hilary Mantel, Haruki Murakami, Flannery OConnor, Orhan Pamuk, George Plimpton, Marilynne Robinson, W. G. Sebald, Dr. Seuss, Zadie Smith, Susan Sontag, Hunter S. Thompson, Leo Tolstoy, David Foster Wallace, and many more. The book also notes the days on which famous authors were born and died; it includes lists of recommended reading for every month of the year as well as snippets from book reviews as they appeared across literary history; and throughout there are wry illustrations by acclaimed artist Joanna Neborsky. Brimming with nearly 2,000 stories, A Reader's Book of Days will have readers of every stripe reaching for their favorite books and discovering new ones.

Clearly, a great amount of research was put into this book. I read through most of January, looked up my own birthday in September, and decided to call it quits. I will eventually read most of this book but I plan on using it more as a reference book then something I would read cover to cover.

I am officially turning in for the night, having read 90 pages of my #1001BookSwap #SEAReaders **supersecret** chunkster of a novel tonight. This is not counting the 90 minutes earlier before the #readathon officially started. I am glad that the #readathon #deweysreadathon has given me the perfect excuse to just curl up and read read read. Distinct possibility that I will finish this tomorrow. :)

Jprglisa Great job! It is the perfect excuse to read all day! 7y

Borrowed from the terrific @booklova007 :

How did you celebrate #WorldBookDay2018?! 😁 #BookTalk

MissAimz_55 Was it yesterday the 23rd? If so I celebrated it perfectly! I am traveling for work and I'm in Nottingham England . I went to waterstones (book store) here and explored the amazingness of it! I also read at a gin bar 7y

I don‘t always remember to keep up with my copy of A Reader‘s Book of Days...but today I did, and learned that John Belushi was being considered for the role of Ignatius in a Confederacy of Dunces movie (still haven‘t been made!) just before he OD‘ed on tomorrow‘s date in 1982. Thought I‘d share for my friends doing/having done the #dunces readalong!

BarbaraBB That is interesting. He would have made a good Ignatius although in my mind Ignatius doesn‘t look a bit like John Belushi! Thanks for sharing! 7y
britt_brooke Thanks for sharing! 7y
batsy Thanks for this. I just finished the book. So good, and I can't imagine anyone in the role—as a character, he's just perfect on the page (and in my imagination). 7y
ValerieAndBooks @BarbaraBB @britt_brooke @batsy you‘re all welcome 😊. Yes, I agree Ignatius would be very hard to cast and maybe that‘s one reason why it still hasn‘t been made into a movie. Maybe there are legal issues as well— I wonder who owns the rights to the book? (edited) 7y

In celebration of World Book Day, VisitEngland have produced this gorgeous map - which is your favourite story? Where would you like to go today?
