A classic from the author of The First Phone Call from HeavenMaybe it was a grandparent, or a teacher, or a colleague. Someone older, patient and wise, who understood you when you were young and searching, helped you see the world as a more profound place, gave you sound advice to help you make your way through it.For Mitch Albom, that person was Morrie Schwartz, his college professor from nearly twenty years ago.Maybe, like Mitch, you lost track of this mentor as you made your way, and the insights faded, and the world seemed colder. Wouldn't you like to see that person again, ask the bigger questions that still haunt you, receive wisdom for your busy life today the way you once did when you were younger?Mitch Albom had that second chance. He rediscovered Morrie in the last months of the older man's life. Knowing he was dying, Morrie visited with Mitch in his study every Tuesday, just as they used to back in college. Their rekindled relationship turned into one final class: lessons in how to live.Tuesdays with Morrie is a magical chronicle of their time together, through which Mitch shares Morrie's lasting gift with the world. From the Trade Paperback edition.

This book, about an old professor who is dying and his student taking his last class from him about life is as enlightening, as it is humourous and heart felt. Tugging at your tear ducts, this brings out laughter, joy and so many emotions but most of all it teaches the reader about man's primary obsession: death. An incredible journey that illuminates the many problems we see in a simple, easy manner. A truly incredible piece. #amustread #life

This book. It was one of those books that I was probably supposed to have read before now and just never did. However, someone on Facebook mentioned teaching it with their seniors and I thought that might be something to try. Which of course meant I had to read it. This is a good read for sure and moved me in many ways. I look forward to sharing with my own students. #vhsreads #teachersoflitsy

I can see why it was popular however many years ago, but I didn't find anything especially revelatory here. Interesting to hear one man's take on life and death, but I find this less than an authoritative text.

I read this book so I could help a student finish out their report and pass English. Turns out he didn‘t actually need my help, but I‘m still glad I read the book. It was so sweet and honestly really touched me. I definitely cried a little.

Kid: “You haven‘t read it?!? I don‘t know, I didn‘t listen.”

“Love wins. Love always wins.”

I didn‘t read this lovely memoir until just this year and that truthfully is my only regret - not having found the time to read it sooner.

Every Tuesday, Mitch learns yet another invaluable lesson from his teacher Morris, as he watches slip away little by little due to the horrors of ALS.

Tuesday‘s With Morrie will leave you wiping your eyes... but also, it reminds you to value life.

Part of the problem is that everyone is in such a hurry. People haven't found meaning in their lives, so they're running all the time looking for it. They think the next car, the next house, the next job. Then they find those things are empty, too, and they keep running.
--Morrie, Tuesdays with Morrie

Do the kinds of things that come from the heart. When you do, you won't be dissatisfied, you won't be envious, you won't be longing for somebody else's things. On the contrary, you'll be overwhelmed with what comes back.
--Morrie, Tuesdays with Morrie

If you're trying to show off for people at the top, forget it. They will look down at you anyhow. And if you're trying to show off for people at the bottom, forget it. They will only envy you. Status will get you nowhere. Only an open heart will allow you to float equally between everyone.
--Morrie, Tuesdays with Morrie

The most important thing in life is to learn how to give out love, and to let it come in.
Let it come in. We think we don't deserve love, we think if we let it in we'll become too soft. But a wise man named Levine said it right. He said, "Love is the only rational act."
--Morrie, Tuesdays with Morrie

quote
MicheleCroft
Tuesdays with Morrie | Mitch Albom

So many people walk around with a meaningless life. They seem half-asleep, even when they're busy doing things they think are important. This is because they're chasing the wrong things. The way you get meaning into your life is to devote yourself to loving others, devote yourself to your community around you, and devote yourself to creating something that gives you purpose and meaning.

Life is a series of pulls back and forth. You want to do one thing, but are bound to do something else. Something hurts you, yet you know it shouldn't. You take certain things for granted, even when you know you should never take anything for granted.
A tension of opposites, like a pull on a rubber band. And most of us live somewhere in the middle.

Gem of a book. Never have I ever highlighted so much text of any book I've read before. The author's teacher becomes your teacher almost effortlessly and before you know it, you look forward to the next Tuesday as much as the author did. Will pick this book up again whenever I feel like the gift of life is being taken for granted, for Morrie never fails to remind you to live life to the fullest, even in darkest of times.

quote
ShelfRighteous
Tuesdays with Morrie | Mitch Albom

Food for thought

"People are only mean when they're threatened," he said later that day, "and that's what our culture does. That's what our economy does. Even people who have jobs in our economy are threatened, because they worry about losing them. And when you get threatened, you start looking out only for yourself. You start making money a god. It is all part of this culture."

He exhaled. "Which is why I don't buy into it."

quote
ShelfRighteous
Tuesdays with Morrie | Mitch Albom

"Take any emotion-love for a woman, or grief for a loved one, or what I'm going through, fear and pain from a deadly illness. If you hold back on the emotions-if you don't allow yourself to go all the way through them-you can never get to being detached, you're too busy being afraid. You're afraid of the pain, you're afraid of the grief. You're afraid of the vulnerability that loving entails.

quote
ShelfRighteous
Tuesdays with Morrie | Mitch Albom

But everyone knows someone who has died, I said. Why is it so hard to think about dying?

"Because," Morrie continued, "most of us all walk around as if we're sleepwalking. We really don't experience the world fully, because we're half-asleep, doing things we automatically think we have to do."

quote
ShelfRighteous
Tuesdays with Morrie | Mitch Albom

"Mitch, the culture doesn't encourage you to think about such things until you're about to die. We're so wrapped up with egotistical things, career, family, having enough money, meeting the mortgage, getting a new car, fixing the radiator when it breaks-we're involved in trilions of little acts just to keep going. So we don't get into the habit of standing back and looking at our lives n saying,Is this all? Is this all I want?Is something missing?"

tammysue This sounds great - stacked! 1y
ShelfRighteous @whatshesreadingnow Its such a great book Tammy! I'm very sure this isn't the last time I'll be reading it. Recommending it to everyone. 1y

"It's only horrible if you see it that way," Morrie said. "It's horrible to watch my body slowly wilt away to nothing. But it's also wonderful because of all the time I get to say good-bye."

He smiled. "Not everyone is so lucky."

I would suggest everyone who cribs about the smallest things (like me) to give this book a read. Truly opens your eyes towards the smallest of things we take for granted everyday.

quote
ShelfRighteous
Tuesdays with Morrie | Mitch Albom

Morrie had told me: "So many people walk around with a meaningless life. They seem half-asleep, even when they're busy doing things they think are important. This is because they're chasing the wrong things. The way you get meaning into your life is to devote yourself to loving others, devote yourself to your community around you, and devote yourself to creating something that gives you purpose and meaning."

Words of wisdom, indeed!

I shed a few tears at the end of this book, but ultimately I felt it lacked depth and was mostly written for show. The author states in the afterward it was written to help pay for Morrie‘s medical bills and I get the feeling it was rushed. Somehow knowing that just cheapened the whole thing for me. I really thought it was written because Morrie had something to say. If you want a short, inspirational book, this one is ok. #nonfiction #read
