The Great Offshore Grounds
The Great Offshore Grounds: A novel | Vanessa Veselka
18 posts | 10 read | 12 to read
A wildly original, cross-country novel that subverts a long tradition of family narratives and casts new light on the mythologies--national, individual, and collective--that drive and define us. On the day of their estranged father's wedding, half-sisters Cheyenne and Livy set off to claim their inheritance. It's been years since the two have seen each other. Cheyenne is newly back in Seattle, crashing with Livy after a failed marriage and a series of dead ends. Livy works refinishing boats, her resentment against her free-loading sister growing as she tamps down dreams of fishing off the coast of Alaska. But the promise of a shot at financial security brings the two together to claim what's theirs. Except: instead of money, their father gives them information--a name--that both reveals a stunning family secret and compels them to come to grips with it. In the face of their new reality, the sisters and their adopted brother each set out on journeys that will test their faith in each other, as well as their definitions of freedom. Moving from Seattle's underground to the docks of the Far North, from the hideaways of the southern swamps to the storied reaches of the Great Offshore Grounds, Veselka spins a tale with boundless verve, linguistic vitality, and undeniable tenderness--it is the first great novel of late-capitalist America.

Siblings struggle to find their place in the world & discover their true origin stories. They are raised unconventionally, which could be expansive for them, but it leaves them feeling unmoored. This is a road trip, an adventure story, a ghost story, and a coming-of-age story (for characters who are 30+). It‘s full of grief, rage, trauma, & ultimately love. It‘s also…A LOT. The key word IS “struggle.” It‘s not easy — inside the story or out.👇🏻

monalyisha 1/1: There‘s so much content crammed into its pages. Though I‘ve seen it called a “character-based” story (and it is! — to some extent [but there‘s also a lot of forced distance]), it‘s one of those books I wish I‘d read in a college course, alongside a professor guiding me through deep dives and toward relevant research. This character driven family saga takes us through multiple locations on land and sea with excellent prose, thought provoking storylines and a stoic look at poverty in America…with just a bit of mysticism.

In other news, after several rounds of voting, my IRL book club‘s choices for our next year of reading have been decided! Exciting stuff!

Megabooks Great list!! 2y
monalyisha @erinreads The tagged was suggested by me & comes straight off of your #NewYearWhoDis list last year! Con: I didn‘t read it this year. Pro: Now seven people will be reading it instead of just one! 🙌🏻 2y

Two sisters go to their estranged father‘s wedding and discover the answer to a long-held family secret, and then set out to unravel it. The novels follows them separately and together, and includes road trips, fishing expeditions, assault, and a silent retreat. The best kind of family novel.

This is not a book I normally would gravitate towards. Filled with characters who are all a bit (some more than a bit) narcissistic, a family drama of sorts. But the writing is enchanting and the story filled with tragedy - often if the characters own making - is absorbing. I really enjoyed this.

This week's TBR. I finished 2 books over the weekend, so hoping to get these 2 done over the weekdays.
Fun that they have the same goodreads score!

Sharing my fabulous #NewYearWhoDis list from @erinreads 🎉!

Pictured are those I‘m most excited to read...but there are plenty more I‘m looking forward to. I‘m especially thrilled about tagged (which I‘d not heard of yet! I love that!) & the L.M. Montgomery.

I didn‘t read “Anne” until I was in my late 20‘s, when I became immediately enamored. Such scope for imagination!

Thanks, Erin! 🙌🏻

monalyisha P.S. I‘ve only actually read one of these (The Seas by Samantha Hunt)! 🌊 3y
rachelsbrittain I've really been wanting to read 3y
monalyisha @rachelsbrittain I liked his book How to Stop Time...but I LOVED The Humans (& so did my husband, who‘s not a big reader!). I‘m eager to see where this one falls. 3y

vivastory Stoner & Rebecca? Clearly this is an excellent list 👏 😂 3y
rachelsbrittain @monalyisha oohh I'll have to add those toy list as well! 3y
monalyisha @vivastory Not at all biased. 😅 3y
TheAromaofBooks The Blue Castle is one of my all-time favorites!! 3y
monalyisha @TheAromaofBooks I hope I can say the same in two months‘ time! 3y
erinreads Such good ones to start with! I hope you love everything you get to off my list! And The Blue Castle was my absolute favorite from this year, so really hoping you love it, too. 3y
monalyisha @erinreads I definitely feel like I can‘t go wrong. 😍 Clap When You Land will be something I listen to on audio. I‘ve read all of her others that way & she‘s such an amazing reader! I‘ve also been sorely neglecting my audiobooks since I stopped commuting so frequently when the pandemic hit...but my work schedule‘s pretty normalized now at 3 days a week. I think it‘s time to begin again! And I can always listen at home, come new developments. 🙈 3y
Clare-Dragonfly I loved The Seas! In fact, I‘m pretty sure it was on my very first #newyearwhodis list. 3y
monalyisha @Clare-Dragonfly 😮 It all comes back to #NewYearWhoDis. 😅 3y

This book only has three reviews here (& all only so-so), so I guess I get to be the first to give it a pick! This is a heartbreaking story about a family who at their core love each other, but constantly drive each other away due to their own issues. But seeing the story play out was such a ride! I also really enjoyed the short chapter format so you were never too far from continuing on another character‘s journey. Ugh. So good. 💕 #bookspinbingo

erinreads And with that, my #DoubleSpin book is complete! Now time to make some bingos happen. 😂 3y

Got absolutely no reading in today because work consumed me like 10 minutes after I woke up today (the joys of working from home!) and now Korsnacki is distracting me. DAMMIT STEVE, JUST CALL ARIZONA ALREADY.

And that‘s bingo #5! 🎉

Adding an audiobook edition to #bookspinbingo really helped push my listening to new heights. I usually listen to a lot of audio, but playing on the bingo board was an encouragement. But I am now abandoning it, as my hold on the latest Ruth Ware came in and I‘m out of free spaces. 😆

ChaoticMissAdventures Wow! Way to go. I gone none this month 😂 my reading is all over the place. This is such an accomplishment! 3y

I‘m not really sure what to say about this one. It‘s the story of a fractured family who at once cling to one another and push each other away. It has the potential to be an affecting exploration of these characters, but it actually just comes off a little cold. And there‘s some weird stuff here that doesn‘t fit—a random ghost and odd attempts at comedy. I‘m bewildered by its presence on the NBA longlist.

ChaoticMissAdventures Good to know I have it on hold at the library. Glad I didn't just randomly buy it! 3y
Hooked_on_books @ChaoticMissAdventures I‘ll be interested to know what you think of it. Hopefully you fare better than I did! 3y

My husband‘s birthday gift to me yesterday was four simple words: “Let‘s go buy books.” He also bought me a new bookcase as well, so A+ guy right there, 1/1 would marry again. 😂 The Dodie Smith I found at a used bookstore and the other three are all 2020 releases that I‘ve been looking forward to.

Some scenes btw family members in this book were so touching and beautiful. But there were some experimental choices the author made that flat out didn't work for me-- the inclusion of Raleigh and Lejeune. Cheyenne frustrated me for too much of the book. A lot could've been cut and replaced with other missing elements, some threads were started and left hanging. I personally wouldn't recommend this book, it seems like it has a very niche market.

I enjoyed this beautifully written book. But, ultimately it was just a bit too long and drawn out to be a full on pick for me. #Edelweiss #ARC
