Yeah probably in the minority here but that‘s fine. This book has been hyped to the point of ridiculous. The heroine is supposed to “know her mind” and be the poster child for “female empowerment.” What she is is an unlikable brat and I had to stop myself from rolling my eyes more than I should while reading. Hard pass on this one. Guess there is a reason I put off reading it. #100reads
This book screamed women empowerment with such a strong, female main character. Not changing yourself, so a person would like you. As a teenage girl, this book has really opened my eyes. I recommend this book to anyone!! Also found this picture on Pinterest.
I really wanted to love this book, especially as it promised a Slytherin romance. Alessandra grew on me pretty quickly, and I was rooting for her the whole time.
As it turned out, I enjoyed the character a lot more than the story itself.

It was just...ok. For me anyhow. I love a good story with morally grey characters but this wasn't as entertaining as I had hoped. I thought the last 25% would redeem it but the ending was kind of disappointing and rushed for me. #kindle #yafantasy #fantasy #read
How I get things done is a complete mystery to me. This is an everyday situation until my desk comes in.

A lighter and faster read after A Memory Called Empire. Wasn‘t sure I would like the protagonist after the intro scene was her reminiscing about killing her first love, but she kind of grows on you. Really wasn‘t sure how to feel about liking the book considering how both main characters seem to subscribe to a very practical set of morals. Still a fun read, though.
Book #20 - I love that this was described as a slytherin romance. I needed a quick read in between series and this didn‘t disappoint.
What an awesome book! I adored Alessandra. She is scheming, quick-witted, and unapologetic. A very different POV , especially in YA fantasy. Kallias was great as well— adored their banter and partnership. I also got swept into a vivid descriptions of the outfits (reminded me a bit of “Caraval” in that sense). And bonus points for the names all being Greek.
While I found the writing a bit simplistic, it was exactly what I wanted after reading some harder texts the last month. I loved how antihero this protagonist was and that the author wasn‘t going to shy away from her faults as a character from the beginning. In the end, she grows to be a more likable person while not completely remodeling her into a hero. The chemistry between her and the shadow king was spot on and I loved the twist ending.
Just a weeeeeeee bit hungover, so I spent the morning with coffee and my new book on my new patio set. It was such a gorgeous day and I‘m really enjoying the anti hero of this book!
Typical “girl tries to get attention of the king” story, but very fun that she is actually the antagonist of the story, and we end up rooting for her anyway! I also did not guess the twist at the end! Saw it advertised as a Slytherin romance, which is what drew me to it— I fully agree! 8/10
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This is marketed as a Slytherin romance and I have to agree. Alessandra wants to get the King‘s attention, woo him, then marry him so she can kill him. The King however does not allow anyone near him or to touch him, so this may seem a little impossible.
This book was so great. I loved the writing and the characters with their development. I loved seeing court and all the scheming going on. Highly recommend.

This beauty is the best book I‘ve read in a long, long time. I had high hopes going in, and then it exceeded even my wildest dreams. Alessandra is delightfully devious, and Kallias is swoon-worthy and utterly perfect for our badass heroine. I had so much fun with this one I‘m sorry to be done with it—luckily, Tricia Levenseller has some other books I can check out next!!!
I love a swoon-worthy romance, and this book has that and more! It was a fast, fun read. The feminist message throughout and supportive male characters enhanced the story, in my opinion. I highly recommend!
There is something about Tricia Levenseller‘s writing style I like. The characters are strong and vivid and sassy and so alive. This story is no different.
Still never EVER gonna stop yelling about how much I love this book 😍 Happy book birthday!!

Wow, this book was a great read! I was hooked after reading the first sentence. It was fun reading about a scheming, conniving woman and actually liking her instead of despising her. Alessandra was confident and comfortable with who she was and didn‘t care about the opinions of anybody else. This was my first time reading something by Tricia Levenseller and I look forward to reading more of her work.
Already read this but now we‘re LESS THAN A WEEK AWAY and you bet your shadowy ass I‘m rereading it the minute I get the final version in my greedy little hands. Alessandra can woo the Shadow King ALL OVER AGAIN sexy seductress you!!!!
Time to snag the Shadow king in wedded bliss. Maybe...
This cover reminds me of Courting Darkness by Robin LeFevers. In fact it's almost a complete replica. There is a bit of cover difference, and some wings, but other than that they could be interchangeable. So much so I thought originally this was the sequel to Courting Darkness.
