The Memory Book
The Memory Book | Lara Avery
They tell me that my memory will never be the same, that I'll start forgetting things. At first just a little, and then a lot. So I'm writing to remember. Sammie McCoy is a girl with a plan: graduate at the top of her class and get out of her small town as soon as possible. Nothing will stand in her way--not even the rare genetic disorder the doctors say will slowly steal her memories and then her health. So the memory book is born: a journal written to Sammie's future self, so she can remember everything from where she stashed her study guides to just how great it feels to have a best friend again. It's where she'll record every perfect detail of her first date with longtime-crush Stuart, a gifted young writer home for the summer. And where she'll admit how much she's missed her childhood friend Cooper, and the ridiculous lengths he will go to make her laugh. The memory book will ensure Sammie never forgets the most important parts of her life--the people who have broken her heart, those who have mended it--and most of all, that if she's going to die, she's going to die living. This moving and remarkable novel introduces an inspiring character you're sure to remember, long after the last page.

I picked this up many months ago and wasn't in the right place for what I had heard I would encounter (lot's of tears). Time has passed and I'm so ready to partake of this beautiful story... here it goes.

So good. I know the ending wasn‘t a twist, but this book was very good from beginning to end. Didn‘t love the Stuart plot line, but still. ❤️

Samantha is a senior in high school. She is graduating at the top of her class and has her life planned out. Then she gets a genetic disorder that is slowly taking away her memories. She decides to write down all her memories in a book for her future self so she can remember her life. She also finds out his disorder could kill her. She learns how to live her life with this disorder. This was an emotional book.

This the author, Lara Avery from Minneapolis.
She's my new fave YA author. MC Samantha McCoy is diagnosed with Niemann -Pick type C in her senior year.; a genetic disease leading to dementia, memory loss, seizures. So she begins a Memory Book...

Contemporary's not my go-to, and I probably wouldn't have even looked twice at this book had it not been a @ForeverYoungAdult book club pick. An ambitious high schooler with big plans for her future finds out she has a rare disease that will eventually cause her to lose her memory, so she writes about her life for her future self to read. It's a bit predictable and tropey, but the main character's voice is so refreshing that I didn't mind.

Mehso-so

Lara Avery's YA contemporary "sick fic" novel is a slick read with a good first person voice but I never connected with Sam and had difficulty believing in her reaction to her disease while the inevitable YA love triangle is both heavily telegraphed and has an icky vibe given the symptoms of NPC and I also didn't like the sentiment that Sam's ambition had made her selfish and was in some way a bad thing.

The 2017 MN Book Award Winner for YA, this tells the story of Sammie who receives a death sentence diagnosis before she even really begins to live; one that before it takes her life will take her mind. Told in journal format to help Sammie remember, we walk through her journey from feeling fine to first love to her final days. Evocative of A Walk to Remember, this is less saccharine but no less heartbreaking. Highly recommended. #readlocal #mnba

Sammie is her class valedictorian. She is heading to NYU in the fall on scholarship. After graduation she is going to change the world. First she needs to conquer the terminal illness causing her to lose her memory. This is the book she writes to help herself remember. I am not ashamed to admit that I ugly cried. Twice.

⭐️⭐️⭐️
Such an easy book to read. I was drawn to the concept of a young girl who has been diagnosed with a rare disease and writes a sort of journal for her future self to read and remember her life. It was cute and sad and sometimes funny, but I just felt it could of been executed better.

I usually roll my eyes throughout hearttugging sick lit YA books, but this is better than most. The characters are well-developed and likable and the story moves along well. For libraries where YA contemporary sick-lit books are popular, this is sure to appeal and please. As a reviewer, not among my fave realistic novels this year but worth the read #bookstagram #books #reading #bookreview #yabooks #youngadultbooks #booklover #bookworm #booknerd

Bookish.Heart Sick-lit. I hadn't heard that one before! 7y
libraryfangirly @Bookish.Heart Prob not the popular way to describe those stories, but it gets the job done when character count is limited :) 7y

This was such a wonderful, beautiful, heartbreaking read. Sammie, our narrator, is writing the memory book for herself. Essentially, we are reading her thoughts and memories as she slowly deteriorates from Neimann-Pick. It was the perfect format for this kind of story. I love all of the characters. Many feels. FYI: Keep tissues handy.

As a mom of a teen, those last pages were tough to read without losing it. This book takes you thru the journey of a girl gracefully learning how to experience life on the eve of a terminal disease. Captured in quirky entries, the reader is immersed in Sammie's life choices, celebrations, and losses. Highly recommended.
