The Summer Dragon
The Summer Dragon: First Book of the Evertide | Todd Lockwood
The debut novel from the acclaimed illustrator--a high fantasy adventure featuring dragons and deadly politics. Maia and her family raise dragons for the political war machine. As she comes of age, she anticipates a dragon of her own to add to the stable of breeding parents. Her peaceful life is shattered when the Summer Dragon--one of the rare and mythical High Dragons--makes an appearance in her quiet valley. Political factions vie for control of the implied message, threatening her aspirations, her aerie, her entire way of life. The bond between dragons and their riders is deep and life-long, and Maia's desire for a dragon of her own to train, ride, fly, and love drives her to take a risk that puts her life at stake. She is swept into an adventure that pits her against the deathless Horrors, thralls of the enemy, and a faceless creature drawn from her fear. In her fight to preserve everything she knows and loves, she exposes a conspiracy, unearths an ancient civilization, and challenges her understanding of her world--and of herself.

Mehso-so

An ambitious start to the series with a bit of world-building sprinkled here and there. This had a bit of everything but it also felt like it lacked the depth, though that is common for the first book in a series.

The story felt meandering at times and like it was going too fast towards the end. I am hoping the sequel is an improvement.

I loved the illustrations, though. The art was always evocative and beautiful.

It's nice getting back into reading from a few days break

Doppoetry I have 20 pages left of this book which is exciting. 4mo

There is evil and there is just plain stupid. More grown ass men being and acting stupid.

Doppoetry Me a chronic overthinker: Why don't they breed their own dragons. Addai made it clear they have the resources for it. Why do they need the “traditinal“ Aeries? Why do we need “investors“ if the temple can afford bringing in sires or dams and replacing them as they see fit? 5mo
Doppoetry Well, at least I was right about the priest being an unlikely ally. 5mo

I'm doing some cleaning first but I am looking forward to getting through some chapters today.

Meantime I'm listening to one of my favorite Operas :)

📚 Currently reading:

📕 A Clash of Kings - Reading a chapter a day
📕 The Summer Dragon - A Chapter a day.
📙 Lord of The Necropolis - Reading before bed.

Progress:

I struggled a lot this week, but at least I did finish one book! I'm hoping as always next week is better but we'll see. Woke up with a big headache today so I'm not sure about doing any reading today but tomorrow I'll be back on track.

I'm finding the narrative unnecessarily convoluted because no one actually wants to communicate with one another.

So many of the conflicts will be resolved if characters just listened and talked to each other.

Doppoetry The MC feels like a very unreliable narrator but in a way that just confuses the Narrative.

Clearly she does not trust the priest from the ruling temple. But it's written like we have to take her word as law

At the same time it goes against the priest's words and actions.

it's unnecessarily convoluted.
5mo
Doppoetry Clearly this priest has biases but he is also doing his job/following his teachings. Yes he has accused MC of things but only because it goes against his religious beliefs

MC and a few of the other characters treat him like a villain.

While Evil Priest is a trope that's been around for decades I don't think this is it??
5mo
Doppoetry I wonder if he'll turn out to be an unlikely ally

Or the writer will pull the rug from under the reader and be like “actually he controlled the Horrors from the get go“

So far I'm really not sure what we're trying to accomplish here

📚 Currently reading:

📕 A Clash of Kings - Reading a chapter a day
📕 The Summer Dragon - A Chapter a day.
📙 Lord of The Necropolis - Reading before bed.
📙All The Horses of Iceland - reading this from time to time

📚 Progress:

I've been focusing on ACoK and TSD this week. Most of the week it's been okay reading, but some days I couldn't really focus well (I've always been bad with it tbh) Next week I hope to do better.

Things have significantly improved. Adults have brain cells, there is no longer any misogyny (I hope it stays that way) Though I wish this was a bit more plot-focused and not character-focused. It's probably my own preference but I find novels that follow a plot are more cohesive than just character-focused ones.

Even if it has a vague plot it just feels more cohesive and feels like there's “a point“ and “characters are moving towards a goal“

blurb
Doppoetry

Things improved a bit as far as adults growing brain cells and the misogyny, but also I just have a lot of world-building questions again.

If Dragon riding is very important in this world and its economy, why not build dragon saddles that fit the dragon's anatomy instead of mutilating part of their wings every time??

It's a fantasy setting you don't need to put animal cruelty in.

Sometimes the dragons speak and it's the cutest thing.

blurb
Doppoetry

Sometimes the adult characters in this book are a bit too stupid for my taste and it makes me a bit tired. Like, I'm sorry, no one sees that the creepy guy is a creep and is manipulating the situation??? Does no one see that?? just me??

On another note, the trope of “the kids have it all figured out though, the kids with no experience in this particular subject are experts now.“

It's the little things.

Doppoetry

On chapter 23 and I'm finding a lot of these chapters starting to drag, even though they are full of action and moving parts. But also the 'action' and 'moving parts' are becoming very repetitive and the story is slow to progress.

Chapter 8 has gone in a... very concerning direction and it has me a bit worried.

😂😅

Currently I am three chapters into this. So far the writing style is straightforward and approachable, unlike most fantasy I've read where the language tends to be more flowery and dense. (I'm not saying It's a bad thing)

The first-person narrative always catches me off guard since it isn't typically seen in novels.

My friend @Ruthiella suggested that I do a Top Ten list of my favorite books featuring dragons and I loved that idea so much I decided to start right away! 😂🤣 Here is book #10! I love this book because it's thrilling and exciting and I adore the way the dragons are depicted! There are also beautiful illustrations throughout that really add to the whole ambience of the book! 🐉💕📚

Stellar day at Emerald City Comic Con! 🥳 This is just the book/comic haul (it was so hard to stay within budget!). I also bought some other things, got to meet one of my favorite artists, Karen Hallion (who‘s super nice), and had an amazing time people watching. Some of the cosplay costumes were incredible! So much to see & do. Although, I did miss Robin Hobb signing autographs. 😢

Leftcoastzen Wow, wonderful stuff! 5y
wanderinglynn @vumblereads Have you watched the Netflix adaptation? 5y
vumblereads Yes that‘s how I knew about it. I haven‘t read the book 😄 5y

I'm also stoked to get to this one by Todd Lockwood. He signed it and sketched me a dragon while I watched! I might buy it for my iPad so I don't have to touch this gorgeous edition lmao!!!

(Don't mind the Funko Pop of BSG's Apollo. Richard Hatch signed it for me and I was all starry-eyed about my autographs that night. Still am...)

StaceyKondla @DragonAuthors - I just bought that book lasts week, partly because of the art and partly because of dragons 😁 And because Julie Czernada said the book is delightful! I'm hoping I get it to it before the end of September. I envy your original artwork! 8y
DragonAuthors @StaceyKondla We've seen the author/artist many years running at DragonCon. He's super nice and his art is stunning! He told us the book just came out this year and is already in its third printing! 8y

About to give this first in a new series a shot. A young dragon keeper gets swept up in politics & battles for power. Adventure, danger, & evil enemies. Love the author's B&W illustrations & maps. "They were feeding the babies when the slaughter began."
