Fever 1793
Fever 1793 | Laurie Halse Anderson
It's late summer 1793, and the streets of Philadelphia are abuzz with mosquitoes and rumors of fever. Down near the docks, many have taken ill, and the fatalities are mounting. Now they include Polly, the serving girl at the Cook Coffeehouse. But fourteen-year-old Mattie Cook doesn't get a moment to mourn the passing of her childhood playmate. New customers have overrun her family's coffee shop, located far from the mosquito-infested river, and Mattie's concerns of fever are all but overshadowed by dreams of growing her family's small business into a thriving enterprise. But when the fever begins to strike closer to home, Mattie's struggle to build a new life must give way to a new fight-the fight to stay alive.

This book shares the story of the fever of 1793 and the story of Mattie a girl trying to survive a city that has become frantic because of a disease. This is a great Litrature circle book it uses UDL : 8.3 and ESOL 2.

This source is great to use for groups while reading the book

I don't read loads of historical this far in time but I find it so interesting and so unique. This book took place when the yellow fever hit at that time. Quite similar to what we are experiencing now. #ya #historical

I did not expect to have a book haul to post this week but thanks to the amazing and accommodating owner of @thedogearedbook, I was able to select all of these without ever personally leaving my home and all but one came from her massive, dirt cheap clearance sale. Although I already had a copy of Ordinary Grace, it‘s paperback and since it‘s a favorite, I‘m happy to replace it with this hardcover copy.

Fever 1793 is a historical fiction book by Laurie Anderson. Andersonhttps://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/fever-1793-discussion-guide/%22%20%5Co%20%22Andersonhttps://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/fever-1793-discussion-guide/ has LC questions that can be asked while reading this book. I enjoyed this book because it easily garbs the attention of the reader.

Alexush I also liked that the problem that is the main focus of the book is quickly revealed. For this book the UDL Id use is 7.2 which is to relevance value and authenticity. The ESOL strategy I‘d use is #48. I‘d allow the students to journal, so they can write it in their own words and go back to look over what they‘ve written. This is for reading levels 2 and up but the interest level is 5th – 8th grade.  4y
Alexush   https://civics.sites.unc.edu/files/2012/05/Fever1793.pdf%22%20%5Co%20%22https://civics.sites.unc.edu/files/2012/05/Fever1793.pdf is a website that has a lesson plan and questions for the entire book. #ucflae3414f19  4y

YA historical fiction that delves into an epidemic of yellow fever in 1793 Philadelphia. I‘m not usually a fan of historical fiction, but the historical details were interesting & felt realistic & this was more of a story of how a traumatic event can force a child to grow up quickly. Mattie is a great character, starting out as a teen who will do what she can to work as little as possible & shifting into a young woman who steps up to the plate.

This HF novel one the Margaret A. Edwards Award, and was written by acclaimed author Laurie Halse Anderson! I remember seeing this book in my elementary school library, but I never read it because I thought it would be too gross and scary! This book will take you back to 1793 and into the lives of the Cook family. Who will survive the fever? Have your students find out in a LC! #LAE3414sp19

Butterfinger @sblbooks I cannot believe you remembered. It's been about 15 yrs ago when my 5th graders read and discussed it. When we got to the part where the baby was found, the discussion turned to what should the main character (was her name Maddie or Matilda?) do with the baby. You got regular answers like find an orphanage, etc, but my little Hmong girl, Pahoua, said, "If I was hungry, I'd eat the baby." Pahoua is 25 now and has a wonderful life. 5y
sblbooks @Butterfinger Oh Nooo...I'm glad Maddie didn't do that! I just had to Google "Hmong". I wasn't sure where they were from. I'm glad she's doing well now. It's good that you can keep in touch with your former students. 5y

It's 1793 in Philadelphia and people begin to come down with what many believe is a summer grippe. But as the fever begins to claim citizens by the hundreds, thousands... It is finally identified as yellow fever. Matilda, Mattie, takes us through her experience with the outbreak. Full of sadness and tension and rich history of the USA's former capital. Loved it!

I always forget how much I love historical fiction. This one takes place during the yellow fever outbreak in Philly in 1793. The plot was a little slow, but I think I only feel that way because the blurb on the book says “The plot RAGES like the epidemic.” No, sir, it doesn‘t, who pays you? HOWEVER, I still liked the plot. After finishing I think it was paced perfectly. I just hate #bookbait

Pickpick

This was the first book that popped up when I googled "books set in Philadelphia". I read it for a Children's Lit class in college and really enjoyed it. Books about plagues are my jam. In fact, please recommend plague books if you've read one you loved! #rockinmay #philadelphiafreedom

Laney1733 I've had my eye on this one for a bit but haven't picked it up yet. I really enjoyed Doomsday Book. 7y
Moray_Reads Have you ready the Last Man? It's one of the earliest of the genre and my favourite by Mary Shelley 7y
Reviewsbylola That's new to me! Thank you! @Leo1733 7y

LectricSheep I haven't read it yet, but this is a recent non-fiction release I've seen everywhere! It sounds awesome! 7y
Moray_Reads @Reviewsbylola It's very flowery having been written in the Romantic period but I loved it. Great portraits of Percy Shelley and Lord Byron too 7y
Cinfhen I'm pretty sure this was a plague book and if it wasn't it was still really good 7y
