Jet Girl
Jet Girl: My Life in War, Peace, and the Cockpit of the Navy's Most Lethal Aircraft, the F/A-18 Super Hornet | Caroline Johnson
13 posts | 10 read | 6 to read
A fresh, unique insiders view of what its like to be a woman aviator in todays US Navyfrom pedicures to parachutes, friendship to firefights. Caroline Johnson was an unlikely aviation candidate. A tall blonde debutante from Colorado, she could have just as easily gone into fashion or filmmaking, and yet she went on to become an F/A-18 Super Hornet Weapons System Officer. She was one of the first women to fly a combat mission over Iraq since 2011, and one of the first women to drop bombs on ISIS. Jet Girl tells the remarkable story of the women fighting at the forefront in a military system that allows them to reach the highest peaks, and yet is in many respects still a fraternity. Johnson offers an insiders view on the fascinating, thrilling, dangerous and, at times, glamorous world of being a naval aviator. This is a coming-of age story about a young college-aged woman who draws strength from a tight knit group of friends, called the Jet Girls, and struggles with all the ordinary problems of life: love, work, catty housewives, father figures, make-up, wardrobe, not to mention being put into harms way daily with terrorist groups such as ISIS and world powers such as Russia and Iran. Some of the most memorable parts of the book are about real life in training, in the air and in combathow do you deal with having to pee in a cockpit the size of a bumper car going 600 miles an hour? Not just a memoir, this book also aims to change the conversation and to inspire and attract the next generation of men and women who are tempted to explore a life of adventure and service.

I didn‘t finish this book for my last book of LMPBC, Round 12. It was part that I couldn‘t get into the book (I struggled with the jumping back & forth) & I just ran out of time (I spent most of the month preparing for my thesis proposal defense). Sorry that I didn‘t get to give great input. I‘ll put the book in the mail this week.

sharread Okay thank you. ❤❤❤ 2y

I‘m conflicted by this memoir of a female naval aviator. She makes great points about the sexism she experienced in the jet community and the need for gender equality in the military, but she also leans way into stereotypes about what women think or want. And the timeline is all over the place. I think I‘d enjoy this more as a straight nonfiction account instead of a memoir because the author‘s voice actually got in my way.

Listened to the #audiobook read by Caroline herself, and fell in love with her voice 😍 But I also was fascinated by her, the way she fits for her dream, and how she goes her way. In no way I could do, what she does. What an amazing girl! At the same time I was shocked by all that sexism she had to deal with. Unbelievable! And still she goes on! Wow!

Just finished reading this book a few weeks ago. Loved Johnson's story and the details she provided! Very inspiring for all women! Style of the book layout was frustrating for me. Why do editors think it is a good idea to jump back and forth in the timeline so much!?

Caroline Johnson was a top-tier Naval Academy graduate who worked her way to fly as a Weapons Systems Operator for Topgun. This memoir was so well written that I was queasy when described her first flight in the ultimate jet: the Super Hornet. I loved everything about this book including her takeaway that stellar female naval officers are leaving the service because of harassment to the disservice of all Americans. #netgalley

TheShaggyShepherd I so loved this book and read it super fast because I just couldn‘t stop. 5y

I‘m so sad I‘m done with this book because I would love to hear more about what Johnson is doing with her life. Her story is absolutely fascinating and she speaks about her triumphs and failures as a US Navy Jet Girl. She also highlights the mistreatment of women in the male-dominated field, and what the consequences of that treatment can be (the majority of the last quarter of the book is rather dark). I highly recommend this fascinating memoir!

I'm in for the #netgalley #reviewathon! I am really bad about requesting way too many galleys at a time so my ratio tends to stay around 60%. But I have several fun #arcs waiting for me so I will try to get through my list a little quicker the next couple of weeks. In the next 6 weeks for the reviewathon, I am planning on reading at least 6 of my galleys, which are listed in the comments. Is anybody else reading these books?

TheShaggyShepherd - Jet Girl by Caroline Johnson (tagged)
- The Life Heroic by Elizabeth Svoboda (mostly done)
- Ida B. Wells by Diane Bailey
- Silver, Sword, and Stone by Marie Arana (started but going very slowly)
- Eyes to the Wind by Ady Barkan
- Pet by Akwaeke Emezi

BookwormDownUnder I have 10 NetGalley books to read, most by Aug 27. So I guess I‘m doing the reviewathon! I only request cozies at this point. Only started a few weeks ago and determined to keep my 100% rate! Flash to me in two months... 🤯 5y
TheShaggyShepherd @ReadingDownUnder I'm really bad about requesting too many so right now I have 17 available and 15 pending request. haha It's just so hard not to request because there's so many fun books that I won't be able to buy later on my limited budget. 5y

BookwormDownUnder @IvoryLunatic You‘re horrible!!!! 😛 Since I‘m new, I keep celebrating every time I get one. Then freak a little when they pile up. But do I stop checking for new ones every day?!?! 📚❤️ 5y
TheShaggyShepherd @ReadingDownUnder I‘ve only had it since the end of May. And I added a couple more today. 😂😂 There‘s just too many that sound so good. And then another website asked me to join today too that‘s kind of like NetGalley. Even more books! 😂 5y

Good leadership skills - or lack of those - is a frequent topic at my job so I was excited to see the same things written down here that we wish for often. I‘m seriously loving this book. It‘s so easy to read, her journey to becoming and being a jet girl is fascinating, and she‘s got many funny moments in here too. I highly recommend it so far and hope it stays like this all throughout. Thanks to #NetGalley for this super fun #arc!

I think I‘m going to call it quits for today. Thank you to #24in48 #readathon for the fun though busy weekend. Even though my clock says almost 14 hours, it was probably closer to 12 due to bathroom breaks and potty training our new foster dog and forgetting to stop the clock. Our new foster kitten seems to get a little more comfortable so we still can‘t touch. Jet Girl is a fun and interesting read so far and I can‘t wait to get further into it.

After finishing a book with strong women, I really wanted another book with strong women so here I am. I‘ve been excited to start this though I‘m having a hard time focusing on it while the bf is watching Big Bang Theory in the background. #24in48 #readathon
