The hero of The Poet and The Scarecrow is back in the new thriller from #1 New York Times bestselling author Michael Connelly. Jack McEvoy, the journalist who never backs down, tracks a serial killer who has been operating completely under the radar--until now. Veteran reporter Jack McEvoy has taken down killers before, but when a woman he had a one-night stand with is murdered in a particularly brutal way, McEvoy realizes he might be facing a criminal mind unlike any he's ever encountered. McEvoy investigates---against the warnings of the police and his own editor---and makes a shocking discovery that connects the crime to other mysterious deaths across the country. But his inquiry hits a snag when he himself becomes a suspect. As he races to clear his name, McEvoy's findings point to a serial killer working under the radar of law enforcement for years, and using personal data shared by the victims themselves to select and hunt his targets. Called "the Raymond Chandler of this generation" (Associated Press), Michael Connelly once again delivers an unputdownable thriller that reveals a predator operating from the darkest corners of human nature---and one man courageous and determined enough to stand in his way.

Eggs @Andrew65 I really prefer reading series in proper order, but bc I‘m a library borrower, it doesn‘t always work that way. Hope you enjoy #4! 2y

I find the McEvoy novels annoying because the main characters are always making the exact same mistakes. At least the twists in this one weren't quite as predictable as I'd worried they'd be. The narrator's accent for one of the characters was reminiscent of Kevin Costner in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, which was amusing but probably not the effect Connelly intended.

Clare-Dragonfly At the beginning or end of the movie? I swear Costner gives up on the accent two-thirds of the way through 😅 (also, Cary Elwes: unlike some Robin Hoods, I can speak with an English accent!) 2y

Now that I‘ve completed my two planned #FabulousFebruary books, I‘m jumping into #WeekendReading with four books at once...my usual chaos. 😆

The Elizabeth Peters title is for #Roll100, but the other three are slightly random. I‘m particularly curious about the Betsy Tacy books. I did not encounter them as a child.

I'm not as obsessed with Jack McEvoy as I am with Bosch, Ballard, or Haller, but still a compelling case that had a creepy edge. What happens when the DNA you've sent in to an ancestry site isn't protected as anonymously as you think? What happens when that data makes its way into the hands of a serial killer? 3.5⭐️

I‘m not the biggest fan of this genre written in first person, especially since Connelly usually doesn‘t in his other books. However, I thought the story was pretty decent, despite it not captivating me like some other stories. I never truly felt immersed in the story. Additionally, I felt the ending was anti-climatic & was tied up similarly like a Hallmark movie. The one thing I will praise this book for is basing Fair Warning off a real website.

When DNA mapping is misused to find victims by a killer, it raises serious questions about the need to know more, Science can corrupt as well. The pursuit of more knowledge can be dangerous as well.
Jack McEvoy is back in this novel with his trademark perseverance and the dogged skills of a seasoned crime reporter. Please read more from here https://rb.gy/j2vmyh Your visits are highly appreciated!

My work bookclub pick.
This was between a pick and a so-so.
Not enough depth to the characters for me.

Centique How are you doing Nerissa? How are things in your corner of Australia? 💕💕 4y
Rissreads @Centique we can‘t complain here in Western Australia, life is almost normal. I feel for everyone else! You must be annoyed with locking down again but I suppose it‘s for the best. It certainly makes you think about what‘s important in life. Have you got plenty to read? 😘 4y
Centique @Rissreads I will never run out of reading material so that‘s ok! I‘m not that annoyed about it. Looks like the virus maybe got picked up off a surface - at border or quarantine - couldn‘t really be foreseen - and we‘ve upped our game in those places so hopefully it won‘t happen again for a while. Plenty of people were angry but politicians are just amping that up pre election. Fingers crossed we‘ll be out next week sometime 🤞 4y
jdw Completely agree on deciding between a pick and a so-so. I couldn‘t connect with the characters as much as I wanted and that‘s usually not a problem with his other series 3y

Now he has to use all his investigative skills to find the real killer before he‘s put in jail himself.

This is the third book featuring Jack McEvoy, the journalist who first appeared in The Poet. It's been 10 years since he published a book and as the story opens he's writing for a consumer protection website when a past chance encounter draws him into a murder investigation. Jack is not a perfect hero, but death is still his beat and he's relentless in pursuit of the truth.

🎧 I really enjoyed this book. Jack was a little bit of an ass but that‘s my only gripe. As far as I can tell no Bosch! Good narrators. A solid story. A reporter, his female co-worker & his x-fbi/x-gf do some amateur sleuthing & end up with a serial killer. The killer has purchased DNA test results based on a gene which is an indication of addiction, female sex addiction. Poses ?‘s regarding privacy & security. Thriller recommendation! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

#58 of my year. I can‘t even tell you how long I‘ve been waiting for this book to come out. I‘m so freaking excited. We finally have another McEvoy story and get to see what‘s going on with the Poet 😱 I met Connelly many years ago & he signed The Poet & The Narrows for me so you know I‘ve gotta get this one signed too 😄 if you haven‘t read this series you should stop whatever you‘re doing and go pick it up, it‘s one of the best

Caffeinated_Reader Oh bravo! That was a whirlwind of a thrill. I love how everything played out and seeing Walling and McEvoy back together was exciting while it lasted. Hope & pain. Damn patterns we all fall into. I loved the way everything came together and how we even got to read the newspaper articles. 4y
Caffeinated_Reader The quoting of the beginning paragraph of The Poet was brilliant. The Poet remains one of my all time favorite books written. The writing style and how perfectly each sentence is I could talk about all day. This book was a masterful addition to the McEvoy chronicles. Damn I hope we get more! (edited) 4y
