A Boston Globe Best Book of 2018 A Horn Book Best Book of 2018 "Vivid, hilarious, and heartbreaking." --Elizabeth Wein, New York Times bestselling author of Code Name Verity "The best children's book I've read this year." --Katherine Rundell, Boston Globe-Horn Book Award-winning author of Cartwheeling in Thunderstorms "A near-miraculous balance of light and joyous touch with sometimes serious and even heartbreaking material." --BCCB (starred review) From award-winning author Hilary McKay comes a "wholly satisfying" (Booklist, starred review) story full of wit, heartbreak, and hope as a girl fights for her independence during World War I. Clarry Penrose finds the good in everyone. Even in her father, who isn't fond of children, and especially girls. He doesn't worry about her education, because he knows she won't need it. It's the early twentieth century, and the only thing girls are expected to do is behave. But Clarry longs for a life of her own. She wants to dive off cliffs and go swimming with her brother Peter and cousin Rupert. And more than anything, she wants an education. She helps Peter with his homework all the time, so why can't she manage it by herself? When war breaks out, Clarry is shocked to find that Rupert has enlisted. Then he is declared missing, and Clarry is devastated. Now she must take a momentous step into the wide world--for if she misses this chance, she may never make it. This is an inspirational, funny, and heartwarming story about a girl who dares to open doors that the world would rather keep closed.

I‘ve pulled a bunch of books from my TBR shelves for #MiddleGradeMarchThroughTime—was surprised by how much MG historical fiction I had! (Also added the #MGBuddyRead for March.) I may whittle the list down further (weed out the ones that are more YA) but I‘ll put the final pile on my #BookSpin list for March and see where things land. 😊 Thank you @megnews and @sblbooks for organizing this fun historical fiction focus for Middle Grade March!

EvieBee What a gorgeous stack! In rearranging my shelves, I too found that I had a ton of unread middle grade books. Now pick some for March. 3y
sblbooks I thoroughly enjoyed Fever 1793, Esperanza Rising and Letters from Rifka! 3y
BarbaraJean @sblbooks @megnews So funny—Fever 1793 is one of the ones I thought I might take out of the pile since it seemed a bit more YA than MG. Sounds like I need to keep it in. 😁 3y
megnews It probably is a little more YA but it is really great. 3y

What a captivating book! This book took me on a journey I much enjoyed. I completely fell in love with the characters, wanting to comfort them in their times of need. The writing was also very empathetic making me feel as a part of the book. Hilary McKay wonderfully portrayed the brutality of WWI while making it alright for younger ages as well. Totally recommend, ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

@DinoMom , thank you for this amazing #ElfSwap package!

You chose a perfect book for me that‘s been long on my TBR and I absolutely adore the reading owl mug that came stuffed full of chocolates, tea, and hot chocolate. I love the Austen bookmark and pretty local Christmas card, too.

Thanks so much and Happy Holidays to you! ❤️🎄❤️🎄

The 75th Anniversary of VE Day seems a good day to start listening to this book, which takes place during the First World War.

This will be one of my favourite books of the year! What a beautiful story! You‘ll be captivated by the characters, you‘ll want to hug them, cheer for them. McKay does not hesitate to depict the harshness and sadness of war, told true simple narrative without being too ‘horrific‘ for middle graders. Excellent themes of family relationships, love, friendship, sexuality, effects of war. A gem of a book! ❤️

batsy Lovely review ❤️ Sounds like the just the kind of children's lit I enjoy. 6y
erzascarletbookgasm @batsy I know you‘ll love it! 6y

So this was my morning. I‘m a sucker for children‘s historical fiction and this was a good one. The story of Clarry and her brother Peter and their cousin Rupert. It moves speedily through early childhood before pulling zero punches through the First World War. It rushes a little to a conclusion but I enjoyed (and leaked a little) all the same. I‘d have enjoyed this at 10 and enjoyed it now

LeahBergen Yes, please. 6y
