I'm a sucker for a heist plot and the fact that this was in space was fun. There's very much the beginning of a found family crew vibe that I am here for. This works as a standalone but I'm intrigued enough to read on in the series.
#BookReport
I finished nothing this week although I did get pretty far into Dark Run. I've also pretty much given up on last week's forecast.
#WeeklyForecast
Decided that since I wasn't really sticking to forecast at all anymore I'd change up my plans and put in my October #DoubleSpin and a different backlist pick on deck. Goal is to finish Dark Run and maybe get a decent way into Wizard of Earthsea.
Squidapus finished this in two days which should tell you how much he liked it! A space romp with a crew of ragtag misfits who try to get revenge after a job gone wrong. Sounds like one of a million novels with a similar plot but the writing and especially characters are so good. They're characterized incredibly well and aren't just a Joss Whedon quip machine. The cast is widely multicultural and the book contains some legit pulse pounding moments
#Aprella #day17 #BusyEarning Captain Ichabod Drift & his crew aboard the Keiko, travel space smuggling cargo & whatever else can keep that payday coming. Described as like Firefly, I found Ichabod was more morally ambiguous than Captain Mal Reynolds, but like Mal, he‘ll do anything to keep his crew safe. In this case, it‘s being blackmailed into taking a “deep run” delivering a smuggled cargo to a specific time & place on heavily fortified Earth.🌏
This started out as a good, fun, read, and quickly became a book I didn‘t want to put down. More conscience than some of the space opera-y sci-fi I‘ve read, paired with characters I was invested in, made it a page-turner. Well worth the read!
#Rocktober #day1 #TheFinalCountdown This space western is a book that is governed by time limits. The spaceship Keiko, has a working crew of outlaws & criminals. When the smooth talking Captain Ichabod Drift is blackmailed into smuggling a cargo into Earth at a specific time & date,he's left to figure out how to avoid prison without being able to tell his crew why they are taking the gig. When it all goes bad, their next job will be taking revenge.
#JuneTunz #day17 #MrBlueSky We had such beautiful Big Blue Skies on the houseboat. Each day was glorious.I didn't get a lot of reading done, spent most of the time fishing, but I did read half of this novel set in the outermost part of the blue sky, space. But if you notice in the main picture, the Mr Blue Sky is that amazing eagle that kept flying around us, checking us out & floating on the cross currents. I miss it already& cant wait to go again.
I loved this book! Not quite as much like Firefly as I was told but still a great read. Ichabod Drift, the captain of the Keiko, has a silver tongue & a wicked wit, like Captain Mal Reynolds, but unlike Mal, he has no basic sense of honour or decency. Except for his crew. Maybe. A highly enjoyable revenge drama set across a few galaxies full of violence, action & a hell of a lot of fun.
#MayBookFlowers #day19 #Peace This week on the houseboat, floating down the Hawkesbury River with nothing to do but fish & read has been the most peaceful time I've had in a very long while. Waking up to birds, sun & water & going to sleep to the rocking of the boat & the slap of water on the rivers edge was so amazing & I can't wait to be able to do it again. Hopefully very soon!
Morning reading. I've hardly been reading, too busy fishing and spending time with everyone. I'm so happy I was well enough to come, I'm having a blast!
Book1 of the houseboat holiday is Dark Run by Mike Brooks. Described as a cross between Firefly & a heist movie it's definitely my kind of story! And hallelujah, I have full coverage on the river! Whoop whoop!🙌🙌 #iamsailiniamsailinhomeagaincrossthesea🎶
I think I have enough books packed for my 4day houseboat holiday. Just in case though, I have my ereader in my bag as well. There's a fairly diverse selection here, scifi, fantasy, musical nonfiction, thriller, folk tale retelling and historical lit. Any suggestions of books I've missed which would be perfect for a slow boat ride? Bring em on!
What a phenomenal #BookMail day I had today. First up are these amazing books.Dark Run was described as Firefly in book form so I had to grab that! Dig If You Will A Picture, hey I'm a child of the 80s. Purple Rain is one of my all time fave songs.💜Winter Of The Gods is the sequel to The Immortals.Nemesis not only is written by Kathy Reichs son,it sounded intriguing. Lola is Lisbeth Salander with drugs.Forbidden Garden is magic & a walled garden.
Aimlessly wandering the sci-fi aisle, Barnes & Noble guy says "Do you like Firefly?" and puts this in my hands.
Well played, sir.
A few hours in and I'm really enjoying this one. Narration is excellent. Just got to the first big twist in the story and I'm interested to see where it goes.
