Idiot
Idiot: Life Stories from the Creator of Help Helen Smash | Laura Clery
19 posts | 24 read | 5 to read
From YouTube star and Facebook Video sensation Laura Clery comes a collection of comedic essays in the vein of We Are Never Meeting in Real Life by Samantha Irby and Youll Grow Out of It by Jessi Klein. Laura Clery makes a living by sharing inappropriate comedy sketches with millions of strangers on the Internet. She writes songs about her anatomy, talks trash about her one-eyed rescue pug, and sexually harasses her husband, Stephen. And it pays the bills! Now, in her first-ever book, Laura recounts how she went from being a dangerously impulsive, broke, unemployable, suicidal, cocaine-addicted narcissist, crippled by fear and hopping from one toxic romance to the nextto a more-happy-than-not, somewhat rational, meditating, vegan yogi with good credit, a great marriage, a fantastic career, and four unfortunate-looking rescue animals. Still, above all, Laura remains an amazingly talented, adorable, and vulnerable, self-describedIdiot. With her signature brand of offbeat, no-holds-barred humor, Idiot introduces you to a wildly originaland undeniably relatablenew voice.

I was super skeptical on his book. I had run across her page on Facebook when she did the “Help Helen Smash” and began watching her. Some of her posts began to get deeper and I learned more about her and her journey and I immediately wanted to buy her book.

Wow. She is an incredible woman. She and her husband are so@open and honest about addiction and their journeys. It‘s a breath of fresh air. It‘s a good, easy read with some heavy subjects.

LeahBergen How are you liking The Babysitter? I‘ve been eyeing that one. 3y
Reviewsbylola @LeahBergen It‘s just ok tbh. I‘m not impressed. It doesn‘t feel very cohesive. Another true crime memoir pictured, which I finished earlier in the week, is much better. 3y

I ran across a video on FB a few months ago that Laura and her husband Steven did, and their humor was the perfect mix of self deprecating and over the top. So when I saw this title on Libby, I figured I‘d give it a try. Laura is close to my age and I could see myself in her coming of age, to a point. 😂 She lived a much freer, more bold existence and its shocking she emerged unscathed. Def recommend.

Lizpixie I follow her on FB as well. She‘s just had a little girl to add to her family & both she & her big brother are adorable! 3y

Book 19 of 2021. I like Laura Clery from her Facebook videos, but hadn‘t realized she struggles with addiction.

I may not be able to relate to some of the aspects of Laura‘s life, but I definitely relate to letting things distract me from my dreams and goals. I‘ve also been taking steps to change that!

4.5⭐️ The story is absolutely funny, and it‘s totally worth reading just for the laughs. However, the authenticity that Laura has about who she was and what she has accomplished makes the stories so much better. It‘s a chance at seeing how someone can truly overcome addiction and strive to be successful, not only in their career, but overall in life. Definitely worth the read.

Crazeedi So glad you're on litsy! Welcome! You will love it here 3y

I started this a month ago but only read 1 chapter before my loan expired. I picked it up again last night and had a hard time putting it down. I‘ve always thought she was hilarious. After the 1st chapter I wasn‘t wowed & thought it would just end up being pure fluff, but she surprised me. She is very candid about her journey with addiction & getting sober. There‘s a lot more substance to it than I originally thought. 4⭐️ Recommended!

Listened to this earlier this month and it was really inspiring and hilarious. A great story that shows it doesn't matter how badly you get off course; if you have a dream you can still achieve it. Clery was the perfect narrator for this audio version too, btw.

Read the tagged book for chronic illness. This memoir details her addiction to drugs and alcohol and her struggles to reach sobriety. I follow her various social media and she talks about stuff she does everyday to maintain her sobriety. I never imagined it was as bad as it was. Many kudos to her for getting sober and staying that way. #audio

I love this cover. I love Laura's IG.
Not everyone needs an autobiography.
I feel for her privileged beautiful White girl struggle. Addiction is a terrible thing and it is always nice to hear a success story. It was exciting when Stephen showed up. In the end thus was far less funny or enlightening than I was hoping for.
Overall just not as good as many of these types of books that are out there.

Comedienne recounts her troubled past, journey to fulfillment, and ends with an amazingly positive message, with plenty of laughs along the way.

Taking advantage of the time the kids are playing to get some reading in.

blithebuoyant Oooooh how is this? I‘ve been wanting to listen to the audiobook 4y
LilMrmd79 I really liked it. It‘s a lot about her addiction so it does feel like when you read a fiction book and you are cringing at the choices they make but it‘s very honest so I like that. 4y
