Quick housing update:

Thanks to everyone who expressed condolences & anger on my behalf (in response to the sudden shift in our living situation mid-pandemic). Thank you, especially, to @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick who said she wanted to “mentally punch” my landlord & the new owner (ME TOO!) & to @Laughterhp who kept an eye on the RI rental market for us.

We‘re signing a new lease tomorrow in one of my absolute favorite towns. We‘ll be just fine.

monalyisha @Laughterhp There‘s the most gorgeous mint plant I‘ve ever seen, a little plot for gardening, & Concord grapes growing along the fence. We‘re looking forward to spending some quantity/quality time out there. 😉 5y

Got some pretty devastating news this week. Our landlord suddenly sold the property where we‘ve been living for the past 4 years. The new owner is a rich, trust fund kid who considers himself an "artist" working to "create a more open & cooperative world." In a super open & cooperative move, he‘s kicking us out so he can move a bunch of his friends in. We‘ve LOVED this spot. It‘s more than an apartment. It‘s been our home. It really, really sucks.

monalyisha @BarbaraBb @Danielthewriter We have time. Supposedly, until October (according to our old landlord [who moves out on Monday]). We were told that it all happened very quickly but there‘s been a lot of work done on the place recently & we suspect it‘s been in the works for awhile & we were kept in the dark so that if the deal fell through, my current landlord wouldn‘t lose income if we left. It‘s all legal. It‘s just not especially moral or kind. 5y

monalyisha Thanks, everyone! We had a great deal; it was really a find. We‘ll inevitably be paying more money for less apartment wherever we go. We were just starting to feel comfortable & had just talked about being able to start saving to buy a house. We planned to be here for a couple more years while we saved. Now, those plans are pretty much moot. Ugh. And it‘s a PANDEMIC. And my husband is a wedding photographer; events are canceled. It‘s a mess, tbh. 5y

I would consider this book as a P book. It rhymes about a variety of animals and where they live. This would be a good book for a CR with the teacher and students. They rhymes can help build fluency and self-confidence. Although this book has not won any awards a great activity that can be included is for kids to create a model of their own homes, like in the resource below.

This activity aligns with ESOL strategy 11 because students can recognize a home is where you live and having them create their home provides context to the word home. This also aligns with UDL 1.1 being able to display what they‘ve learned with a hands on activity. #ucflae3414su19 6y

Summerm I love how this book can help with fluency. A lot of young readers struggle with that, so being able to practice that would be very helpful!

DMoux Loved this activity where students are able to create their own homes. Giving student freedom to create with different items like cereal boxes and paper towels is cost-effective and engaging! 6y

DrSpalding I read this book every year to my first and second graders. Excellent choice and I love the hands-on follow-up activities. 6y
