Mimi Lee is in over her head. There's her new Los Angeles pet grooming shop to run, her matchmaking mother to thwart, her talking cat Marshmallow to tend tooh, and the murder of a local breeder to solve...now if only Mimi hadn't landed herself on top of the suspect list. Mimi Lee hoped to give Los Angeles animal lovers something to talk about with her pet grooming shop, Hollywoof. She never imagined that the first cat she said hello to would talk back or be quite so, well, cattyespecially about those disastrous dates Mimi's mother keeps setting up. When Marshmallow exposes local breeder Russ Nolan for mistreating Chihuahuas, Mimi steals some of her cat's attitude to tell Russ off. The next day the police show up at Hollywoof. Russ has been found dead, and Mimi's shouting match with him has secured her top billing as the main suspect. Hoping to clear her name and save the pups Russ left behind, Mimi enlists help from her dreamy lawyer neighbor Josh. But even with Josh on board, it'll take Mimi and Marshmallow a lot of sleuthing and more than a little sass to get back to the pet-grooming lifeand off the murder scene.

Read this for my May Cozy Reading Challenge Bookclub.. Wasnt my favorite but I seem to be part of the minority. Everyone loved the talking Cat Marshmallow but talking animals isn't something I really haven't be able to get into

I spent today reading this cozy mystery. While it kept me engaged there were problems with it. The psychic connection between Mimi and her cat , Marshmallow was hard to believe. Especially when Marshmallow understood other animals and translated conversations. There were other issues but I don‘t want to give any spoilers. Just suspend your disbelief and enjoy the Lee family.

Somehow this entertained me enough that the flaws didn't really bother me. I wanted something light and easy to listen to on my walks, and this fit the bill. The talking cat sidekick was great, but there were lots of things that had me thinking "that's not how that works" or "nobody does that!"

Oh boy, I did not enjoy this book one bit. For me, the writing felt very stilted; it honestly felt like trudging through mud attempting to get through Mimi's inner dialogue. Mimi put herself into so many dangerous and ridiculous situations that it was hard for me to sympathize with her at all. I can't think of a single thing that would make me recommend this book to someone.

brittanyreads Yikes! **Takes this on off my TBR...** 🤣 2y
TheAromaofBooks Oh my gosh, this book drove me crazy! If she's trying to run her own business, why is she constantly NOT THERE?! Why is she taking a cat with her to all of her appointments and on random drives out into the countryside?! Why is she snooping around at all?! There was just no motivation for literally a single character and it was sooo aggravating! 😂 2y
TheReadingNurse @BrittanyReads I was so excited to read it and it left me so so disappointed! 2y

TheReadingNurse @TheAromaofBooks Also the love story between Mimi and Josh felt so....rushed? Not completely fleshed out?? 2y
brittanyreads Hate when that happens 😔 2y
brittanyreads I'm currently reading a more modern cozy mystery and enjoying it so far! 2y
TheReadingNurse @BrittanyReads Killer Content is on my TBR and I'm looking forward to that one! 2y

Cozy mysteries are my comfort reads! Mimi Lee Gets a Clue is the first book I‘ve finished for the #AwesomeApril Readathon.

Mimi owns a dog grooming business called Hollywoof and has a cat named Marshmallow who she teams up with to solve a murder! Ok so you have to suspend reality to enjoy this book but it was cute and entertaining—just what I needed right now 🐈

Andrew65 Hope you enjoyed it. 😊 3y

This one just isn't for me. Too many moments of me going ??!!?? Mimi goes to interview a guy WHO RAISES DOGS and she TAKES HER CAT??!! Mimi goes to talk with a lawyer IN A LAW OFFICE and she TAKES HER CAT. Mimi goes to a class FOR DOGS and she TAKES HER CAT. Why?!?!?? Also she is supposedly starting her brand new dog grooming business, but in the first five days she comes in late, leaves early, and takes long lunches...not convinced she's cut ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) out to be a business owner!

Also, I will say that part of this story is Mimi's cat can talk to her, so I think eventually she's taking the cat along so she can get his opinion (????) but that was NOT the case when she went to visit the dog breeder, or a couple of the other earlier stops in the book so.

Anyway, it didn't seem to be badly written, and Mimi is likable, it's just not for me.

AmyG I read this as glue. Who gets a glue? 🤣 4y

TheAromaofBooks @rockpools - Sometimes cozies do require a slight suspension of reality, but Mimi's complete disregard for her business that is supposedly her “dream“ and the way she was lugging a giant fluffy cat around with her for apparently no reason was just tooooo much for me haha 4y
TheAromaofBooks @AmyG - haha I feel like maybe Mimi was SNIFFING the glue, because I'm not sure why else she would take a cat with her everywhere! 😂 4y
In_the_stacks Hahaha I am tempted to read this now just because your description of it is so funny! 😂 4y
TheAromaofBooks @NomiReads - Honestly, it wasn't a BAD book, and I did love the way that Mimi has a happy, loving family in the background, but I just couldn't get past the silliness haha 4y

The concept is great - a dog groomer / owner of the adorably named Hollywoof - reluctantly adopts a cat with whom she shares a telepathic bond and together they solve a murder. I‘ll likely read the second, but found the first somewhat repetitive (she just kept going back to Russ‘ house) and the romance a tad flat. I‘m interested to see where it goes next book because I do really like the telepathic bond Mimi and Marshmallow share.

BiblioLitten Marshmallow was the only part I liked about the book. 4y

Now that I‘m home all day, I have 15 books on the go. I‘m comfortable with 6-8 but this is out of control. How do I focus enough to get through these? Also I‘d planned to read the new Cassandra Clare on the long weekend as a reward because: life. Do I bail on these for the long weekend? #anxiety

CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian Omg that is so many! 4y
Soubhiville Wow! I couldn‘t handle that many at once. I say read whatever makes you happy right now. If that means starting the one you hoped to read on the weekend, great! If one of these is calling you more, go with that. 4y
Hooked_on_books I find myself juggling more books than usual right now as well. And I think we all need to give ourselves a bit of a break right now. Do whatever feels right with your reading and let yourself be who you are right now. This too shall pass! Eventually. 4y

I‘m stressed and anxious and so can‘t read, but I keep thinking that if I buy the right book I‘ll be able to read and that doesn‘t work so I think those books are not the right ones and buy more and TLDR version #bookmail

BethM Same- minus the buying part. Hang in there! (edited) 4y
DGRachel If you count the books I‘ve ordered but that haven‘t arrived yet, I think I‘ve bought nearly 50 new books in the last week and a half, and that doesn‘t include ebooks or audiobooks, so... I feel you. 😳 Best of luck finding something you can focus on! 4y

DGRachel I got so worried about my local indie not surviving the social distancing (and now the three week county stay at home order), that I went a little nuts. And then someone somewhere posted about being sure to support your local B&N, too, because they are a wall between indies and the Evil Amazon Empire, so I had to get a stack of books from them, too. 🤦🏻‍♀️ Then Akashic Books posted on Insta...well, you know what happened. 🤣🤣 4y
merelybookish I have also been buying books like crazy. 😳 It's a fun distraction and it makes me feel like I'm helping businesses that need help. But it's dangerous. 4y
BookishTrish @merelybookish Many of mine have been Canadian partly because I worry about the impact COVID is having on the publishing industry. 4y
merelybookish @BookishTrish I didn't think about Canada -- I try to support a few Maritime publishers (the few that exist). Add that to my next book buying spree. 4y
BiblioLitten Are you liking the book by Chow? 4y
BookishTrish @BiblioLitten Very much. I take huge amounts of delight in the very niche ‘cozy mystery with telepathic animals‘ subgenre 4y
BiblioLitten 😁 Marshmallow is a delight!! 4y

This is the first book in this series and I‘m happy to report that the kitty in this book Marshmallow, was very much a contributing character. He was a great addition to this story. Also, note, that as this is the first book in the series, there is a lot of information given about Mimi, her friends, family, and business. Do not let that be a turn off because this was truly an adorable cozy mystery that is sure to delight you!
