The Tortoise and the Hare
The Tortoise and the Hare | Hilary Mantel, Elizabeth Jenkins
17 posts | 14 read | 7 to read
In affairs of the heart the race is not necessarily won by the swift or the fair. Imogen, the beautiful and much younger wife of distinguished barrister Evelyn Gresham, is facing the greatest challenge of her married life. Their neighbour Blanche Silcox, competent, middle-aged and ungainly - the very opposite of Imogen - seems to be vying for Evelyn's attention. And to Imogen's increasing disbelief, she may be succeeding. 'A subtle and beautiful book ... Very few authors combine her acute psychological insight with her grace and style. There is plenty of life in the modern novel, plenty of authors who will shock and amaze you - but who will put on the page a beautiful sentence, a sentence you will want to read twice?' 52 yr old Evelyn is a successful leading barrister with a much younger, beautiful wife, imogen . When he befriends older Blanche who is rich ,frumpy, but centre of countryside activity this friendship becomes something more as Imogen finds herself at the centre of a battle for husband son and marriage. Brilliant writing combined with a compelling plot I was totally absorbed by this book, which I found from a retro backlisted with Carmen calil.

Tamra Sounds engaging! 2y
jlhammar I have this one waiting on my shelves. Looking forward to it! 2y

This is so hilarious and cynical.

Ruthiella I definitely need to read more E. Taylor. I‘ve only read (and loved) 2y
Vansa This is by Elizabeth Jenkins, not Taylor! 😀 2y

Imogen, described as a Cinderella-type, tries to be the perfect wife & mother to successful imposing husband Evelyn & precocious son Gavin. But when her husband befriends an older, frumpy no-nonsense neighbor Blanche, Imogen questions herself & her marriage. This is a domestic drama with a chill. As said on the Backlisted pod, it feels like a crime novel but the crime & victim aren't entirely clear. Each character is well observed and no one 👇

merelybookish Is without flaw (although some are easier to dislike than others...Evelyn for example that paragon of masculinity. 🙄) The plot seems simple but it unfolds in layers. Another #192025 ticked off. @Librarybelle 2y
jlhammar I've got this one on my shelves. Looking forward to it! 2y
merelybookish @jlhammar It's a rich novel! Will be interested to see what you think when you get to it! 2y

batsy Also on my TBR! Intriguing review. And that Backlisted description is pretty great. 2y
merelybookish @batsy Yes! Backlisted is so good. Once they said it, I totally agreed. There sad a sense throughout that something bad was about to happen. 2y
LeahBergen Great review! You have me even more intrigued now. 2y
Librarybelle Great review! 2y
merelybookish @LeahBergen Thank you I would love to hear what you think! 2y

The premise of this novel seems to be the unthinkable possibility that a husband might actually have an affair with an unattractive woman. 😐

Pruzy Why is the book tagged as Hilary Mantel, but the author on the book Elizabeth Jenkins? Was it a pen name? (Edit: Oh it looks like Mantel provided an intro or an afterword on an edition) (edited) 2y
BarbaraBB @Pruzy It‘s confusing though. I thought too Mantel was the author and was surprised by the subject as described by Margot! 2y
merelybookish @Pruzy @BarbaraBB Yes, very confusing! But first edition of the book that pops up when I search. I would love to read Mantel's essay about it! Especially now that I'm done. 2y

I haven't done #bookspin in a while but seeing everyone's lists + procrastination + trying to read books I own = making a list.
These are all books I have piled up around my bed. Reading 2 of these would feel like an accomplishment!

Mehso-so

Pros: lovely descriptive writing, a close look at a specific way of life at a specific time & place for a certain class of people (love feeling like I'm behind the scenes), a wildly varied cast
Cons: insipid heroine; in fact, most characters, even if interesting, were either unsympathetic or cold. (Wondering now if that's due to seeing thru MCs boring eyes?) A love quadrangle that would have been fascinating if any of them had more personality.

bookandbedandtea Ultimately I really enjoyed it as a snapshot of 1950s English village life but the plot didn't do much for me. 4y
rubyslippersreads Gorgeous cover, though. 😍 4y

Panpan

This is the kind of quiet story about complex relationships that Elizabeth Taylor composes with such a deft touch but the long paragraphs and irritating characters made Jenkins' story of a disintegrating marriage feel interminable to me.

I've missed reading time with Dottie! We're looking for something light and British. We've been watching too much of THE CROWN on Netflix. Anyone else watching?!? #readinginbed #photoadaynov16 #vmc #dogsoflitsy #dottie

GlitteryOtters I have The Crown in my queue to watch sometime after I finish NaNoWriMo (I'm trying to keep all my entertainment light & fluffy right now as NaNo is sucking out most of my brain). It sounds fantastic! Can't wait to get to it! 8y
annahenke Just finished the season. Loved it! 8y
EvieBee @GlitteryOtters I hear you! It's really a great show, though. My mother-in-law nudged me into watching and I haven't been able to stop! 8y

Oftencantdecide The Crown was great! Also, your dog is adorable. 8y
Beckys_Books I've only watched three episodes, but really enjoying it! 8y
EvieBee @Marchpane 6 seasons?! Yes! So much to look forward to! 8y
EvieBee @Oftencantdecide Thank you, Em! So is yours! They could be cousins, right? 8y
EvieBee @Beckys_Books I just started the 4th episode but the episodes are so long that when you watch back to back...a whole evening can pass you by! 8y
Suet624 Great show! Love John Lithgow's portrayal of Churchill. 8y
EvieBee @Suet624 He is so great! I forget he isn't Churchill! 8y

"Brilliant anger illuminated his face; she had an instant's impression of seeing it by a flash of lightning. Then he moved his head, and there was nothing but a handsome, elderly, tired man, standing in a drawing-room made gloomy by the foliage outside."
